This class was complex, the subjects were advanced and the pace moved fast, but it was extremely interesting !
This class was very interesting, and I enjoyed putting effort into asking questions and participating in class.
The teacher’s responses to assignments, exams, and other works is very quick. He is always willing to help. The standard is set high, but it is gratifying to do well in this class because of that.
The teacher was great ! He knows exactly what specific details need to be emphasised, and explains everything perfectly. He is always available and willing to help.
5Complex class, but interesting. Important work that builds for the future of that concentration. 55He is a great teacher, interesting and interested, wants to help, and will rethink of ways to explain something.

The Professor encouraged questions and seemed to enjoy it when students were truly engaged in class. He was very helpful in labs and would help us if we were confused.
I attended every class, and Jay Tan did a great job of teaching difficult content but also keeping a light, fun vibe in the classroom.
The instructor did not grade things very fast, and it was hard to get feedback on assignments. On the assignments we did get feedback for, he had useful and constructive comments.
At the beginning of the semester, Professor Tan would answer questions, but sometimes the answers were very complex. As the semester went on, he became one of the best professors I've had at answering questions and made things very clear for me when I asked questions.
5
The course was of high quality. Learning the why behind what we do in labs in class and then actually applying it in the lab was a nice setup and helped me actually remember the material.
55
I believe the instructor did a great job with this course. I have a great understanding of how econometrics works and what we should be doing when working with data now.

I think the learning environment was great for this course. During the lectures, Professor Tan would always stop to answer questions if anyone had any, and make any clarifications on those topics that may not have been the easiest to understand. I loved the lab time as well. This extra time outside of class dedicated to learning the statistical coding language made such a substantial impact on the way I was able to learn it can not be understated. As the lectures would cover more of the theoretical concepts of Econometrics, the lab provided time for me to go and test these concepts for myself without any of the messy math or confusing variables. This time was also great as Professor Tan and our TA would walk through functions of Stata and then walk around to answer questions or resolve any issues that students had with the software. Perhaps most importantly to the learning environment was Professor Tan’s commitment to evolving it and optimizing it for the needs of his students. Twice throughout the semester, Professor Tan sent out surveys to learn more about the ways that we were learning and what we thought about the course. This is not to mention the regular check-ins that he would make, asking if we preferred to learn about new concepts in math or in graphs. Professor Tan was great at adapting to the needs of the students. I truly do not think I have ever seen a teacher adapt their learning style so fluidly and regularly to meet the needs of those in the class. It was truly professional and so outgoing, and I am massively thankful for the effort that Professor Tan put into making the course as understandable as he did.
I would describe my effort and engagement in this course as excellent, and on the higher end of how much I have engaged with a class at Hamilton. The content in metrics is definitely not easy, and having taken a year off from math classes, metrics demanded the most out of me. During class time, I was always engaged, taking great notes, and outside of class, I went to office hours, reviewed material on a regular basis, and took my time and attention into every problem set we did. I think this class was super awesome at keeping me engaged and committed to the content.
Professor Tan gave great feedback and set very clear expectations for the course. However, what sets him apart from most feedback from other instructors is that he would show you exactly how to meet these standards. Maybe this comes to mind as it is the most recent instance, but our end-of-semester term paper culminated with a presentation before the due date of the paper. After each group had presented their presentation Professor Tan sent my partner and I a 500 word feedback email that entailed exactly how he would like us to improve our project in the paper, outlining how we would be able to succeed in the context of exploration and the rubric, which I thought was awesome and really showed the extent to which he put in effort to watch his students succeed.
Professor Tan always had great interactions with students, answering their questions in ways that made sense to them, and always allowing time for every student to be on the same page with the content. Outside of class, he was awesome to visit in office hours, repeating content that he may have already covered with no problem, showing full effort make sure everyone was understanding the difficult concepts of the course.
5
I think Econometrics, as it is taught at Hamilton, is a very high-quality course. It is challenging, and for me was very rewarding for those who put in the effort to engage with the material. I think Professor Tan’s commitment to leaving no student behind really aided this and even improved my confidence in my own ability. Even when the course was challenging with complex concepts, Professor Tan guided his students through the ways of thinking about the concept in engaging ways and great detail, which made the already difficult content feel so rewarding to conceptualize.
55
I don’t think that any instructor would’ve been better prepared and equipped to teach this course. Professor Tan’s knowledge of Economics and Math, his patience and ability to understand exactly what is causing your own misunderstanding, and the extreme lengths to ensure everyone was getting through the content behind, was truly extraordinary and nothing I have seen out of any other Professor. I seriously, seriously, cannot understate the level of appreciation I have for those qualities of Professor Tan I mentioned above, as I think these made him one of the best teachers I have had, especially when it comes to course understanding. I would like to thank Professor Tan and express my gratitude and admiration for the effort that he put into the learning of every one of his students; it was truly extraordinary to watch his first priority be the student every time.

