Darin Layneguitar (acoustic), guitar (electric), bass, songwriting, sight readingall agesSkype, Zoom, FaceTime, Google Duo, Facebook Messenger VideoWorking musician, Experienced music teacherDarin Layne is an Austin, TX-based guitarist and composer known for his high-level playing, composing and recording abilities.

Stringology (2017) is Darin’s latest album. The11-track album is made up entirely of live takes, and shows off his formidable abilities on the 7-string guitar. Stringology, in addition to Darin’s prior albums, including Poison Flower (2015) and Left of Sunday Afternoon (2009) and ongoing performances, have made him an Austin favorite and won him international attention. A stellar sideman and producer, Darin has had the opportunity to work with some of the biggest talents and names in the music industry.

Darin was born in Buffalo, NY, on March 5, 1972. His family moved to the New England area shortly thereafter. Before he turned five years old, he was playing the family piano, and considered by all who saw him to be a prodigy. But he didn’t stop at the piano. Still a child, he turned to the cello, and began playing it at venues throughout New England. At nine years old, he shifted to the saxophone, and began playing regularly in clubs in Boston, MA. Darin’s earliest musical influences were Chopin, Monk, Stan Getz, Kiss, The Cars, and Coleman Hawkins. He studied the saxophone with fervor for three years.

Eventually, Darin became frustrated with the creative limitations of the saxophone, and turned to the guitar. The saxophone provided him with one musical line with which to work; the guitar provided six. He took to the guitar with aplomb, and by the time he was a teenager, his versatility on the instrument was evident. He studied guitar at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, TX, and later earned a degree in Jazz Guitar Performance from the University of North Texas.

Darin has completed 9 of his own albums, played as a studio musician on hundreds of other albums and performed countless shows. He has been featured in magazines such as Guitar Player and JazzTimes , and AllAboutJazz.com. As a top-call session guitarist in Austin, he has played Jazz, Country, Latin, Rock and Classical and Brazilian Choro around the world.

Darin’s music has been widely featured on film, television and radio. His music was featured most recently in the live episode of Public Radio International’s syndicated “This American Life’’ with Ira Glass, on the radio program, “Echoes,” with John Dilberto, on “Horizontes,” with Michael Crockett, and on the television series “American Made” on CNBC. Darin’s music is used in music production for numerous film projects and festivals. He is bandleader for his projects Left of Sunday Afternoon, The Darin Layne Trio, Gel, Darin Layne and David Pulkingham, and The Crying Monkeys. He has worked for and played/ recorded with Paul Barker (Ministry), Moby, Donovan, Frank Mantooth, Ray Brown, Lisa Zane, Chrysta Bell, and David Lynch. He performs locally as a solo guitarist and with David Pulkingham, The Crying Monkeys, Chris Maresh, the hip-hop band Riders Against the Storm, Jeff Lofton and many others.

In addition to maintaining a private studio, Darin teaches guitar at St. Edwards University and Austin Community College.

Nicolette Goodguitar (acoustic), keyboard, voice, songwriting, sight reading, music history / theory, Ukulele2-4, 5-7, 8-12, 13-17, all agesSkype, Zoom, FaceTime, Google Duo, Facebook Messenger VideoWorking musician, Experienced music teacher, Music gathering leader for a nonprofit music program called Home Street Music since 2018.I'm Nicolette. I earned my bachelor's in Music from Trinity University '07. Piano was my primary instrument, and I participated in choir, wind ensemble and jazz ensemble. Since 2018, I've taught students of any age, so far as old as 4 and young as 54, in-person, virtually, or socially distanced.

www.nicolettegood.com/lessons

I offer private music instruction in piano, acoustic guitar, ukulele, voice, music appreciation, and songwriting and composition.

We can use whichever technology you prefer. I also can do outdoor socially distanced lessons under my covered home-patio area. I will offer in-your-home lessons when it is safe to resume face-to-face meetings.

$35 for 30 minutes, or $50 for 45 minutes.

