SJSOA Yellow Cards to Coaches
2
The South Jersey Soccer Officials Association and the League of Leagues are working together to better the athletic experience for all involved. This tracking pilot program aims to change the culture of inappropriate, irresponsible, and unprofessional behavior by coaches. It aims to enforce accountability. Creating a better environment will hopefully lessen referee abuse, leading to better referee retention rates, less game cancellations, and an overall better environment for the student athletes.

From the NFHS Rule Book, Coaches Code of Ethics: "Coaches shall respect and support contest officials. Coaches shall not indulge in conduct which would incite players or spectators against the officials. Public criticism of officials or players is unethical."

Dissent: objecting by word of mouth or action to any decision given by an official
Beginning at about the 10 minute mark of the first half, the Eastern head coach began verbally objecting and complaining about every call or non call that did not go his way.
With under a minute to go, the student timekeeper stopped the on field clock for a throw in. By the time I realized that this had happened, play had resumed. At this point there was about 10 seconds left in the half and and the difference between my watch and the on the field clock was about two seconds.
Rather then stop the game I chose to continue play and I blew my whistle to end the half when my watch read 00:00 and the scoreboard clock read 00:02.
The head coach protested this very loudly and wasn't satisfied with my explanation, continuing his verbal protest even after he received an explanation as to what had occurred.
I then showed him a yellow card and cautioned him for the accumulated dissent of the first half.

Coach Moore came onto pitch while the ball was still in play to argue that I should’ve awarded them a goal after his player took a shot that hit the cross bar and bounced down into Delran keepers hands. I was on the 18 and he was on other side of mid field. After being asked to leave field of play he continued to argue loudly on the pitch. I had to stop play and showed him the yellow for being on the field .I went over to explain to head coach that ball never crossed the goal line and coach Moore continued argue and yell over me. I told him to stop so I can explain to head coach he wouldn’t so I gave him second yellow for dissent then showed him red.

In the first half I asked a Williamstown player if he had shin pads on and he showed them to me. They were cut in half. Showed Coach Geyer 1st yc for illegal equipment. After Wash.Twp scored on a pk to end game, coach Geyer stood in the middle of his players sarcastically clapping at me and my partner, at the same time repeatedly saying to his players "the right team won". Many of his players were out of control and I asked him to take care of them, instead he continued clapping and saying "the right team won" then added "they made sure of it". This further incited the Williamstown players, to the point where my partner red card one for abusive language to an official and 2 Washington Twp police officers came over to scorers table. Coach Geyer was then shown second yc and then rc.
