The purpose of this application is to request a further five years of support for an Institutional National
Research Service Award (years 26-30) which we have held for 25 years to support multidisciplinary,
interdepartmental post-doctoral training focused on the neurobiology of substance abuse with a strong
emphasis on neuroimaging, molecular and familial genetics, pharmacoepidemiology, behavior, neural circuits,
and pharmacology. We request support for six postdoctoral fellows, as we have had for the past five years –
filling all slots consistently. The fellowship will usually last two years for PhDs and often three for MDs due to
their lack of research training in pursuit of their medical degrees. Fellows with a wide variety of backgrounds
will be recruited including: Psychology, Psychiatry, Genetics, Medicine, Anthropology, Sociology, Biology,
Neuropharmacology and Neuroscience.
The primary research training experience is the apprenticeship model – conduct of supervised research
under the tutelage of one or more preceptors who are well established researchers, and experienced mentors.
The trainee's work is usually focused on a single but broad ranging research project developed jointly by the
preceptor and trainee. Mentored research takes up approximately 70%-80% of the trainee's effort. The
remainder of the training program is made up of lectures, seminars, reading courses, individual tutorials and,
when appropriate, formal didactic course work available in our graduate and medical school. Tutorials in
neurobiology and genetics are tailored for trainees with specific interests that may or may not fall into their
major area of focus. To arrange these tutorials, the program coordinator and preceptor identify areas of
specific interest and set up the tutorial for the trainees with one of our preceptors or tutors who best meets the
training objective. The main research interests of the five Departments involved in this grant (Psychiatry [as the
central, administrative department], Anesthesiology, Psychological & Brain Sciences, Neurology and Genetics)
are broad yet all have a heavy focus on neurobiology in its broadest context and/or pain and pain management
(i.e., anesthesiology). These Departments as a whole offer more than 30 hours of relevant seminars per week
dealing with the subject matter of this grant and are open to any of our interested postdoctoral fellows,
although to be sure we cannot envision any circumstances that would encourage attendance at all, or most, of
these seminars. Some careful selection must be made to ensure that trainees focus on their main research
and career objective, mentored research. None-the-less, it is reassuring to have that much ancillary training
available to amplify or to broaden the perspectives of our trainees.

Training in the Science of Co-Occurring Disorders5T32DA037202-08BUDNEY, ALAN JEFFREYPSYCHIATRYDARTMOUTH COLLEGEHANOVERNHSCHOOLS OF MEDICINE34This renewal application proposes a plan to sustain and enhance a unique training program in an emerging
area of trans-disciplinary research, co-occurring substance use and other psychiatric and medical disorders
(COD). The need for this scientific focus is vital given that COD are more the norm than the exception among
those with addictive disorders. The philosophy of this program charges that to effectively impact the problems
of addiction and other common psychiatric and health disorders, one must be fully aware of their co-existence,
etiologies, phenomenology, and clinical manifestations. Our evolving program leverages unique resources and
opportunities available at Dartmouth. Five diverse research groups (Center for Technology and Behavioral
Health, Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, Norris Cotton Cancer Control Research Program,
the Department of Psychiatry’s Addiction Research Program, and the Program of Experimental and Molecular
Medicine-Neuroscience) provide COD-focused opportunities in behavioral and neurobiological mechanisms,
behavioral and pharmacological treatment development, technology-assisted innovations in assessment and
treatment delivery, implementation science, and health services and policy. Training faculty include MD and
PhD investigators with strong histories of training young scientists and outstanding records of extramural
funding to support their research programs. Currently our T32 faculty have 24 NIH-, 3 NSF-, and 1 PCORI-
funded projects. During the first 4 years of this program (the initial cycle of funding), our training slots have
remained at capacity with high quality trainees, and we have now trained or are in the process of training 4
predoctoral and 7 postdoctoral T-32 funded trainees and two other trainees who participated in our program
but were funded by other sources. These trainees have authored 75 peer-reviewed publications related to their
training activities and were first author on 45% of these. Our trainees have presented their research at many
national and local scientific conferences, and all but two have completed capstone projects in a secondary
area of interest with an alternative mentor. All the trainees who have or are about to complete the program
continue in research intensive positions or have continued in the next step of research training towards
becoming independent research scientists. Our evaluation process has yielded highly positive feedback, and
also resulted in planned enhancements to our training program. This renewal application proposes to maintain
an active census of 3 predoctoral and 4 postdoctoral trainees. We have developed a revised a recruitment plan
that takes advantage of new Dartmouth initiatives to address our continued difficulty attracting and enrolling
underrepresented minorities to the program. Overall, the first cycle of T32 funding has resulted in the
successful development and implementation of a vigorous training program that is effectively preparing young
scientists to engage in collaborative and transdisciplinary research that embraces and addresses the co-
existence of addiction and other psychiatric and health disorders.

The present proposal is a continuation of an interdisciplinary, predoctoral training program in research on
substance use disorders (SUDs) currently in its 29th year as a NIDA-supported training grant. The objective
continues to be the preparation of individuals for careers that require broad knowledge and research expertise
in addiction science, with emphasis on the abuse of drugs and alcohol (alone or in combination), consistent
with the Collaborative Research on Addiction at NIH (CRAN). Only predoctoral trainees with an established
interest in pursuing research related to SUDs are selected from a substantial pool of competitive applicants at
the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (UNC-CH). The environment at UNC-CH provides optimal
resources for training in addiction science, including rapidly advancing 21st century methodologies. First, the
training program includes a core of faculty mentors whose research and teaching activities provide a broad
spectrum of research training opportunities. These include research programs focusing on motivated
behaviors, opioid and cytokine neurobiology, astrocytes in SUDs, the neuropharmacology and neurobiological
effects of abused substances, investigations of the immune system and of HIV/AIDS and drug abuse,
behavioral genetics of drug abuse and vulnerability and impulsivity. The inclusion of mentors from the Clinical
Psychology program and from UNC’s Obstetrics & Gynecology Department brings research opportunities in
translational areas that will enrich the trainees’ knowledge in substance abuse treatment. Research
laboratories are located within the Psychology and Neuroscience Department, the Psychiatry Department, the
Neuroscience Center and the Center for Alcohol Studies. Second, all trainees receive formal training in basic
neural and behavioral sciences and statistics. More focused training related to addiction science takes place
through several interdepartmental courses and seminars and extensive laboratory research. Third, the
program offers many opportunities for professional development through a yearlong Seminar in Addiction
Science which trainees take part in every year as they progress through the program. The Seminar in
Addiction Science provides a) training in grant writing, b) practice in making research presentations, c)
numerous presentations by outside scientists in addiction science and d) introduction of a range of career
options. Fourth, the trainees regularly present their research at national meetings and receive training in
teaching skills. Finally, UNC-CH is committed to maintaining ethical conduct in research and instruction on this
topic is integrated from a variety of sources and takes place over the course of the entire training period. Over
the last 15 years, 43 trainees have received their PhD (average time to degree: 5.5 yrs.) and the program has
successfully trained several individuals from underrepresented groups. Upon completion of the program,
trainees have established careers within addiction science, in both academic and research-intensive settings.

