10/28/2014 15:06:38Hillary, Judy, AmandaBlack, HollyThe Field GuideShort StoryJared, Simon, Mallory, and Brownie the Fairy. After Jared, Simon, and Mallory's parents divorced, they moved to Maine with their mother. While in Maine, they discover a secret library. The library is connected to the their new home in the hall closet. The children then meet Brownie, a fairy who has lived in the house for several years. After meeting Brownie, the children come across a book called Arthur "Spiderwick's Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You." Brownie warns them that the book is not to be held in the hands of mortals. The library is a symbol of knowledge; the "Field Guide" is a symbol of a secret world. Simon is "The Innocent," Jared is "The Warrior," and Mallory is "The Caregiver."Themes would be fantasy, or a quest for discovery. After discovering "Field Guide," the children grow curious of what is within the book. Cornelia Funke's book, "Inkheart," can be compared to "The Field Guide." Both stories revolve around a dangerous book. The fictional book of "Inkheart" within Funke's storybook is a threat to the main characters of Maggie and Mortimer, just as how the fictional book of "Field Guide" in Black's "The Field Guide" is said to be dangerous to the Grace children by Brownie.
