4Juan Alexis Tineo-Martinez1981Dominican Rep.443/3/2025removed to Centro Medico Hospital in San Juan, PR A longtime fisherman who worked the sea to support his loved ones"Leg Pain"Juan was arrested during a "maritime interdiction" on February 21st, 2025. He was detained in Puerto Rico with four other individuals, who I.C.E. claims were involved in "narcotics and human smuggling." I.C.E. claims that Juan started to feel leg pain on February 23rd and that he was immediately rushed to the hospital. They claim that he did not respond to treatment and died later that day.
Juan was not listed as arrested. Nor was he captured on American soil.
A independent forensic report states that Juan died from injuries he sustained in a boat accident. Family and friends claim that Juan was a fisherman and had never had anything to do with narcotics trafficking. How does leg pain in a 44-year-old man, who apparently passed an initial medical examination when he was detained, led to death? This one just doesn't feel right.

Hardworking Immigrant: His history—having no criminal record and being released on his own recognizance after his first arrest—suggests he was a person who authorities believed posed no threat to his community.
The Person vs. The Statistic: To the community in Calexico and his supporters, he represented the rising human cost of detention, particularly for the AAPI community, who often face language and medical barriers while in custody.

"Found unresponsive in bunk"https://www.ice.gov/doclib/foia/reports/ddr_CARBONELLBetancourtAled.pdfOn Nov. 20, 2025, a Hialeah police officer observed Carbonell-Betancourt at an “abandoned farmer’s market” at 11:30 p.m, according to an arrest report. The officer warned him about trespassing, asked him to put his belongings on the patrol car hood, and proceeded to pat him down for weapons. The officer asked Carbonell-Betancourt for identification, which he “failed to provide.” It’s unclear whether Carbonell-Betancourt had any documents on his person at the time of the arrest. The 27-year old then ran, and the officer pursued him — using a taser and placing him in handcuffs, according to court records. He was taken to a hospital and charged with resisting an officer with violence, a felony under state law. But documents from the state attorney’s office and court records later show that the charge was later reduced to a misdemeanor for resisting an officer without violence, which they then declined to pursue. A snapshot from the arrest report from November 2025 of Aled Carbonell-Betancourt. Another case shows he was involved in a family dispute on Nov. 16 and charged with two felonies, but the case was closed in December. An elderly relative said that Carbonell-Betancourt “threw a rock through the residence’s front door” which hit the family member on the head, according to court records. 74Mena Mabel Ojeda CortezColumbia47Mabel was a kind woman who loved helping those most in need. She was cheerful, and she raised a daughter with great love and dedication, instilling in her the value of respect.
She was someone who adored both her maternal and paternal families—a truly joyful person. She and her husband (Jackeline’s brother) shared a marriage of 33 years. They had one daughter. She loved keeping her home clean and tidy. She completed her primary and secondary education and worked transporting school students. She wanted to go to the United States to work there cleaning houses and earn money to help her family.

She is survived by one daughter, one husband, and four pets—all dogs. She loved her plants dearly. We still look after them for her, watering them regularly. She believed in God. She used to refer to Him affectionately as “Papito Dios” — Papa God.

My name is Jackeline. I am Mabel’s sister-in-law. Having known her for 33 years, I had truly come to consider her my own sister.
