24
This is an example document, based on my tracking of campaigns for the blogzine chasingthestorm.com
25
You can export this sheet in xls or csv and work on it. File>export
26
Fill in data within the 6 fields- URL, Source, Medium, Term, Content and Campaign- as per explanation below
27
Source:
28
In this example, the "source" is some online publications that I write for (Thinkingaloud.in, community20.blogspot.com, and my Google Knol).
Source refers to the referrer and hence can be name of the site or even "email" in case you are interested in tracking the clicks from within an email campaign or newsletter
29
Medium:
30
"Medium" usually should be something like "CPC". Refers to a qualifier within source. If source is Ad words, Medium can be CPC.
I used an identifier to the textlinks by naming the textlinks accrording to the subject.
In this example, source is the name of the publication and the medium is the subject of the textlink within my article linking back to the original post on chasingthestorm.com
31
Term:
32
In my article, I had placed three links- one linking to a post on "Americanization of Internet" another one leading to an article on "twitter in Asia" and the last one for homepage "chasingthestorm"
33
I identified each link under the 'term' column- hence the three terms repeat for the three publications
34
In case you want to use this spreadsheet for managing your adwords campaign, the term will refer to the keyword or phrase that a user types into the search engine
35
Content:
36
This field is very handy when you use more than one banner at the same position
37
You can differentiate between both the banners by using variations in the content column. So if you have two banners running with the theme 'joy' and the other with the theme 'security', you can analyze by your search results which one is delivering better efficiencies. I have just used 'textlink'- because the medium helps me identify the different type of textlinks.
38
Campaign:
39
The campaign name. In this example, I was "Guest Blogging". Hence the name. I could have named it "adwords_Dec2008" to specify my adwords campaign in December 2008, or something similar
40
41
After you have finished inputting the data in the cells, please copy the URL generated and paste in a browser. If it leads to the desired page- Bingo! you got it right- and are now ready to track your campaigns. If not, check your inputs/entries carefully- did you miss something in the URL column? or did you fill in all fields- if not put a dash (-) in that cell
42
You can use tinyURL or SnipURL for shortening the URL
