YulyCould you elaborate a little about the kind of feedback ITAs receive in the app?

BryanVery nicely done! This is a potentially very useful tool for ITAs! I am sure some of us would like to help you pilot it (ASU). Can individuals keep track of their gains in terms of intelligibility? Also, do you find that ITAs of different L1s experience different challenges. I would guess yes. If so, how does the MAPT adjust for these differences?

Kevin HirschiHi Yuly! The ITAs receive instant feedback from the ASR-equipped component of the program. We set up phones that are correct and incorrect when designing each speaking task. Then, if an incorrect phone is detected, the app shows the word in red and a pop-up message gives more information. The Novo platform has built-in phone samples for listeners to listen to and they can even tap on the word and compare what they said. It's pretty cool!

Kevin HirschiHi Bryan! Thank you so much! We would definitely be interested in piloting this at ASU. I'll email you separately. As for your other questions, the learner can't see their overall score with our current settings. And, as the ASR is not perfect, the relationship between their practice and gains in intelligibility is another story altogether. So, more work to be done here. As for different L1s, I haven't seen a noticeable trend in the L1s we've worked with. However, I'm sure the lesson content would drive some differences based on which features were targeted. For example, the /l-r/ distinction might be very difficult for some learners whereas the /i-ɪ/ difference would be difficult for others. The ASR itself, as far as I know, does not train to the speaker, so there wouldn't be an adaptation period. It's not perfect but so far we've found about 80% of ratings to be accurate. There's a lot more work to do in this area!