I work to match each student's unique personality and pace. This usually starts with a conversation starter like, "So, what music are you into?" Some students love structure, others fare best when things flow freely, and many like a mixture of both. In every approach, I incorporate ear training, a healthy amount of music theory, technique, and most importantly, steady wins along the way.

When I'm not teaching, I'm a performing songwriter working. I've gotten to share stages with artists like Mason Jennings, The Flatlanders, Caitlin Rose, Carrie Rodriguez, David Ramirez, Lincoln Durham, and Juanita Stein since 2010. I've also made a few studio albums and toured Europe: The Netherlands, France and Germany.

My other gig is with a nonprofit, Home Street Music, which uses music to empower people who've experienced homelessness. Once a week, I lead a gathering of musicians and non-musicians alike in sing-alongs, jam songs, and creative activities.
I also offer "social distancing" lessons. I meet with students in my covered home-patio area, and it's been working pretty well. nicolette.good@gmail.comTravis

AARON HAUTALAguitar (acoustic), guitar (electric), bass, keyboard, voice, freestyle, songwriting, music history / theory, specifically good at cubase/nuendo and then old school 4 track/8trackall agesSkype, Zoom, FaceTime, Google Duo, Facebook Messenger VideoWorking musician, Some music teaching experience, 25 years of being in bands/writing/arranging/performingI've played music my whole life and I'm 42. Over the years I've collaborated with upwards of 100 musicians and been in at least 10 or so serious bands as well as lots of one off little sessions. I've often been one of the "music theory" guys in whatever band or situation I've been in. Not in a stuffy stifling pushy way but you know... the guy who goes home and dissects the Beach Boys and Beatles chord progressions and all that. I've taught a few friends and bandmates almost everything they know and have a few good references but I don't have an actual teaching degree or any professional experience. I think i have a good overall understanding of music theory, song writing and the basic rock instruments. For a certain kind of student, I really think I'd be amazing but not for someone who wants to learn how to play like John Mayer or Joe Satriani or whatever. I'm more on the indie rock side of things if that helps. Moved to Austin with Daniel Johnston/Ministry/Butthole Surfers/Townes Van Zandt fantasies and could care less about Stevie Ray Vaughn and all that. I'd be real quick to give a free lesson or two to even just find out how to teach a stranger and see if it was a good fit. Just that I know I could teach a ton of stuff to just about anyone who wanted to learn. I've been a caregiver this whole time too and have a ton of patience and experience getting along with different kinds of people.ahautala6@gmail.comTravis

Johnny Dioxideguitar (acoustic), guitar (electric), bass, voice, songwritingall agesSkype, ZoomWorking musician, Experienced music teacherHailing from Austin, TX is intergalactic space cowboy Johnny Dioxide, chemical formula JO2 -- the disembodied voice of a lovelorn ghost. He refers to his music as Ghost Rock, and it has been described as intricate yet breezy, haunting yet playful, and all with a sweet western flair to leisurely mosey along to.

I have been teaching guitar and bass to people of all ages for 10+ years, I can teach from the very beginning (the foundation needed to pluck a single note, to form chords and build different rhythms) intermediate ( understanding how the chords work together, writing original chord progressions, learning riffs and licks) and all the way through to students who want to advance and specialize in improvisation through Gypsy Jazz and Texas Swing.

I play in two different projects, one being the Pendulum Hearts a Texas Swing group, frequently on-call for honky-tonks, weddings, and tribute events. And the other is my own original project called Johnny Dioxide and the Ghost Rock Radio. My song "Red Turtle" was recently featured as KUTX's "Song of the Day" on July 15th.

Most of my early performing experience was in the classical and orchestral realm as a percussionist, though I always loved playing guitar, drum kit and piano, as well as singing and writing songs . After graduate school I decided to double down on my more rocking and songwriting sides and moved to Austin.

In that time I have played in many bands in various roles, including drummer, guitarist, bass player, keys, vibes, and vocals. Some of the groups with which I've been fortunate to work are Sara Hickman, Montopolis, The Heavenly States, Zoumountchi, The Jellydots, The Higher Ups, The Lovely Sparrows, The Groundwork Music Orchestra, and many many more.

