Peer Success Coaches Santa Rosa3/7/2020How can we introduce this support to the instructors – how do I link a student to a Success Peer Coach. – maybe a link to the B-CARE services?3/21/2020We would love to continue to grow partnerships. As of right now, this is the process: https://welcome.santarosa.edu/referral
We have left this process low tech during the first year full launch so as to avoid technology being a barrier as was in the past with former early alert system However, this is a good suggestion and will be considered for our next stride.

3/7/2020The instructors are not informed of this service3/21/2020For the year this activity was evaluated, it was in a small pilot phase and the cohort consisted of College Skills students in partnership with informed College Skills faculty. When scaled up during the 19/20 year on the SR campus, faculty were informed via a PDA session, and various district wide emails and marketing materials. See emails and print materials with subject Welcome & Connect Center, or with senders; Michelle Vidaurri and Malena Hernandez. Campus wide emails asked for invitations to classroom or academic department meetings to share info to faculty and students.

4/29/2020I love that the college has added peer coaches and SEA has supported this. Its interesting to see disproportionately impacted populations over represented in this project- what a nice change :)Has the change in location (from the Equity Office to the Welcome and Connect Center) impacted students served? Are you seeing the same populations represented?I think it would be valuable to explore pairing coaches with specific programs or curricular areas (library, STEM, DSPS, learning communities, etc)The Student Success Coaches for continuing students (second year and beyond ) still reside in the Equity Office where the cohorts are designed based upon students who are disproportionately impacted. The Welcome & Connect Center serves all first year student with no exclusions, however in all that we do we are utilizing equity focused practices proven effective through research and campus partnerships. We hope to have preserved the success of the reaches seen in the earlies year within the Equity OFfice through this design and partnerships wiht learning communities which serve first year students as well.

5/1/2020I like this idea in theory, students giving support and info to other students. But I am concerned about lack of training. I had 2 coaches come to two of my classes, and the overwhelming message was "apply for financial aid", which I find problematic. I had to prompt the coaches, "What about the tutorial center, what about feed the bears, what about student health services....etc?????"I would urge the directors to train properly and to have a specific script that coaches stick too, also I was really concerned because one coach said, "Come see us, we can tell you who all the good teachers are." This is not what coaches should be doing. They should be giving advice, but to passing on info to students so they can get resources from the experts on campus who can provide this.Helping students apply for grants (not loans) is part of the first year onboarding process, but not the scope of what we do as a retention program or the classroom presentation that was prepared for the Coaches to present. Current training and development includes Certified Peer Educators training and exam, two month long onboarding to learn of campus resources (including in-depth financial aid training) ongoing development to ensure quality contacts, and individualized weekly check-ins with their Classified Coordinator Supervisors. However, we hear this concern loud and clear as it was also voiced at the Academic Senate meeting during a Guided Pathways conversation. We have since instituted formal consulting from the original Petaluma Success Team to ensure the absence of gaps in training that could attribute to this concern and to ensure the highest quality of Coach interactions. Coaches doing classroom presentations were to follow the script/presentation linked here in order to remain committed to the 10 min presentation/classroom visit. As they are peers, they are given latitude to share resources that are most meaningful to their experiences when convering the presentation outline. We are in the process of developing continuously, addressing concenrs. Part of student employment is educating and training for professional roles. 12/18/20Persistence rates are amazing! It makes sense completion rate is lower in this group for first year students. How can Peer Success Coaches increase the number of Instructors they work with? In other words, how can Peer Coaches increase cohorts? I love that the sense of belonging for students is increased for those who interact with the Welcome & Connect Center.Thank you for asking about increasing the number of faculty that work with Peer Coaches. There are different levels of partnership in action with faculty. They range from classroom visits, referrals, incentivizing attendance of coaching appointments, or all of the above. Your best bet is to reach out to Kyle Wallstrum kwallstrum@santarosa.edu and he can pair you with the right approach and the righ team for the courses you teach.