The learning environment was very engaging and supportive. Even though the material can be difficult and technical, Jay made the classroom feel approachable and enjoyable. His explanations were clear and he used humor to keep the atmosphere positive, which helped me stay motivated. At the same time, the workload—especially weeks with a quiz, lab report, and problem set—was intense, but still in line with expectations for a course like this. Overall, the structure of the course helped me significantly improve my understanding of econometrics.
I put steady effort into the course throughout the semester. I attended class regularly, participated when I could, and completed all problem sets, quizzes, and lab reports on time. Because I had some prior interest in econometrics, I tried to stay engaged with both the theory and the applied work. Some weeks had heavier workloads, but I worked consistently to keep up.
The feedback on assignments and exams was clear and useful for understanding mistakes. His evaluations were fair and reflected high standards. While the workload could be heavy, the responses to our work showed that he cared about our progress and wanted us to develop strong econometric reasoning.
Jay was extremely friendly, approachable, and understanding. He communicated clearly in class and responded well to questions, creating a space where students felt comfortable asking for clarification. He was patient and supportive, and his positive attitude made interactions enjoyable. He was always willing to help when students were confused.
5
The course was high quality and very well taught. Although the workload was heavy at points, the assignments and labs helped reinforce the material, and I walked away with a much stronger understanding of econometric methods. The combination of clear teaching and a challenging curriculum made the course valuable.
55
Overall, Jay was a very effective instructor. Despite being early in his teaching career, he explained complex material clearly, created a welcoming environment, and made the class genuinely enjoyable. His friendliness and humor helped reduce the stress of a challenging subject, and he was consistently supportive and understanding toward students. I appreciated his dedication and the clarity he brought to econometrics.

This course was very challenging and thought-provoking. That being said, I thought the instructor did an amazing job explaining what we were learning and was open to any and all questions and treated every question the same no matter how basic or complex which was really nice. I learned a lot throughout this course and definitely did not think it would go as well as it did, but I felt the instructor helped as much as he could to get us to succeed in this class.
I felt like I really tried hard in this course and did as best as I could have. I attended every class that I could and put in many hours doing the assignments outside of class so that I did them to the best of my ability.
I thought that he was a little slow in grading our assignments but also provided good feedback when we did get those assignments back so you could tell he was taking his time. The standards of work were set very high but I felt he did his best to help push us in the right direction in order to succeed.
Instructor was very clear with his directions on assignments and was open to any and all questions that came his way. He was always available during his office hours and was open to scheduling appointments outside of those hours if you were not available then.
5
This course was very challenging and probably the hardest course I have taken at Hamilton. Its very fast paced and very complicated coursework.

I thought this professor was very effective and taught as slow or fast as the class needed. He took time to receive feedback from the students mid semester and went over that feedback with the whole class to make sure he could teach as well as he could. In my opinion, he is a great professor and very smart.