T32 Translational Addiction Research Fellowship Program5T32DA028874-11CHILDRESS, ANNA ROSEPSYCHIATRYUNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIAPHILADELPHIAPASCHOOLS OF MEDICINE44Addictions and the associated public health problems of HIV transmission, crime and violence, exact a severe
toll on our nation, costing billions annually in health care, lost productivity, and incarceration. As there have
been rapid advances in neuroscience and genetics in the past two decades, we need to speed the "forward"
translation of this knowledge into more effective clinical treatments for the addictions. Conversely, for addiction
treatments with some known efficacy, we can now apply new neuroscience and genetic tools in "backward-
translation" -- e.g., finding why a treatment works well for some individuals, yet not at all for others. To help
meet the need for skilled translational researchers, this application proposes continuation of a successful (17
total trainees; 13 in the current funding period) NIDA T32 Translational Addiction Research Fellowship at the
University of Pennsylvania. The (pre- and postdoctoral) training program make explicit a long-standing
translational tradition at Penn, integrating clinical and basic research strengths to create trainees, whether
clinical or preclinical, Ph.D.s or M.D.s, who will accelerate addiction science in the next decade. The emphasis
on translation is reflected at each level of the program - through the Co-PIs (clinical and basic, Drs. Childress
and Pierce), the internal and external advisory board members, the formal didactics, the "dual" (clinical -
preclinical) mentoring, and in the trainees' mentored research projects. The translational emphasis of the
program is driven by the recognition that addictions are complex disorders, multi-determined by interaction of
genetic vulnerabilities, exposure to drug, and a host of modulating (e.g., early trauma ,stress, cultural norms)
influences. Trainees are thus offered state-of-the-art knowledge about these interacting determinants through a
didactic series specific to the program, and through mentored projects that may range from molecular and
genetic studies, to brain systems (neuroscience and neuroimaging), to clinical treatment trials, and drug policy.
This wide range of choices is enabled by the long history of excellence in addiction research at the University,
reflected in the several academic research Centers (Penn Center for Studies on Addiction; Translational
Research Laboratories/CNB; Center for AIDS Research; Center for Integrated Nicotine Research (CIRNA), the
Treatment Research Institute, and collaborative laboratories offering skilled, successful mentors to the
Fellowship. Mentored research also takes place within several affiliated treatment settings (VA, Presby-Penn,
community methadone clinics, and mobile HIV Prevention units), critical for translating new research findings
into the "real world”.

Training in Advanced Data Analytics to End Drug-Related Harms (TADA)5T32DA050552-02COOPER, HANNAH LPUBLIC HEALTH & PREV MEDICINEEMORY UNIVERSITYATLANTAGASCHOOLS OF PUBLIC HEALTH50Abstract: Collins and Riley, Directors of NIH and of NIH’s Office of Behavioral and Social Science Research,
have described the 21st century data revolution as potentially “transformative” for social and behavioral science
(SBS) research. Evolutionary leaps in technology have generated vast arrays of novel sources of Big Data: in
2018, for example, 500 million microblogs were tweeted daily, and 2.48 billion users engaged with Facebook.
The data revolution has also catalyzed massive growth in administrative data, as governments and other
entities digitize their data (e.g., the CDC has data on billions of prescriptions dispensed in the US). Constella-
tions of tweets, posts, and administrative data provide “transformative” opportunities for SBS researchers to
swiftly identify threats to health; characterize-more comprehensively than ever before, and often in real time-
the conditions in which people thrive, suffer, and die; and develop novel interventions.
Nowhere are such transformations more direly needed than to address a 21st century crisis: substance
use disorders (SUD). In 2017, HHS declared the opioid crisis a national emergency, as 11.4 million people
misused opioid analgesics, and overdoses killed >70,000 people, contributing to a drop in US life expectancy.
We are, though, failing to prepare the next generation of SBS researchers to engage these transforma-
tive tools. A scan of syllabi from departments of behavioral and social science in 10 top public health schools
reveals that required methods courses culminate with multilevel and structural equation models, decades-old
methods ill-equipped to leverage emerging data to catalyze transformative approaches to end SUD epidemics.
Supported by 45 Emory faculty from 11 departments, the proposed training program (TADA) will
prepare a diverse cadre of 21st century SBS researchers to develop transformative approaches to end the SUD
crisis. TADA will prepare trainees to ethically, critically, and seamlessly integrate advanced data science
methods into the SBS research lifecycle for SUD. Trainees will learn to: (1) Conduct theoretically-informed
studies of distributions and ecologies of SUD-related harms using advanced data science methods; (2)
Conduct theoretically-informed studies motivating and assessing policies and programmatic interventions that
may affect SUD-related harms and services; (3) Disseminate findings to multiple stakeholder communities to
strengthen efforts to end SUD-related harms; (4) Critically apply principles of the ethical and responsible
conduct of research. TADA will engage trainees in a comprehensive mentoring program; a 2-semester course
and lab consisting of 5 “modules,” each of which pairs a specific SBS theory with an advanced data science
method; journal clubs; dissertation workshops; $5000 dissertation grants; and research rotations at Emory, the
CDC, and the Georgia DPH. We are seeking 5 funded slots across two cohorts, each with 2 years of funding,
for pre-doctoral students in 4 programs (Behavioral Science, Health Policy, Sociology’s Health Track, and
Clinical Psychology). TADA will extend its reach beyond funded trainees via a TADA Certificate program.

UF Substance Abuse Training Center in Public Health5T32DA035167-08COTTLER, LINDA B.PUBLIC HEALTH & PREV MEDICINEUNIVERSITY OF FLORIDAGAINESVILLEFLSCHOOLS OF PUBLIC HEALTH53Abstract
The mentors of the University of Florida (UF) NIDA T32 Substance Abuse Training Center in Public Health are
eager to submit the renewal for five additional years of funding to train diverse pre and postdocs for careers in
drug use, addiction, and consequences of addiction with a population science and public health lens. Situated
in the Department of Epidemiology in two Colleges of the six in the UF Health Science Center, its 19 faculty
mentors/preceptors (from 10 departments in 6 colleges) base their model on five premises: reduce health
disparities, fill a significant need for training, develop authentic partnerships, utilize a mentoring mosaic
approach and value social justice and high ethical standards. Their collaborations with each other have been
significant (7 per faculty). Directed by Linda Cottler and Co-Directed by Sara Jo Nixon, this T32 renewal is
justified by: a) increased drug use in Florida, especially opioids and cocaine; b) a significant shortage of public
health scientists in the drug abuse field; c) UF’s strong academic and research environment as a top 10
University in the third most populous state; d) the underrepresentation of NIDA and other NIH T32 training
programs in the Southeast US region; e) a strong and enthusiastic group of mentors who have an excellent
track record to train substance abuse researchers; and f) the commitment of UF. Since 2014, with 4 predoc
and 2 postdoc slots awarded, our T32 has trained 9 predocs (4 minority/disability) and 5 postdocs (3 minority);
this year both postdocs are minority scholars and 3 of 4 predocs are diverse for an overall diversity rate of
83%. The predoc publication record is 5.9 per person with 2 years of training; the postdoc publication rate in
the same timeframe is 5.3 per person. No slots have gone unfilled. Going forward, the UF T32 is requesting
5 pre and 3 postdoc slots. A number of valuable approaches are encouraged for career growth of both the
mentor and mentees; robust centers and institutes contribute to this growth. While this T32 has made
excellent progress since 2014, there are additional goals to achieve. More than ever, public health
researchers, especially epidemiologists, need to work together with scientists from other disciplines to develop
best practices for addiction research through all translational stages. Thus, the T32 renewal will: i. provide
trainees with an apprenticeship style education to master skills to critically evaluate data, conduct multiple
aspects of addiction research and become successful investigators who contribute to the field; ii. be a beacon,
model program, with a high return on investment as evaluated through outcomes that matter, and iii. train
individuals to understand, apply and maintain the highest ethical standards in their science and scholarship
and be socially responsible investigators. We at UF are ready to train the next cohort and facilitate trainees’
contributions to the science of addiction medicine using all of the newest tools.

