We, the community of ____________________________ have joined our voices together to help you understand how orchestra
is a vital part of __________(city or school or school district) and to emphasize that to cut it or otherwise damage its sustainability
would have unintended ramifications for many years to come.
Orchestra forms the backbone of instruction for many students, for all of their courses, because it teaches young people how to express themselves
yet enhances their lives and the lives of others in many ways. Statistically speaking, music students perform better on exams than the norm.
As you know, it takes many years of practice and patience to be able to play stringed instruments well. But this has very positive effects
not only on students' overall well-being, but has a trickle-down effect for in-coming classes of younger students.
To state just a few examples, students who participate in orchestra learn the skills necessary for leadership roles in the future. Orchestra students
learn that people wtih differing viewpoints and ideas can successfully work together and produce quality, even beautiful, work.
Orchestra students also learn to manage themselves as well, in ways such as planning their time wisely so that they get their practicing done
with enough time to study other subjects, attend concerts and be prepared for rehearsal. Another way students in orchestra learn to manage
themselves is by regulating their emotions, learning to express them appropriately and when necessary, for example when one finds
a performance or a classmate's work done well, learning to give genuine praise. But not only do students learn to praise each other and
recognize their own progress, students in orchestra learn to evaluate themselves and others fairly and conscientiously, of course due to the
caring and professional educational expertise applied by their orchestra teachers.
Another point which needs to be considered is the fact that school orchestra students also enrich our community in valuable ways. By their hard-won
efforts, and the support of their teachers and families, orchestra students provide music for many special occasions, such as ____________
It is also a well-established fact that orchestra students' brains are improved because of the many processes which simultaneously
occur in manipulating a bowed-stringed instrument.
It also helps ward off cognitive decline later in life.
Taking away this program would do some serious damage to the education of our youth and future classes. Damaging the program now means
that there will be fewer students in it, and fewer students joining it. In fact, our string teachers need your utmost help and kindness to help them
sustain our existing program and to recruit new students during this difficult time.
We believe that with your help and leadership, our school orchestra program can be sustained and supported, but not without your conscious
awareness of its special needs to be able to move forward successfully. Details which have not been considered must be taken into consideration
in consultation with our string specialist(s) _________________________________________
We urge you to reconsider the plans that have been made, in order to sustain one of the most important courses our students can take,
because taking this away or forcing students to risk their health vs taking other college prep courses is neither considerate, nor kind, nor
upholding values that we all hold dear.
We hope very much that our orchestra program will be as supported as possible during this difficult time, because it is a course which brings
light, hope, joy and vision to our community now and with support, it will for future generations.