This class was very thought-provoking, the professor was really helpful outside of class, but went through the content pretty fast, and hard to keep up, as do all the professors in the Econ department.
Could not miss class or would fall significantly behind. Would participate in class because the professor was not judgmental towards questions. Tough class, a lot of time-consuming homework, projects, labs, and exams.
I think he set pretty fair standards in the exams and pretty high standards for work.
The professor was great in terms of being willing to re-explain things to you in office hours and willing to schedule time outside of office hours. He was really understanding in terms of accommodations for his heavy assignments.
5I think it is a very important course to take. 45

Showed up every class. Attended a couple of office hours. Very interested in the subject. Worked hard outside of classs.
Very helpful and honest responses that made it very easy to improve. Was a bit slow to respond, but could be attributed to lack of graders helping him grade labs (only worked on problem sets).

The learning environment in this course was one of the most engaging and supportive I’ve experienced. The instructor consistently made the material thought-provoking by connecting concepts to real-world examples and encouraging us to think critically rather than just memorize information. They created a classroom atmosphere where questions were always welcomed, and I never felt hesitant to ask for clarification or offer a comment.
I never missed a class, and I felt like I was always giving a solid effort throughout. the teacher made it easy and encouraging to be engaged
The instructor consistently provided feedback that was both timely and highly useful. Whether it was on problem sets, exams, or coding-based assignments, their comments clearly identified what I did well and where my reasoning or methodology needed improvement. The feedback never felt superficial; it always helped me understand the underlying econometric concepts more deeply and correct mistakes in a meaningful way.
Their availability outside of class was also exceptional. Office hours were genuinely helpful, and the instructor created an environment where students felt comfortable seeking guidance, whether it was about problem sets, coding issues, or broader intuition behind the models. Overall, the instructor fostered a learning atmosphere where students felt supported and respected, and their clarity and approachability made the course far more manageable and rewarding.

Course was though provoking, a lot more toward en of semester, beginning felt like it was just memorizing math. I also don't like math that much so I might be biased. The professor did a great job encouraging learning and pushing us even when we struggled. As well Professor did a great job adjusting teaching styles halfway through the year and incorporating more practice problems in class.
I attended class every day but I did not participate much in class. I was very involved in coursework outside of class and was not very well prepared for the course. The math review at beginning did not feel like review, struggled to grasp concepts at first because lack of math knowledge.
Timeliness of response was a little long, granted there are lots of students in the class and he provides very thorough responses. I would rather have thorough responses than a quick turnout. Midterms were graded pretty fast too.
Very clear outline of what was expected for each assignment. Professor Tan was extremely flexible for meeting with us outside of class, one of his office hours time was during another class of mine and he was extremely accommodating and helpful. I often went to his office even when he didn't have office hours and he would be there and would help answer question. No other professor I have had has been as available as Professor Tan

I think the first part of semester was a little weak, there want much explaining, it was just content being thrown at us, however as we progressed it got so much better.

This course was very thought-provoking, and the professor was extremely supportive of students and the many different skill sets of class members. Not only do I feel that my skills developed significantly over the course of the semester, but I also always felt comfortable voicing my confusion and asking clarifying questions.
I was very interested in this course, and I spent a great deal of time outside of lecture and lab time working on labs and assignments. I attended every class session, taking notes and participating when appropriate. I definitely had a lot of prior interest in the course as an economics major, but I thoroughly enjoyed the content and real-world applications we were presented with.
The professor provided strong feedback on all assignments, from labs to exams. He not only graded assignments carefully, allowing room for partial credit where it was due, but he also provided written feedback and explained why points may have been taken off. He was always willing to meet with students about their assignments, and would offer thorough feedback when students required further clarification. He set high standards, but also rewarded hard work and encouraged growth.
The instructor went above and beyond to make himself accessible to students. Not only did he offer an abundance of office hours on a weekly basis, but he also added additional hours before all exams, and was willing to meet with students one-on-one if needed. He paused frequently during lectures to make sure all students were following along, and he would explain in detail if students had questions. He was very clear about expectations, and posted assignments and announcements on blackboard in a timely manner.
5
This was a wonderful course. Not only do I feel that I learned a lot over the course of the semester, but I also feel confident that I truly learned and digested the content, and will be able to go on to use these topics both in thesis and potentially in my career. The assignments, labs, and exams all included real world applications that also challenged understanding of the content, and the instructor was wonderful.

