Air Purifiers - Main Technologies
8
9
Pre-filterThe majority of the air purifiers listed here have a pre-filter, whether cleanable by the user or not. These filter out large particles and extend the life of the HEPA filter.
10
HEPAThe main air filter standard, High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) dates back to the Manhattan project in the 1950s. This standard specifies the filtration of particles at least 0.3µm (microns) and above, although in practice it will trap smaller particles. Wikipedia
11
CarbonActivated carbon/charcoal adsorbs gases and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Most purifiers now use a combined HEPA/carbon filter. The more carbon the longer the filter will be able to adsorb gases. Only InovaAir and IQAir have carbon filter options that weigh in the kilograms rather than grams.
12
UV-CUltraviolet-C is a biocide that kills/deactives most pathogens. UV-C alone in portable air purifiers is not usually strong enough to achieve much. Can be damaging to eyes and skin if bulb is not shielded.
13
PCOPhotocatalytic oxidation uses a UV lamp (usually UV-C) shone on a catalyst (usually a metal like titanimum). This creates hydroxly radicals, hydroperoxides and superoxides that oxidise and/or inactive pollutants down to 0.001µm. They also usually produce negative and positive ions (see below).
14
Negative IonsNegative ions are produced in nature (lightning, waterfalls etc.). They attach to a pollutants and can deactivate them. This ion/pollutant mix wil clump together and fall to the ground. Some evidence shows direct health benefits.
15
Neg+Pos IonsA twist on the above, negative and positive ions do a similar thing, they attach to a pollutant and deactivate it, although more efficiatious than negative ions only. Known as Bi-Polar (Air Oasis), Plasmacluster (Sharp), Plasmawave (Winix).

CADR
With HEPA/carbon filters the most important metric is the Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR).

Ozone
2 air purifiers produce ozone levels above recommended guidelines (> 0.05ppm) (Air Oasis 3000XG, Greentech Pure Air 3000).
