7/7/2026 14:13:35Metabolism models across lake gradientsUsing dissolved oxygen (DO) data, the Inverse Modeling Approach (IMA) estimates metabolism through production and respiration parameters. Since diel DO equations vary by organism-level factors and lakes present distinct environmental conditions, we hypothesize that different models suit different lake types. This project aims to test multiple equations to estimate GPP, R, and atmospheric flux across diverse lake gradients, including latitude, trophic status, and water clarity.Green (established and open to new collaborators)

8/11/2026 22:17:32Planktothrix ProjectLook at the temporal and spatial distribution and drivers of Planktothrix blooms. We're proposing to tackle this with 4 subprojects: literature review, data contribution/existing datasets, coordinated international proposals, and coordinated sampling. The coordinated sampling will involve a) sampling once a mixing season, b) identifying Planktothrix with a phycoerythrin (PE) sensor- DCM, sample PE peak for cyanotoxins and phytoplankton.Green (established and open to new collaborators)

9/3/2026 16:52:14Over wintering phytoplankton: fasting or feeding?Question: When do nutrients limit phytoplankton growth in winter?
Hypotheses: Under light sufficient conditions, phytoplankton will be limited by nutrients. This will depend on lake type, ice and snow cover, and trophic status.
Approach: In situ assessment of nutrient limitation at 4 time points in ice covered lakes: early ice-on, light snow, heavy snow, ice off.

9/4/2026 1:25:24Overtourism ImpactThis project aims to develop a framework for quantifying how tourism and recreation affect lake ecological status. Terrestrial systems have established carrying capacity methods, but equivalents for water bodies remain fragmented and rarely capture specific pathways through how activities alter lakes or to what extent. We plan to decompose tourism by activity type and link each to lake responses, integrating remote sensing, wastewater data, and WFD records to identify sustainable tourism levels.Green (established and open to new collaborators)

9/4/2026 9:24:50Thermal Stratification PhenologyOne of the most important factors regulating the physical and biogeochemical conditions in lakes is the phenology of thermal stratification. Using long-term data from well-studied GLEON study sites and individual lakes paired with ISIMIP 3a Local Lake Simulations, we plan to further investigate the generality of the predictions for earlier stratification onset and later breakdown as presented in Woolway et al. (2021). Green (established and open to new collaborators)

9/4/2026 9:41:46Shifting CH4:CO2 ratios in perturbed ecosystems (CCRAP)Does the CH4:CO2 ratio shift in perturbed lake ecosystems? CH4 has a much higher GWP than CO2 and its production depends on anoxic conditions. We will follow a two-step approach where we'll 1) create a conceptual framework for anaerobic vs. aerobic metabolism building on the CO2/O2 relationship established in Vachon et al. (2020) by adding a 3rd axis for CH4, and 2) analyze existing lake CH4 & CO2 concentration data and a potential relationship between the CH4:CO2 ratio & ecosystem perturbation.Green (established and open to new collaborators)

PULSE – Physiological Understanding of Lakes through Sensor-based Ecophysiology
PULSE aims to develop new indices for monitoring phytoplankton physiology using dissolved oxygen rates rather than conventional concentration-based measurements. By integrating high-frequency DO dynamics with CO₂, pH, nitrogen, phosphorus, light and temperature, we will distinguish physiological signals from environmental variability and develop a simple, standardized protocol that can be applied across GLEON lakes.Green (established and open to new collaborators)

9/8/2026 12:32:24ZigyStar and the Fauna from LakesZigy Star and the Fauna from Lakes asks a simple question: when eDNA metabarcoding detects a zooplankton taxon, is it expected, plausible, or surprising? We identified more than 9000 georeferenced sequencing runs and performed taxonomic searches on over 26 million reads. We are comparing those molecular detections with conventional occurrence records: GBIF, ZIG, LakePulse, and the US NLA to develop a plausibility score that brings sources of biodiversity evidence into a common framework.