Substance use disorders constitute a major, high-impact health problem.This competitive renewal
of the training grant Neural and Pharmacological Mechanisms of Abused Drugs (T32 DA 07287)
at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) proposes to address the large gap between
the problem of addiction and efficacious solutions by mentoring the next generation of scientists
prepared and committed to the search for answers. The overarching goal of the Training Program
is to provide nascent scientists with the knowledge base, technical expertise and professional
skills needed to advance knowledge in the addictions and to move these advances toward new
therapeutics. The 23 faculty mentors/co-mentors have a wealth of training and career
development successes, extensive collaborative networks and expertise in translational addiction
research conducted with modern technologies. Our objectives are to provide exemplary training
in translational research in the neural bases for drug abuse and addiction, drug discovery and
medications development, and the medical consequences of drug abuse and addiction.
Strategies to achieve these objectives include providing well-funded, state-of-the-art research
opportunities and facilities,effective mentoring and monitoring plans, challenging curricula and
supportive interactive programs (e.g., short-term clinical rotations, journal clubs, workgroups,
seminars), and first-rate program activities that develop the professional skills needed for
advancement towards an independent career. The culmination of our efforts is the success of our
trainees as complete, contemporary scientists equipped with the tools to advance the mechanistic
understanding of addiction and move these advances toward new therapeutic approaches to its
treatment.

The George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University seeks an additional five years
(years 16-20) of support for a predoctoral and postdoctoral research training program, funded since 2002
focusing on services to, treatment of, clinical correlates of and policies affecting minority, underserved
populations and those particularly vulnerable to substance use disorders and co-occurring and comorbid
conditions. Maximizing an effective transdisciplinary collaboration between the Brown School and the School of
Medicine, the Transdisciplinary Training in Addictions Research (TranSTAR) Program provides a stimulating
and collaborative research training environment to produce exceptionally well-trained addictions researchers.
TranSTAR faculty are particularly well-suited for addressing challenging addiction research issues such as
polydrug users, non-treatment seeking, incarcerated populations, or those with mental health/health
comorbidities, and URM and other populations disproportionately impacted by social issues such as poverty,
racism and discrimination, housing and educational inequality. TranSTAR holds a superlative training record,
with 100% of its 10 past predoctoral trainees currently in addictions research, 40% tenured, 53% with external
funding during and 90% subsequent to training. Postdoctoral trainees are similarly accomplished: with 100% of
past trainees in addictions research, 37% tenured, and 50% with external or university funding. With a highly
diverse training faculty, led by two faculty from social work/public health and psychiatry, TranSTAR has
demonstrated success in recruiting and retaining women and URM scholars; current predoctoral trainees are
100% women and 67% URM; diversity of postdoctoral trainees overall is similarly excellent (50% women, 50%
URM). TranSTAR leverages successes and “lessons learned” with on-going monitoring and evaluation to
ensure that trainees (three pre- and two postdocs/year) have the necessary knowledge and skills to: (1)
conceptualize meaningful research questions with practical service and policy implications; (2) execute
rigorous, cutting-edge projects; (3) develop competitive grant applications; and (4) translate and disseminate
results with potential for high impact. TranSTAR provides:(a) transdisciplinary and specialized addictions
coursework and seminars taught by leading faculty in social work, public health, psychiatry, statistics, and the
social sciences; (b) structured mentoring, advising, and “hands-on” experience on addictions research projects
for postdoctoral trainees over two years of training and for predoctoral trainees across three years of mentored
research; (c) proposal critique review sessions; (d) predoctoral teaching assistantships in Master-level courses
in addiction, comorbid conditions, statistics, and research methodology; (e) professional development sessions
on presentation skills, effective communication of research findings, and “soft-skills” related to networking and
effective collaborative team science; and (f) on-going, multi-faceted responsible conduct of research training.

The Integrative Training in the Neurobiology of Addictive Behaviors Program at The
University of Chicago offers training for both pre- and postdoctoral trainees in drug
abuse-related research. We have an outstanding panel of core faculty trainers, who are
productive researchers, with successful training credentials of both pre- and postdoctoral
trainees. Their expertise and therefore their training areas, range from molecular biology,
electrophysiology, pharmacology and animal models of drug addiction, to the social,
behavioral and psychopharmacological aspects of human drug use, including etiology,
treatment and drug policy. Our goal is to prepare the next generation of scientists to
investigate the etiology, prevention and treatment of drug abuse with integrative
approaches.
We propose a program for 3 predoctoral and 4 postdoctoral trainees. Trainees will be
supported by the Training Program for 1-3 years. Trainees obtain specialized intensive
training in their `home' laboratories, but they are also exposed to the full breadth of
addictions research outside their own area, from molecular to policy. In addition to their
doctoral program requirements, predoctoral trainees will participate in a bi-weekly
training grant seminar and a didactic course providing a broad overview of addiction
(history, epidemiology, pharmacology, treatment and policy). Trainees will also
participate in 20-hour rotation experiences in laboratories conducting addictions
research distinct from their own expertise. The organizational structure will include an
Executive Committee making overall training decisions, a Selection Subcommittee to
ensure a good flow and balance of trainees, a Program and Review Subcommittee to
monitor trainees' progress through the program, and an External Advisory Committee to
provide expert outside consultation.
The University of Chicago provides a unique environment with both a long history of
interdisciplinary collaboration and recently a significant commitment to neuroscience
research. This provides a rich intellectual context for trainees in drug abuse related
research. To ensure that there is substantial interaction among the trainees, and
between trainees and trainers, we will schedule bi-weekly meetings consisting of journal
club presentations, seminars by invited speakers, and didactic classes. We will devote
resources to recruiting underrepresented minorities and we will provide comprehensive
training in ethical conduct of research.

During the current funding period, this program has continued its outstanding record of educating scholars
as independent investigators and leaders in drug-abuse research. Since the submission of our last
competitive application in 2015, competition for support from this program has been robust, and all slots
have been filled. Twenty-five pre-doctoral and 14 post-doctoral trainees have received support from the
grant, these trainees have published 149 papers, and 10 pre-doctoral and 5 post-doctoral trainees have
earned individual NIH fellowships. Looking forward, we are poised to continue this record of success. We
have recruited 2 new drug-abuse faculty in pharmacology as well as 5 new faculty members with relevant
skills and interests from other departments. Moreover, recognizing the many strengths of the Department
of Pharmacology and Toxicology, the dean has authorized the recruitment of up to 10 additional well-
established faculty to join our team of 22 drug-abuse faculty. Additionally, a large increase in the number
of clinical faculty in recent years justifies our request to increase the number of both pre and post-doctoral
trainees by 2. Further support for this requested increase comes from the fact that there are more than 90
research grants from NIDA at this institution, and this is the only institutional training grant. Our preceptors
provide trainees with “cutting edge” expertise in molecular, cellular, behavioral, clinical, and translational
research. The program continues to emphasize pharmacology, but it has truly developed into a university-
wide program open to trainees from all schools and incorporating multiple disciplines. The broad academic
scope of the program is accomplished through rigorous core courses and a wide variety of advanced
electives, a high level of collaboration among mentors to include reciprocal service on thesis committees,
and multiple excellent seminar series. Additional initiatives are proposed to increase the diversity of the
trainees and enhance mentor training. These academic opportunities complement a research
infrastructure supported by a NIDA P30 grant that provides for the development of genetically altered
animals, sophisticated bioanalytical technology, and expertise in advanced gastrointestinal and
neuropharmacology research methodologies. Academic and research training is further supplemented by
guidance on teaching, professional development for a career in drug-abuse science, and all aspects of
becoming a productive, independent researcher. Our goal is to build on the program’s established record
of success by continuing to provide a rigorous and supportive atmosphere for training leading scholars in
the drug-abuse field for the future.

