3/10/2020 17:31:41Earth Science (General), Geology, Mining; exploration; mineral processing9-12, Undergraduate - Lower Division (Freshman/Sophomore)Technology metals for a green future Futurelearn MOOChttps://www.futurelearn.com/courses/technology-metals-for-a-green-futureThis free course covers the importance of technology metals (critical raw materials) for low carbon technologies and high tech communications, the geology of where mineral ores are found, mineral exploration, mining practices, mineral processing and links to manufacturing. Responsible sourcing (environmental and social responsibility) and circular economies are also considered throughout the course. It is designed as an introductory course but no geology perquisites are needed. Learners increase their knowledge about the raw materials that make up technologies they use every day and those needed in the future, where they come from and the challenges the demand for these materials create for our world. This course will run several times per year. It is intended to take a total of 16 hours, 4 hours each week for four weeks. The material is made up on reading material, videos, exercises and research tasks, as well as the opportunity for discussion with fellow learners. Course runs in 2020 are scheduled for May, August and December.

The "Big 3" science classes—biology, chemistry, and physics—all have something interesting to offer, but they never pull it all together into a picture as big as our planet. Earth and Environmental science classes are about the real world. The activities in these modules will prepare you to understand data about Earth that will help you make informed decisions about the only home planet you'll ever have.

Each lab uses freely available software from dGB Earth Sciences, OpendTect. The seismic volume is the F3 Block in the North Sea, which is publicly available via dGB's Seismic Repository. The software is very user-friendly. The exercises are written so that no experience is needed using the software prior to the labs. Students are guided through the program as they answer questions on sedimentology, stratigraphy, geomorphology, structural geology and petroleum geology.Macdonald, H.