This professor was one of the best professors I've had during my time at Hamilton. Not only was he a new professor in charge of a class of 40 students, but he went above and beyond at making sure students had the support they needed. He made the content engaging, and while the course got overwhelming at times, he listened to the needs of students and would do everything he could to make sure students were learning in an environment that challenged them while encouraging them. He was always available to meet with students, and returned all assignments in a timely manner with strong feedback. He never cancelled a class, and made sure we spent every minute learning whatever we could. He was extremely attentive to questions, and fostered a class environment that made all students, regardless of ability, excited to learn. I truly could not say enough good things about this professor.

Lectures were relatively straightforward and prepared us well for problem sets. Due to the nature of the class assignments and labs, the material had to be approached from a creative standpoint. Professor was more than willing to help outside of class.
This course requires lots of time outside of lecture hours to complete the material. I worked closely with my lab group to complete labs and problem sets. Since we had a class note taker, I felt more comfortable missing classes. I didn't participate much outside of being cold-called since the material is difficult.
Assignments took a while to grade, but I understand that is because of the nature of the assignments themselves. Standards were clearly set, for the most part, but a bit more clarity on how labs would be graded would have been helpful. Adding more feedback comments would have been helpful as well.
Professor clearly communicated material, answered questions clearly, and set up individual appointments with students when they were having difficulties.
5
The course covered a lot of material, but I found that the labs were most helpful in terms of economics. Applying what we learned in class to the labs helped me make sense of the complicated things we were learning in class. More time dedicated to the application of material would make the course better.
44
Professor very clearly shows dedication and a desire to see his students succeed. He was more than willing to dedicate his personal time outside of class to answer questions and provide advice. He created an environment of positivity and was an amazing instructor. More feedback and transparency on grading would have made the class better.

The instructor's comments were always thorough and gave me great feedback, albeit sometimes later than the next assignment for that particular section of the class which made week to week adjustments difficult during the course.
Great interactions, kept it professional and helpful all the time.5I thought the quality of the course was very challenging and engaging55I thought the instructor was very effective in explaining his reasoning555

The learning environment of this course was overall great! The instructor furthered the learning environment through thought provoking assignments and lectures and creative work
My effort and engagement in this course was very high. I completed every assignment that was given with the utmost diligence and enjoyed it. I only missed class when I was ill. I attended QSR and TA help appointments every week to ensure that I was staying up to date with the curriculum.
The instructors' assignments and exams were overall effective and enjoyable. I believe that they furthered my understanding of the class. The instructor was always very efficient in all forms of communicating.
The instructor always answers students sufficiently and to the best of their ability, even when the student asks a rather daft question. The Instructor was always available during office hours to help with any questions I had.

The course was high quality, a standard econometrics course to what I could tell, but it was made interesting by the professor.

Overall the instructor was effective. They taught us well in class and with enthusiasm and tested us fairly. I would happily take a course with them again. Professor Tan is a really gifted professor. He is very kind and puts himself in our shoes often which makes his course not only enjoyable, but manageable. He is extremely fair, which is very nice to see in a professor. While he is a young professor he is very good and I believe he has a very bright future at hamilton.

Very welcoming learning environment. The instructor taught effectively and increased my understanding of the subject matter. I felt comfortable asking questions and making comments in class due to the welcoming learning environment.
I gave full effort and engagement in this course; showed up to every class and participated to the best of my ability. I was very interested in the subject and felt like it paid off when it came to class engagement.
The instructor was very timely when it came to feedback and set a high standard of work.
The instructor was always very respectful towards students and was always available during office hours.
5High quality course. Invited me to think critically every class and required me to be engaged during lectures.559.5/10. The instructor was great. Sometimes the lectures would get confusing but I believe that is due to the dense subject matter.555