The proposed T32 program objectives are to: 1) provide rigorous interdisciplinary pre-
doctoral and post-doctoral training in health services research related to addiction and HIV
or addiction and HIV/HCV co-infection; 2) mentor trainees to conduct studies that involve
the development, testing and implementation of strategies to improve HIV testing, linkage,
and adherence to care, and use integrated approaches to service delivery related to
substance use and co-occurring HIV and HCV; and 3) prepare trainees to disseminate
research findings and translate them into practice and policy. Addiction, HIV and HCV
commonly co-occur and require integration of care. To address the need for health
services researchers focused on the co-occurrence of addiction, HIV, and HIV/HCV co-
infection, we propose the Integrated Care for Addiction, HIV and HCV Research and
Education (ICAHRE) training program within the PhD and MS programs in Health
Services Research (HSR) at the Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH), in
partnership with the Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) and Boston Medical
Center (BMC), New England’s largest safety net hospital. The program will provide
training both to pre-doctoral trainees in the PhD program, and to post-doctoral trainees
(physician investigators) in the MS program who have a strong research interest in
addiction and HIV and/or HCV, thus addressing the need to train a variety of clinical
researchers for work in this understudied area. The formal training period will encompass
the coursework phase of the trainee’s degree program, and include research seminars,
research rotations, mentored research leading to the degree, and both didactic and
experiential training in the communication of science. Our focus on implementation and
organization science and the translation of research into practice, and our model of
mentoring teams with a Primary Research Mentor, a Research Methods Mentor,and a
matching Clinical Implementation Mentor for trainees are among this proposal’s
innovations. Collectively, our training faculty brings substantial knowledge in addiction,
HIV, HCV and different approaches to HSR, including using both qualitative and
quantitative methods.

This T32 training program was established in 2014 to train the next generation of pre- and post-
doctoral scholars in the prevention, treatment, and care of HIV and substance use among individuals in
the criminal justice (CJ) system. The training program is a partnership between the Columbia University
School of Social Work (SSW) and the Mailman School of Public Health (MSPH), with strong support from
longstanding partnerships with a number of research centers, schools, and departments at Columbia
University Medical Center. We propose to renew the program by continuing its unique position as the only
NIDA-funded T32 program jointly run out of a school of social work and school of public health as well as
the successful administration and activities; the renewal also proposes to focus on two key significant
themes for the nation and the field: (1) the opioid epidemic; and (2) implementation science. The training
program provides: (1) interdisciplinary research instruction and training for pre-doctoral students and post-
doctoral fellows on the intersecting issues of substance use (particularly opioid use disorders and
overdose), HIV, and implementation research with the CJ system and CJ-involved populations; and (2)
hands-on, mentored experience conducting independent research in the study implementation of
evidence-based HIV and/or substance use prevention, treatment, and care for criminal justice-involved
populations. This program is designed to strengthen the pool of researchers by increasing the diversity of
academic backgrounds—e.g., social work, public health, medicine, sociology, political science,
anthropology—and those from underrepresented populations—e.g., underrepresented minorities (URM),
people with disabilities, individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. Participating faculty are leaders in
HIV, substance/opioid use, implementation science, and criminal justice fields, with strong track records of
support from NIH. They are also well-qualified to provide training, as evidenced by their strong records of
mentorship of pre- and post-doctoral early career scholars. The program supports 4 pre-doctoral students
and 4 post-doctoral trainees per year at capacity (a total of 6-8 pre-doctoral trainees and 8-10 post-
doctoral trainees in the renewal period). Thus, the program will add a substantial number of highly
qualified new scholars to the field focusing on HIV, substance use, opioid use disorders and overdose,
and implementation science among criminal justice-involved populations. Dr. Nabila El-Bassel and Dr.
Lisa Metsch will continue to serve successfully as PIs/Co-Directors for the proposed training program,
which provides an opportunity for two noted and distinguished scientists to collaborate and lead this
initiative. They each contribute over 25 years of experience in the fields of HIV, substance/opioid use
disorder treatment and overdose prevention, implementation science, and criminal justice.

become one of the nation's largest and oldest NRSA programs specializing in training behavioral scientists for
careers in drug abuse research and related issues, especially HIV/AIDS. BST has trained 218 predoctoral and
postdoctoral trainees—nearly half of them racial/ethnic minorities. This application requests authorization to
maintain the current number of positions—7 postdoctoral and 9 predoctoral trainees—during each of years 36
to 40. BST is housed in the Rory Meyers College of Nursing at New York University. It collaborates with the
Center for Drug Use and HIV/HCV Research (CDUHR), NIDA's largest and oldest P30 center focusing on drug
use and infectious diseases (also housed at Myers), and National Development and Research Institutes, Inc.,
a freestanding research institute that specializes in drug abuse research. The Principal Investigator, Dr.
Gregory Falkin has managed the BST program for 34 years; he works closely with Dr. George De Leon, the
program's Co-Director and Scientific Advisor, in all aspects of training and program operations. The BST core
faculty comprises 42 CDUHR affiliate investigators who currently manage nearly 100 grants—about half are
funded by NIDA—providing ample opportunity for trainees to be mentored by leading experts on a wide range
of NIDA research studies. The BST mission is to prepare behavioral scientists, especially racial/ethnic
minorities, for careers in drug abuse research. The program aims to accomplish this by: (1) recruiting and
appointing promising behavioral scientists, at least one third of whom are minorities; (2) providing advanced
training in substance abuse research and theory, research methods and practices, and the responsible
conduct of research; and (3) mentoring and advising trainees on their careers as well as their research and
NIH grant submissions. Distinguishing features of the BST program that combined make it a truly unique T32,
are that (a) trainees comprise a diverse group—they come from a wide range of behavioral disciplines and
ethnic/racial backgrounds; (b) the core faculty includes 42 leading experts on drug abuse who manage dozens
of NIDA-funded grants; (c) predocs are enrolled at various universities, not just NYU; (d) the trainees receive
highly intensive training that involves classroom learning (they meet as a group all day every Monday in a
variety of BST seminars and workshops, which are supplemented by CDUHR trainings) and hands-on
research experience on projects of their own design and NIDA studies—they have the flexibility to choose the
projects they work on—and postdocs write grant applications; and (e) all fellows receive considerable
mentorship from multiple mentors, including the Program Directors, core BST faculty, and other faculty (e.g.,
thesis committee members). BST's long-standing success is evident in the significant contributions of its
fellows who have distinguished themselves through research and publications, which number over 1,500, and
their success as independently funded NIH investigators—they have obtained about 100 NIH grants.

