This is a compilation of existing tools and resources that companies can use to to aid the target setting process, which requires both internal supply and value chain data and external data to establish baselines, thresholds, and ultimately set ambitious, measurable, time-bound targets . It is a living document, to be updated periodically by the SBTN Ocean Hub. We encourage companies to suggest resources that they might find during their engagement with the SBTN process.

Tips for Finding Specific Assessments: Search by species name, geographic region, habitat type, gear type, or regional management organization. Use filters to narrow down results by stock status, assessment year, or other criteria. Consider the credibility and transparency of the source when evaluating assessments.

Fishery Stock AssessmentA fishery stock assessment is the scientific process of collecting, analyzing, and reporting on the condition of a fish stock and estimating its sustainable yield. Stock assessments are the backbone of sustainable fisheries management.

Targets can be developed and set using data from stock assessments specific to a given seafood stock and developed for that stock. SBTN emphasizes the use of stock assessments that are recognized and used by local, national, or regional fisheries management authorities and organizations. Using stock assessments will allow companies to determine quantitative thresholds for their targets.

A fishery stock assessment is the scientific process of collecting, analyzing, and reporting on the condition of a fish (finfish or invertebrate) stock and estimating its sustainable yield. Stock assessments are the backbone of sustainable fisheries management. Stock assessment models are the mathematical and statistical techniques stock assessments use to analyze and understand the impact of fisheries and environmental factors on fish stocks.


Scientific studies that are performed independently of management authorities may also be used when the former is not available. Seafood certification and ratings reports, such as those from organizations within the Certification and Ratings Collaboration or recognized by the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative may also be used to find the relevant stock assessment data.

Indigenous and Local KnowledgeIndigenous and local knowledge (ILK) refers to dynamic bodies of integrated, holistic, social and ecological knowledge, practices and beliefs pertaining to the relationship of living beings, including people, with one another and with their environments. It is also referred to by other terms such as: indigenous, local or traditional knowledge; traditional ecological/environmental knowledge (TEK); farmers' or fishers' knowledge; ethnoscience; indigenous science; folk science. Data-limited MethodologyIn the absence of stock assessments, targets can be developed with “data-limited” methodologies. Data-limited methodologies are often used to provide fisheries management advice when there is “little or no knowledge of a stock’s size or fishery characteristics ,” using performance indicators and reference points to assess stock health, such as those from records of total catch, effort or catch per unit effort, estimates of stock growth, reproduction, and natural mortality rates. The goal of data-limited methodologies is to improve the performance of a fishery, in the absence of stock and ecosystem assessment information.

Assessments, such as the Environmental Defense Fund’s Framework for Integrated Stock and Habitat Evaluation (FISHE) provide scientific guidance for the sustainable, climate-resilient management of data-limited fisheries.

Risk Assessment FrameworkAn open-source framework that helps companies understand key risk areas when sourcing seafood globally. Industry members can use the assessments to guide sourcing decisions, and to improve with suppliers, source fisheries, and farms.