The Professor was fantastic for the course. Very fair tests, lectures were very clear, and I especially enjoyed all of the resources provided outside of class, whether it was study materials or office hours help.
I attended all lectures, office hours, and completed all homework. I also studied a lot for tests and dedicated much of my work time to this class. Before, I wasn't too interested in the topic but as I learned more I thought it added a lot of substance to my economics education and am happy to have taken it.
He is very thorough on exam feedback, and grading is fair. I think he prepared us perfectly for all of the exams and it is possible to do very well in the class with hard work.
You can tell he really cared about the students' success because he always went above and beyond to make us feel welcomed and to answer our questions so we understand what we asked and so much more.
5
I think it was extremely high quality because of all the resources, the quality of the professor, and the amount that I feel comfortable after having completed the class.
55
I think he was a great professor and I know he was really effective because of how much more I know about econometrics after nearly being done with the class.

The lecture felt a little all over the place, in that the way the content was taught was not very memorable. It got better towards the end of the semester, but during the first half, it was unclear as to what exactly I was learning and why. The application and instruction regarding the discussion questions were helpful in applying the content that was being taught.
Frequently attended class and attended weekly facilitated group sessions at the QSR.
Took the instructor quite a while to grade labs and problem sets - this didn't necessarily cause an issue since the assignments were spread out, and we usually received past grades before the next assignment was due.
Very friendly instructor who encouraged and welcomed questions and was willing to answer just about any questions in class if there was no time crunch. Very willing to help students and engage in conversations with them, and learn more about them outside of the classroom.
4
In terms of content, the problem sets were helpful to gain a stronger understanding of the course content, and the labs were helpful to apply the content taught in class. Workload-wise, it was challenging but reasonable and helped in applying the course content

The instructor developed an environment that encouraged learning and welcomed questions; however, when it came to teaching the content of the class, it was quite unclear as to what was being taught, and even the problem sets were confusing to complete when trying to apply what was taught. The teaching got better during the second half of the semester, and the content was clearer, but for the first half of the semester, I didn't really understand what I was meant to be learning.

The learning environment was a bit dull in lecture; however, the labs were very engaging and enjoyable. I don't think, unfortunately, that there was an effective way to genuinely make the lectures fun, as they're just pure theory. We were able to ask questions often, and the instructor was able to give the lectures without looking at notes (except for example problems of course).
This course was very interesting given my interest in Economics, and I attended every lecture and lab, and participated. I also was involved outside of class as I took Statistics II this semester and also met up with my lab group to do problem sets and other things as well.
The instructor did grade quite slow, however it's understandable because he dealt with two econometrics sections and one microeconomics section. The feedback was always good though (on the work that HE GRADED of course, I'm not talking about stuff graded by the student graders). He set a high standard of work but didn't grade overly harsh, but he did seem to pick up the grading difficulty as the semester went on.
The instructor was always willing to help and answer questions, and had ample office hours, something that I took advantage of a few times during the semester. He was also very active and always going around the room during lab period.

This course is by far the best economics course I have taken at Hamilton. It's the most engaging, not too confusing, but challenging.

Quality: 10/10
Difficulty: 6/10

Professor Tan was very effective for this course, namely because he could get up to the whiteboard and give the lecture with just a marker and an eraser. In other words, he wasn't staring at his notes the whole time, he actually knew what he was talking about.

I found this course to be very thought-provoking and engaging, and I felt that the amount of work assigned both in class and out of class to be appropriate. Class lectures would be a mix of lecture and practice problems, which I thought was helpful as I was able to learn material and then practice it in a problem. My understanding of the subject greatly increased.
I was fully engaged in this course and always attended and participated in lectures/lab. I am not an econ major, however found the class to be very engaging and interesting.
Feedback on assignments and exams was always timely and useful, and I was able to use this feedback for later assignments. Standards were always high, and evaluation of my work was always fair and helpful.
Professor Tan was clear with assignments and due dates, and was always responsive to questions or comments. He was also available for office hours.
5
The quality of the course was high, and it was challenging which required me to think critically and better understand the material. Standards were also high, but enough feedback was provided so that I was able to learn and improve my assignments as the course went on.

Professor Tan was effective in helping me learn the material, and provided enough practice problems so that I was able to better understand lectures.