Abuse”) and seeks funding for Years 2017-2022. The program will now be led by dual PIs: Dr. Timothy P.
Flanigan (the PI for the past 15 years), who will direct mentoring and training, and Dr. Josiah D. Rich, who will
direct research project development. This training grant focuses on applied clinical and substance use
research in Rhode Island and beyond. Rhode Island has among the highest rates of substance use in the
nation and ranks 6th in the country for overdose rates. Our substance use training program emerged from the
Brown University-affiliated Miriam Hospital Immunology Center, the largest HIV care center in Southern New
England, where approximately 60% of the patients engage in substance use (alcohol, cocaine, opiate,
methamphetamines, and poly-substance abuse). Our program's strengths are our interdisciplinary
collaborations to reduce the infectious disease consequences of substance use, including HIV, hepatitis B and
C, sexually transmitted infections, and TB. This training program brings together core expertise from the
Division of Infectious Diseases, the Providence-Boston Center for AIDS Research (CFAR), the Centers for
Behavioral and Preventive Medicine, the Brown University Center for Statistical Studies, and the Brown
University School of Public Health. This interdisciplinary training program focuses on HIV prevention and
treatment, including innovative PrEP programs, and correctional health, with a primary focus on reducing the
infectious consequences of substance use as well as overdose. Our mentors have strong track records in
applied clinical, substance use, translational science, correctional health research, and community-engaged
scholarship.

This application responds to PA-20-142 and is the second competing continuation of a postdoctoral
training program entitled “Training in drug abuse research: behavior and neurobiology” at the University of Texas
Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA). This Program has become an integral component of the
recently launched Addiction Research, Treatment & Training Center of Excellence, the umbrella organization for
a large variety of activities related to substance use disorder (SUD) on campus and extending into the San
Antonio community. During the current period of support, all 6 training positions were filled with fellows selected
from a pool of highly qualified applications. Since 2016, a total of 14 trainees have been or are currently
supported by the Program, including 11 women (78%); 4 of the trainees (28%) are underrepresented minorities.
Among 10 fellows that completed training, 8 are in academic positions. During the current period of support,
trainees published 40 manuscripts (28 as first author), submitted 11 grant applications, and made 111
presentations at scientific meetings. Increasingly trainees are participating in community outreach activities,
advocating for SUD research, education, and treatment. This Program sponsors numerous career development
activities, many of which are attended by students and fellows, in addition to trainees in this Program. The well-
funded research programs of the 18 Regular and 3 Junior faculty mentors span cell signaling to neurochemistry,
preclinical behavioral pharmacology, and human clinical trials. The Program enjoys outstanding financial and
other support from UTHSCSA (e.g., 10% salary for the Director), including an Office of Postdoctoral Affairs that
offers many programs on career development, grant writing, and teaching, among others. Program Leadership
includes a Director, Associate Director, Coordinator, and an Internal Advisory Committee. An External Advisory
Committee evaluates the Program as part of an annual Advisory Committee Meeting in San Antonio; the details
and operation of the Program as well as the training experience of fellows have improved as a result of
recommendations by the Advisory Committees. The training environment at UTHSCSA is outstanding and
includes excellent seminars, grand rounds, journal clubs (including the Addiction Journal Club hosted by this
Program), formal training in rigor and reproducibility, formal training in the responsible conduct of research, and
an annual international SUD meeting entitled Behavior, Biology & Chemistry: Translational Research in
Addiction. This competing continuation requests 5 additional years of support for 6 positions in this highly
successful, vibrant Program that is contributing to the NIDA mission of recruiting and training the next generation

and data science approaches to the neurobiology of substance abuse, with the dual strategies of: (1) training
candidates with expertise in data science, applied mathematics, computer science, and complex systems to
apply their skills to the neuroscience of addiction; and (2) training candidates pursuing addiction research from
neuroscience, psychiatry, psychology and genetics in the theory and application of Big Data methods,
including network analysis, machine learning algorithms, and Bayesian statistical models. Trainees will be
paired across disciplines, and academic stages, for research collaboration and reciprocal tutoring to facilitate
the development of proficiency in each trainee's new field. Each trainee will also be dual mentored, their
secondary mentor being their partner's primary. Over its five-year duration, the program will provide three
years of funding for each of five pairs of pre- and post-doctoral researchers, with an initial cohort of four (two
pairs), and additional pairs entering in each of the middle three years. The core curriculum will incorporate: (1)
the established complex systems and data science graduate certificate at the University of Vermont; (2) course
work in neuroscience, psychology and addiction, including classes focused on developing human subjects
research skills; as well as (3) specialized courses designed to directly and effectively bridge the gap between
the core disciplines. Trainees will also attend a biweekly journal club and monthly seminar, led by senior
participants in the program, to further support the acquisition of multidisciplinary research skills.
The overarching aim of the program is to produce researchers poised to apply state-of-the-art analytic tools to
understand the neurobiology of drug abuse. The focus will be characterizing the neural substrates of addiction
and other comorbid psychopathologies, always with an eye toward clinical application. Recent increases in the
quantity and quality of large-sample, multi-modal datasets that address the neural, genetic and environmental
substrates of addiction make this a propitious time for such a training program. Researchers at UVM are ideally
suited to provide this training as there exist close links between addiction research, cognitive neuroscience,
complex systems and data science, and the mentoring faculty have access to exceptional datasets that are
ideal for interrogation with Big Data methods. Armed with coherent domain knowledge and practiced with
advanced methods for complex systems, trainees will develop analysis pipelines that: (1) incorporate
sophisticated aggregation of longitudinal and multi-modal datasets, including various neuroimaging modalities,
genetic information, survey and clinical data; (2) harness the power of supercomputing and modern machine
learning algorithms to step beyond linear and univariate effects; and (3) address questions of immediate
clinical importance to substance abuse that can inform the determination of risk factors, treatment and
intervention strategy, and policy decisions.

Institute for Neuroscience (INS) at the University of Texas at Austin (UT-Austin). This program is becoming a
nationally-recognized center of excellence in neuroscience training with the creation of a new Department of
Neuroscience, construction of the new Dell Medical School with Clay Johnston, a neuroscientist, as the
inaugural Dean, and recruitment of outstanding Faculty. Faculty have appointments in Neuroscience,
Neurology, Psychology, Psychiatry, Pharmacy, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical
Engineering, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Molecular Bioscience, and Integrative Biology, and
resolutely participate in 8 prestigious centers that are part of the INS, including the Center for Learning and
Memory, Center for Perceptual Systems, Institute for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Waggoner Center for
Alcohol and Addiction Research, Dell Pediatric Research Institute, Behavioral Neuroscience, Imaging
Research Center, and Computational Visualization Center. The program has particular strengths in the
neuroscience of perceptual systems, learning and memory, and addiction research, and Faculty provide
excellent training across levels of inquiry from molecules to biochemistry, structure, physiology, behavior,
neuroethology, and evolution with advanced computation and theory at all levels. This breadth provides
graduate students with extensive options for training in cross-disciplinary research, and the training Faculty
have substantial funding to foster their research. We propose predoctoral funding for 4 new trainees and 4
second-year trainees (totaling 8 per year). The training program requirements include: a Boot Camp, laboratory
research rotations, seminar presentations, 2 principles of neuroscience courses, a science/ethics course
detailing responsible scientific conduct, a course in experimental design and statistics, and 4 electives
including a neuroscience of disease course. They also participate in at least 1 specialized journal club related
to their project. Students join a research lab by the summer of year 1, and complete coursework and qualifying
exams, including oral defense of a review paper at the beginning of year 2. Our recruitment strategies have
become even more successful as reflected in the quality and diversity of the applicants. The broad
interdisciplinary training uniquely prepares our trainees for research success in neuroscience, which is crucial
for advancements in the etiology, pathophysiology, and treatment of brain diseases. Furthermore, the founding
of the Dell Medical School on the UT-Austin campus will greatly facilitate our translational neuroscience
research.

