Why are we doing this? This audit is part of our Discovery phase on the Open Data Publishing project (Project 1) in the ODI's 2017 R&D programme. We aim to research the current state of open data publishing tooling for different forms of data, e.g. CSV/Tabular, streaming/sensor data, geospatial, statistics...
3
4
What questions are we answering?Which tools do we know, and what type of data do they cover?Note: Tools, not methodologies. We will focus on tools for publishers, so portals with no specific features for publishing may be out of scope
5
Are those tools up to date, actively maintained and effectively supported?
6
What does the market for open data publishing tools look like? Is there a variety of commercial offerings? Are there healthy open source communities?
7
8
How are we reaching these results?
First phase of this audit is processing a long list of tools gathered from ODI team members. The list may grow as we run a broader survey of the open data community (see below)

What next?Once we have conducted this first pass at auditing known open data publishing tools, we will conduct a broad survey in the open data community which will aim to both fill any gap in our knowledge of the tools, but also get a better idea of the needs of the community re- tooling. This will be followed by a number of workshops which will allow us to get a more in-depth sense of the needs around open data publishing tools, and ultimately allow us to understand the gaps between the current ecosystem of tools and the needs of its users.
