4 | 1955 | 1955 | North Pacific (NORPAC) Project | The August 1955 cruise was part of the NORPAC Project, the the largest oceanographic program ever conducted at the time. The project was made up of participants from Japan, Canada, and the United States. The fleet consisted of 19 ships (11 from Japan, 1 from Canada, and 7 from the US) and approximately 55,000 miles were sailed - one Sixteenth of the surface of the globe was covered in this cruise! The NORPAC project achieved the collection of a rapid and intense survey over a short period of time. 5 | 1957 | 1958 | A year of a changing Pacific Ocean | Dramatic changes took place in the Pacific oean from 1957- 1958. Across the Eastern Northern Pacific, water temperatures rose as much as 3 degrees celsius higher than average temperatures. This year was later revealed to be one of the strongest El Niño events on record. 7 | 2004 | 2004 | CalCOFI adds 9 nearshore stations to the standard 66 station pattern | In July of 2004, nine 20 meter nearshore stations originally supported by SCCOOS (Southern California Coastal Ocean Observation System) were added to the standard 66 CalCOFI stations to enhance observations in the coastal, state waters. The crew boarded R/V Sally Ride, a vessel named after the first woman to ever go to Space.