Despite clear and convincing evidence for the efficacy of preventive interventions in preventing substance use
and abuse (SU/A), the public health impact of these programs has been limited by inadequate uptake in
community settings. This application seeks to train 3 pre-doctoral and 3 post-doctoral fellows annually to
conduct research that reduces the gap between real-world practice and evidence-based preventive
interventions targeting SU/A. The proposed background is a renewal of our current NIDA-funded T32 (currently
in Year 5) and builds on a lengthy and successful 33-year history of T32 training that has been funded by
NIMH from 1987-2014 and NIDA from 2014-present. Our training program is informed by the translational
research cycle and Chambers and Proctor's recommendations on training for early career Dissemination &
Implementation (D&I) researchers. The training is housed at ASU's REACH Institute, and participating units
include the Arizona State University (ASU) Department of Psychology and School for Social and Family
Dynamics. The interdisciplinary training faculty will be drawn from these units, as well as existing collaborators
from College of Health Solutions, W.P. Carey Colleges of Business, Edson College of Nursing and Health
Innovation, Fulton Schools of Engineering, Hugh Downs School of Human Communications, School of
Criminology and Social Justice, and the School of Social Work. Training faculty conduct numerous NIH-funded
projects in which collaborative research teams design, implement, and evaluate theory-based preventive
interventions in natural service delivery settings and study the implementation science questions related to
successful program uptake. Training faculty have unique strengths in SU/A prevention, D&I, culture and health
disparities, and research methodology (particularly quantitative methods). The program is guided by an
External Training Faculty of national experts in implementation science and a Community Advisory Board
composed of decision leaders from service delivery settings (schools, courts, health care, and mental health
care settings), with whom we partner on community-based research projects. Training consists of mentored
research apprenticeships, an ongoing training seminar (including training in ethics and career development),
required courses in SU/A and D&I, and other relevant experiences based on Individualized Training Plans that
will be co-created with mentors. Through this tailored combination of coursework and research
apprenticeships, trainees acquire skills in designing interventions for implementation, models of cultural
adaptation, technology-based interventions, community-based participatory research, implementation theory
and design, organizational characteristics, and economic analysis. The research contributions of our trainees
will increase the adoption of evidence-based interventions in real world practice, helping to realize their public
health impact at the population level.

been very successful, competitively attracting fellows who are productive and successful during and after their

academic medical center settings. We now propose a 5-year renewal cycle for SAETP. CUMC offers a rich
array of research and training resources for SAETP, based in the Department of Epidemiology, Mailman
School of Public Health, in collaboration with the Department of Psychiatry. SAETP has a cells-to-society
perspective on substance abuse epidemiology, offering training at multiple levels of causation ranging from
molecular to large-scale social forces. With its specialized training for substance abuse epidemiology careers,
SAETP is unique at CUMC. Dr. Deborah Hasin, SAETP director, is an internationally recognized substance
abuse epidemiologist with extensive successful mentoring experience. She will continue to direct SAETP in its
next cycle. The disciplines of the 23 other internationally recognized SAETP faculty members include
epidemiology, psychology, medicine, sociology, biostatistics, neuroscience and genetics, making for an
interdisciplinary program. SAETP faculty have outstanding records in publishing, funding, and mentoring
productive and successful trainees. At any given time in the renewal, SAETP will be training 4 pre-doctoral
fellows (for training periods of 3-5 years each), and 4 post-doctoral fellows (for training periods of 2-3 years
each). Fellows will be selected based on interest in and commitment to substance abuse epidemiology,
experience, and prior accomplishments. Recruitment efforts to enroll under-represented minority trainees have
been successful, with 25% of SAETP fellows from such groups to date; we will continue these recruitment
efforts. SAETP will provide broad, intensive training in substance abuse epidemiology and related areas; depth
in one or more areas of specialization; methodological and conceptual skills, including formulation of key
research questions and testable hypotheses, and how to design and conduct high-quality substance abuse
epidemiology studies. Fellows will receive mentoring and co-mentoring, and participate in many training
components, e.g., a weekly substance abuse epidemiology faculty-fellow seminar; academic courses; field
placements. Training will enable fellows to publish papers, hone their presentation skills in seminars and
conferences, learn to write grant proposals; become knowledgeable about the responsible conduct of
research, and enhance collaboration and leadership skills.

Interdisciplinary clinical research on the combined effects of substance abuse and HIV disease on the
central nervous system (CNS) is of considerable public health importance. Despite this, few laboratories
address this critical topic and the current training program is the only one dedicated to preparing the next
generation of investigators to conduct this research. In this proposed second renewal of our NRSA T32
training grant, “Training in Research on Addictions in Interdisciplinary NeuroAIDS (TRAIN),” we aim to
accelerate our contribution to the field. We will continue to recruit talented and diverse pre- and post-
doctoral trainees whose academic development will be furthered by an accomplished multidisciplinary team
of mentors and the extensive academic resources at UC San Diego. TRAIN has been highly successful in
the current funding period–since 2016, the 8 trainees produced 55 research manuscripts (22 first-authored),
88 conference presentations, and 6 book chapters, as well as 2 extramural NIH-funded grants (1 under
review, impact score=21, 2nd percentile), 3 supplements to NIH-funded grants, and 2 intramural pilot grants.
In this second renewal, we plan to enhance our training grant by augmenting faculty expertise, didactics,
and training in new methodologies to support our new complementary theme of the complex biological
mechanisms underlying the CNS consequences of HIV and substance use. Factors of particular focus
include the microbiome and gut brain-axis, systemic and CNS inflammation, neuroimmunology, and
biomarkers. This focus will augment TRAIN continuity themes of neurobehavioral functioning (e.g., frontal
systems behaviors, decision-making, memory) and health-related everyday functioning (e.g., treatment
adherence, vocational outcomes). Given our previous success and the growing demands of the field, we
propose to increase our steady state number of trainees to four pre- and three post-doctoral trainees. Our
students and fellows will be actively engaged in individualized career development plans, such as applied
research training, didactics, and targeted clinical experiences. TRAIN faculty, all with strong training
interests and robust histories of collaborative research, consists of 25 primary mentors across multiple
academic levels and disciplines, with considerable expertise across the aforementioned scientific themes.
We also have made organizational enhancements (e.g., addition of internal TRAIN committees) to further
ensure continued progress towards the accomplishment of trainee goals. TRAIN is led by R. Heaton, Co-
Directors I. Grant and D. Moore (new to this role), and Associate Directors J. Iudicello and E. Morgan; this
team will oversee all training, scientific, and administrative aspects of the program. TRAIN will be housed
at the HNRP-CMCR within the Department of Psychiatry, which is a resource-rich research and training
environment in substance abuse and neuroHIV research. Our central goal remains unchanged: to train,
mentor, and guide the next generation of researchers on combined CNS effects of HIV and substance use.