My work as a teacher in Austin began at Austin School Of Music teaching drums, guitar and rock camp from 2002-2006. I also taught lessons at Austin Waldorf School from 2002-2007, as well as beginning band at Austin Jewish Academy from 2002-2005.

Beginning in 2006, I've worked independently as a private lessons teacher, providing in home lessons to students of all ages. Since 2011 I have worked with Groundwork Music Project as a preschool music teacher. I also taught guitar, rock band and drum line classes at Austin Trinity School from 2011-2016.

Growing up in a family with myriad different cultural backgrounds, I started early with an appreciation for a broad range of ideas and perspectives. Equally early I developed an immense love for music and sound, picking up drumsticks as my main means of expression.

I worked as the Extreme Music Coordinator as well as Music Director at WBUL, at USF in Tampa, FL; Graduated with an A.S. in Recording Arts and a Masters in Entertainment Business from Full Sail in Orlando, FL.

I then spent almost 2 years teaching English in Japan, playing and recording with several bands there. After moving back to the states, I started performing with bands in my native Florida, as well as participating in various music/dance collaborations, improvisational events, and playing cover band gigs.

I've called Austin, TX my home since 2012 with my wife and son, and spend my time producing music for different visual mediums, my own projects, doing session work, and teaching. I look forward to meeting and sharing my love of music with you!

Working musician, Some music teaching experience, Experienced music teacher, Music, Movement, All subjects
My name is Helen Lee and my band name is Queen Piarei. You can hear my new album "Songs For A Young Queen" on KUTX's Spare The Rock, Spoil The Child. In January of 2018 to January 2019, I taught music and movement to children ages 0-5 at Austin's Creative Action and I taught songwriting to a 10-year-old...later I left for Maui, HI where I began to song-write, perform live with a ukulele, and also teach people of all ages how to walk (again). I also taught parents how to hold their children so that they're muscles and bones stay safe and healthy! And, of course, I taught one-on-one music there, too. Currently, I'm back in Austin, still writing/recording music.

In 2008, in India, I taught over 35 children ages 2-16 singing/performance and this summer I'll teach some of the girls again 12 years later -- except this time, it's the music I wrote!

As a music student, I started taking piano lessons at the age of 7 (44 years ago), but I really did start to learn how to sing as soon as I learned how to talk (I spoke both Korean and English as a toddler). Formal voice lessons in Chicago and New York City came to me after the age of 21. I studied clarinet for four years, bass guitar for a month, flute and saxaphone for a day, and am self-taught on the ukulele for about 5 years now.

As a performer, I've sang all over the world: Brazil, Ireland, NYC, Portland, OR, Singapore, Maui, HI, and in Austin. In 2018, I held a Saturday night one-woman residency at Wilder Wood Restaurant and at Casa De Luz Restaurant. I, in fact still perform at the latter and recently I had an album debut at Mozart's Coffee. I sing in French, Spanish, Portuguese, Hawaiian, and English...my style is jazz!

Since 1991, I've been teaching professionally so I've had lots of practice making learning fun. Good breathing and singing posture is the best foundation for any creative endeavor, as is loving good music. I don't really teach so much as I just guide the singing, ask questions, and listen.
I really love animals and children who love animals! Egg shakers are great percussion instruments for this age group.

My name is Alec Woodruff, I'm 30 years old and I've been playing the viola since I was 10 and Guitar and Bass since age 13. I have a Minor in Music from TX State with a focus on viola, and I teach at the Musician's Woodshed currently and for the past year and a half or so. I frequently gig with various projects as an electric bassist and have lots of guitar experience too. Despite Viola being my "main" bowed string instrument I'm fully able to teach violin and to a slightly lesser degree, cello as well. I also teach piano, though strings are more my background and thus have a slightly higher ceiling in skill level of students I could be able to take than piano, but I am fully capable of teaching piano fundamentals and have several long term piano students currently.
I love all kinds of music and can teach stuff from heavy metal to classical, and would love to be considered! :)
