Mike Toby, Independent Child Advocate, Sonoma County SELPAEmpowering IEP CollaborationDisagreements and differing opinions are common in special education. However, when these move to conflict and dispute, many people look to Alternative Dispute Resolution processes. The Independent Child Advocate (ICA) should be a component of any robust ADR program. ICAs utilize conflict resolution techniques to ensure that the student remains at the center, while the IEP team works towards agreement. This presentation will center on the role of the Independent Child Advocate and what this means for families, schools and IEP team members.