The purpose of this application is to continue the University of Vermont’s highly successful 30-year T32 training
program in the human behavioral pharmacology of drug use disorders. During the past 15 years, we trained 16
predoctoral and 22 postdoctoral fellows. Among those 38 fellows, all but two remain involved in research-related
careers. Twenty-five have completed the training phase of their careers. Among those 25, 14 (58%) have
primary university faculty/research-institute positions, six (24%) have been principal investigators (PI) on one
or more NIH research awards, seven (28%) are employed by government agencies, two (8%) work in industry,
and collectively they have more than 500 peer-reviewed publications on addiction. In addition to being a
productive training program, the training our fellows receive in human behavioral pharmacology fills a unique
niche in addiction research. Our fellows learn to identify basic behavioral and pharmacological processes
underpinning addiction and to translate that knowledge into effective clinical interventions and policy. We
propose to continue our emphasis on human behavioral pharmacology in the next funding period, continuing
our expansion into tobacco regulatory science and the impact of addictive behavior on health outcomes. Since
the last T32 renewal, we renewed our U54 Tobacco Centers of Regulatory Science (TCORS) and P20 Center
of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) awards in behavior and health, and obtained a new UD9 Center
Award in Rural Addiction. These Centers add value to our training program via access to additional seminars,
guest lectures, interactions with additional fellows and guests, and new research and career opportunities.
Indeed, three of our T32 fellows have taken research scientist positions with FDA’s division on tobacco
regulation. We propose to continue supporting four predoctoral and four postdoctoral training slots with this T32
award. The eight members of the proposed training faculty consist of seven PhDs and one MD. These faculty
members are PIs on three NIH/HRSA center grants, five R01s, two R33/34s, two R21s, and one private-
foundation award creating a rich range of training opportunities in addiction research. All faculty and fellows are
located at a single, on-campus site composed of 8000 sq. ft of newly renovated space. Fellows are selected
based on scholastic excellence and commitment to a career in addiction research. Predoctoral fellows are
enrolled in the Department of Psychological Science PhD programs in experimental or clinical psychology
where they complete required coursework including those developed for this training program, and complete
master’s and doctoral theses. Postdoctoral fellows primarily focus on conducting and supervising independent
research, with additional opportunities to further their education via coursework. Each fellow has a primary
mentor from the training faculty. Fellows attend weekly seminars in addiction research and ethics. Additionally,
they present their research at two or more national scientific meetings annually. The training period is generally
4-5 years for predoctoral and 2-3 years for postdoctoral fellows. The overarching goal of the proposed training
program is to continue developing productive, independent, state-of-the-art addiction researchers.

One of the keys to understanding the actions of drugs of abuse is a systematic study of the
neurobiological basis of drug abuse. Such studies must involve multi-disciplinary approaches to examine the
effects of drugs of abuse at several different levels of brain function. This is the goal of the current application,
the Neurobiology of Drug Abuse Training Program, which proposes to continue a successful tradition of NIDA
training at Wake Forest School of Medicine (WFSM). This program requests funding to train four predoctoral
students in a multi-disciplinary program in the neurobiology of drug abuse. The program consists of 15 faculty
members at WFSM, with research interests including molecular biology, receptor pharmacology, brain imaging
techniques in humans and non-human primates, electrophysiology, and behavioral analysis of drug self-
administration. The research of the faculty is supported by a significant number of federally-funded grants
related to the field of substance abuse. A central focus of research for the training program is the NIDA-funded
Center for the Neurobiology of Addiction Treatment, which offers highly integrated collaborative research
projects among a number of faculty. The program is organized around three principal areas of research:
Molecular/Cellular Neurobiology, Neurobiological Systems, and Behavioral Neurobiology. The training program
offers a specific course in drug abuse related to each of these three areas. Predoctoral students have a choice
of two different Ph.D. degree tracks: Integrated Physiology/Pharmacology and Neuroscience. Although these
programs have their own individual requirements, specific drug abuse-related topics are integrated into the
standard programs. The training program offers specific seminars and journal clubs for trainees. The program
also contains specialized components dealing with grant writing, rigor and transparency in research, and ethics
in scientific research. Recruitment of students will be aided by the fact that the field of neuroscience is one of
the fastest growing disciplines in the biological sciences. In addition, recruitment of applicants from under-
represented minorities will be a high priority, including a bridge program with North Carolina Central University.
In summary, the Neurobiology of Drug Abuse Training Program not only offers students outstanding
opportunities for education and research in the neurobiology of drug abuse, but is also a valuable resource for
the field of drug abuse by providing trained young investigators capable of independent scientific careers.

will offer late-stage predoctoral (PhD) students and early-stage postdoctoral fellows an integrated program of
training in substance use disorders (SUDs) research that leverages the exceptional expertise in cellular,
molecular and behavioral neuroscience, translational neuroscience, neurology, psychiatry, genomic science
and pharmacological sciences at ISMMS. The overarching goal of the program is to provide rigorous, broad-
based, individualized, and multidisciplinary training with enhanced opportunities for mentoring, collaboration,
and career development designed to prepare the next generation of independent investigators in SUDs
research. At the heart of this new Training Program will be a superb training faculty representing remarkable
diversity in basic and clinically relevant topics; from synaptic plasticity and chromatin remodeling; cognitive,
social, and emotional disorders; disorders of mood, motivation, and anxiety; addiction; human
neuropsychology; and cognitive neuroscience – all relevant to SUDs. The Training Program comprises inter-
related components: academic coursework, laboratory training, non-curricular training activities (seminars,
retreats, etc.), testing/evaluation, teaching opportunities, mentoring, and career development activities. The
diverse research environment at ISMMS will provide for laboratory opportunities in core areas of strength,
including in translational neuroscience, computational neuroscience, neuropsychiatric genomics,
neuroimaging, epigenetics, and synaptic and behavioral plasticity, and the study of diverse model systems.
The Training Program includes more than a dozen initiatives that have been newly created or adapted from
existing programs to support training in SUDs, which emphasize multidisciplinary collaborations, and the
promotion of exceptional rigor and creativity. Pre- and post-doctoral trainees will participate in required and
optional training activities to ensure strong grounding in basic neuroscience and opportunities to learn from and
with peers and faculty from across ISMMS, including those in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, the
medical school, interdisciplinary Centers and Institutes, and the Friedman Brain Institute. Creating a structured
culture of mentoring across the career continuum of participants is a hallmark feature of the Training Program.
Formal and informal advising and mentoring will be integrated into training across roles and levels, including
mentoring opportunities for training faculty and sponsors (preceptors). Integrating predoctoral and postdoctoral
training through formal mechanisms will provide greater continuity in the overall training experience, enhanced
opportunities for collaboration among trainees interested in pursuing careers in SUDs research, and will benefit
the neuroscience research effort at ISMMS. The Training Program in Substance Use Disorders will prepare the
most promising trainees for productive, independent careers in SUD research at all levels – from preclinical
genetics, cellular and molecular mechanisms of the disorders, to clinical research and interventions.

