GeneralThe climate is changing, and those changes are affecting growing conditions for all crops, including vegetables and fruit. Climate change impacts are not the same in every area, but there are some trends that we are seeing across the Midwest. Two key changes are temperature increases and more precipitation extremes. These temperature changes affect growing conditions for plants, insect pests, and diseases, as well as the comfort and health of people working on farms. Both excess precipitation and drought pose major challenges for raising crops and harvesting them, and both conditions are occurring more frequently across the region.

At the same time that farmers must adapt to these climate challenges, there is pressure on all economic sectors, including agriculture, to do what they can to reduce their emissions. Fortunately, some adaptation strategies also help mitigate agriculture’s overall greenhouse gas emissions. For example, building soil health by adding compost, reducing tillage, and growing cover crops helps fields absorb and store rain, and also pulls carbon dioxide out of the air and stores it in the soil as organic matter, thus reducing the net greenhouse gas emissions of farms.