9/8/2026 16:48:54Under-Ice PulseThis project aims to uncover the role and drivers of under-ice ecosystem metabolism in lakes worldwide. We are trying to answer questions such as the relative contribution of under-ice metabolism to whole-year lake metabolism. We also examine how changes in ice phenology affect under-ice metabolism and identify places where our models fail to predict it. Green (established and open to new collaborators)

9/9/2026 14:46:10Water Quality TriangleIt is assumed that countries with strong environmental policy, good public education and an engaged scientific community will have ecosystems of good quality. We will test this assumption, using lake water quality as an indicator. We will incorporate a variety of different data such as remote sensing data of chlorophyll-A, and different indices such as years in schooling, political corruption indices etc. We will begin by looking at the country scale, and then into regional and local examples. EcoFun: Estimating Lake Ecosystem Function(s) using in-situ and remote sensing data
We need spatially resolved lake metabolism estimates to understand ecosystem functions globally. Hyperspectral data can provide metabolism-related parameters, such as irradiance, Kd, chlorophyll-a, water transparency, CDOM and phytoplankton absorption. We aim to assess whether optical data can explain variations in primary production, photosynthetic activity and ecosystem metabolism by combining hyperspectral and in situ measurements and linking them to the GLAMR Project.Green (established and open to new collaborators)

2/19/2026 11:26:35Lake Climate AmplifiersLakes are increasingly viewed as potential amplifiers of climate change through greenhouse gas emissions, carbon cycling, and energy balance shifts. Yet the magnitude and persistence of these feedbacks remain uncertain. This project evaluates when lakes truly amplify warming by identifying key constraints—biogeochemical, physical, spatial, and temporal—that limit positive feedbacks, providing a clearer basis for integrating lakes into Earth system projections.Yellow (progressed but may be open to new collaborators in some contexts)

6/24/2026 19:20:36Mind the GAP (MtG)Global climate models frequently underrepresent inland waters in the Global South due to historical data scarcity. MtG is an international initiative focused on improving the representation of Latin American and African lakes in global climate change assessments. 9/3/2026 10:25:30Subseasonal Forecast in LakesWe are developing a reproducible workflow to assess and apply weekly forecasting (1-6 weeks in the future) in lake volume, temperature and thermocline depth. The workflow can be applied in reservoirs and natural lakes. The purpose is to decide whether the subseasonal prediction can be used for water management decisions and what would be its limitations. It would be great if you have 2-3 years of profile temperature data and a running GLM for your lake, but it’s open to anyone interested.Yellow (progressed but may be open to new collaborators in some contexts)

9/6/2026 16:31:51Resilient LakesThis project is evaluating if and how the dominant color wavelength of lakes around the world changes (or maintains) as lakes experience changes in local land use. We are using published remote sensing datasets of lake color, land use classifications from NOAA, and lake basin / watershed characteristics from HydroLakes to evaluate changes in ~ 67,000 lakes from 1985-2016. We are especially interested to understand what conditions make lakes more color-resilient when experiencing land use change.Yellow (progressed but may be open to new collaborators in some contexts)

Microscopic Pandemic: semi-automated tracking of global host-parasite dynamics
Chytrid fungal parasite infections are a major driver of phytoplankton population dynamics, influencing carbon cycling in aquatic ecosystems. Host-parasite interactions remain poorly quantified at a global scale and sufficient frequency. We will implement a semi-automated workflow using FlowCam and machine-learning to classify phytoplankton taxa and their infection status, quantify host-parasite dynamics across lakes and identify the drivers and consequences of parasitic infection.Yellow (progressed but may be open to new collaborators in some contexts)

9/14/2026 17:45:04M&M's (Mixing and Methane Synthesis)There is mounting evidence that mixing frequency may shape the variability in CH4 emissions observed within small lakes and ponds though this relationship is not well understood. The goal of this project is to synthesize existing mixing and methane data from small lakes and ponds to explore how mixing frequency shapes patterns in CH4 concentrations, emissions, and, if data availability allows, oxidation.

6/25/2026 14:12:06Long-term dissolved oxygen trendsThis project sought to understand whether and how dissolved oxygen in lakes was responding to long-term surface temperature increases. Because solubility decreases with temperature, we anticipated that we would observe decreasing dissolved oxygen concentrations with rising temperature over time. In order to test this, we solicited long-term (at least 15 years) monitoring records of dissolved oxygen and temperature profiles, and ancillary data where available, from widely distributed lakes.Black (completed)

7/7/2026 14:05:45Light dependency of lake primary productionThis project investigates daytime light dependency of net ecosystem production (NEP), evaluating metrics like light efficiency (α), NEPmax, Ic, and saturation (Ik) against available light in lakes. It tests hypotheses on light limitation (spring/fall), nutrient dominance (summer/tropics), and macrophyte saturation in shallow waters. It also explores how chemical, meteorological, and lake meta-parameters (depth, area, latitude) influence these light-response metrics.Black (completed)