Training in Addiction”. Spanning five academic departments and three Colleges, the program provides multi-
level, cross-disciplinary, team science training that spans the full translational research gamut from molecular
to population-based approaches to solutions to curb or halt drug addiction. With program priorities of training
innovation, diversity, connectivity and outcomes, this renewal request seeks to further the development of a
program of training excellence that is dynamic and evolving in response to the rapidly changing societal,
legislative, research, clinical and community responses to addiction. Quantitative and qualitative data support
the claim of program excellence for the current funding cycle. A program evaluation plan is based on progress
towards seven training objectives including (1) foster a shared knowledge of the broad societal and health
impacts of drug use disorders and of the diversity of engaged scientific disciplines, (2) provide an individualized
path to diverse addiction impact career areas and maximize post-training outcomes, (3) foster diversity as a
strength for maximizing program impact, (4) provide career building environments emphasizing
interdisciplinary, team science, translational research, (5) innovate advances in training approaches to
research ethics, professional development, and program connectivity, (6) evaluate both bibliometric and
translational science benefit outcomes of the program, and (7) foster the engagement of physicians and other
clinicians in the career building processes of the program. Program administration, connectivity and oversight
would remain the roles of the program Director, co-Associate Directors, Governance and Steering Committees,
and external evaluators/advisers. Continued support is requested for three levels of trainees involving three
predoctoral students, four postdoctoral fellows, and four annual M2 summer addiction research interns,
complemented by institutional support of one annual PGY3 psychiatry resident, to foster the addiction
translational science training objective of the program. Program-wide courses, faculty-facilitated seminar and
presentation series, professional development lectures and workshops, and elective mentored research
training emphasis/impact areas would support translational research training opportunities across the full
spectrum of T0 to T4 translational science. Mechanisms of trainee and program evaluation focus on both
scientific bibliometric and translational human health and society benefit indicators of program impact.
Significant institutional commitment and resources support the accrued value and continued success of the
training program. A continued trainee-led program of community outreach would support a program goal of
bringing addiction science and impact into the community. The UAMS T32 training program has established a
cross-discipline network of connectivity between addiction researchers and clinicians that were previously
unlinked to contribute to the building of a translational science workforce.

Substance Use Disorders and Other Psychiatric Conditions (NIDA DA037183) -- following the completion of its
first five-year funding cycle. Among the current portfolio of NIDA funded training grants, only one program
other than ours (Dartmouth) has comorbidity as a primary focus. This is striking given co-occurrence
prevalence of Substance Use Disorders (SUD) with other psychiatric conditions and health conditions (e.g.
diabetes), and the extent to which either SUD or the comorbid disorder can go under- or untreated in
conventional treatment settings. The goals, elements and resources of the renewal program retains critical and
effective elements of the initial funding period while incorporating important lessons learned. Long term goals:
The proposed program will develop a cadre of scientists with research expertise in comorbidity mechanisms,
antecedents and correlates, diagnostics, and psychosocial and pharmacological interventions. Component
objectives are to provide each trainee with a working knowledge of comorbidity research including: (a)
translational science from Early Phase Clinical Trials to Community Based Participatory Research
perspectives; (b) effective research strategies for comorbid conditions across populations and ethnic and
cultural groups (e.g. American Indian, Hmong, Somali). Accomplishing programmatic features will capitalize on
(a) the spectrum of faculty expertise providing mentoring across multiple areas, and (b) integration across
training programs and departments. Key Elements: (1) Involvement of scientists and clinicians with diverse

to be trained to design and conduct clinical trials that translate the latest findings in basic neurobiology and
pharmacology of substance use into clinical practice and the development of new treatments. For over two
decades The Division on Substance Use Disorders of the Columbia University Department of Psychiatry and
the New York State Psychiatric Institute has provided such training to a large cohort of clinical investigators.
The purpose of this renewal application is to continue our postdoctoral program focused on training primarily
physicians and psychologists for research careers in substance use disorders. The main objective of this
program, now in its 24th year of continuous funding, remains to provide both the research skills and clinical
expertise necessary to design and carry out independent translational research on the etiology and treatment
of substance use disorders. Most of our trainees are encouraged to submit a K award, and about half of our
trainees do so while the remainder continues work in affiliation with academic or research institutions. Both
outcomes promote our goal of providing research skills and developing future leaders in clinical and treatment
research on substance use and related disorders and academic medicine more broadly. Fellows are offered 2
years of training, while a third year may be offered to fellows making excellent progress but needing more time
to develop their K awards or other other research proposals.
In this competing application we are requesting 5 additional years of funding for 6 postdoctoral fellows
to be enrolled in the program each year. We have developed a successful approach to training that includes: 1)
Didactic introduction to clinical research in substance-related and addictive disorders that incorporates a
comprehensive overview of the substance abuse field, an introduction and advanced course in statistics,
weekly journal clubs and methodology seminars, and a formal course and ongoing instruction on the ethical
and appropriate scientific conduct of clinical research; 2) Research apprenticeship where each fellow works as
a junior collaborator under the close supervision of a senior investigator who serves as a preceptor and
mentor; 3) Clinical experience in the major modalities used to treat substance use disorders; and 4)
Development of teaching skills where each fellow is provided opportunities to provide lectures/seminars to
medical students, psychiatric and other medical housestaff and at journal clubs and scientific meetings.
The traditional foci of training remain clinical trials and human behavioral pharmacology. Further, over
the past 5 years we have recruited new faculty in order to expand research opportunities for trainees across
the translational spectrum and into new frontiers of treatment development. New directions include animal
models to human translational work, development of new technologies for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes,
health policy, implementation, and services research, adolescent/young adult substance use and neuroimaging.

(administering the Neuroscience Interdepartmental PhD program), Dept. Psychology, Dept. Molecular &
Medical Pharmacology, Semel Institute of Neuroscience and Human Behavior, the first three offering doctoral
training programs. TNDA has five aims: 1) to recruit and enroll highly qualified candidates who are interested in
and committed to translational research in drug addiction (including vigorously recruiting from
underrepresented populations); 2) to provide hands-on experience at all stages of addiction research, including
evidence-based hypothesis formation, experimental design, data acquisition and analyses, and preparing
findings for oral and written presentation; 3) ; to ensure that trainees develop expertise in a specific research
area and supporting technology, while providing opportunities for trainees to acquire the breadth of knowledge
needed to conduct translational research in drug addiction; 4) to provide the resources, opportunities, and
training that will enable trainees to use preliminary data in generating novel hypotheses and specific aims for
NIH grant proposals, laying the groundwork for success in securing funding to pursue independent research;
and 5) to provide career guidance so that trainees can successfully identify and secure professional positions
allowing them to use the skills and knowledge obtained from TNDA. Accordingly, TNDA provides
comprehensive interdisciplinary training through formal education and supervised research. Methodological
issues and techniques are emphasized, and rigorous education in the ethics of conducting scientific research
is provided. The participating mentors have active research programs at all levels of analysis ─ from cell and
molecular biology and integrative study in animal models to brain imaging and cognitive neuroscience in
humans. TNDA trainees have a primary project in a specific mentor's laboratory, but gain exposure to other
areas of research through laboratory rotations, common core training, as well as by formal and informal
interaction among TNDA faculty and leadership, including organized professional and social events for TNDA
trainees. The Program Director and participating faculty have excellent records in research and past
mentorship and strive to provide trainees with the knowledge needed to plan and conduct integrative,
translational studies.

Substance use disorders are increasingly described as highly heritable and brain-based. Preclinical work has
established that deviations in subcortical and frontal networks are associated with progression from
experimentation to use to compulsive drug-seeking, to cycles of abstinence and relapse. Current models
emphasize the importance of genetic vulnerabilities to intermediate phenotypes that predispose to substance
use and dependence, including neural mechanisms of behavioral disinhibition, reward valuation, negative
reinforcement, and negative affect that exacerbates withdrawal/craving. These models also emphasize how such
mechanisms might be differentially impacted as a function of neurodevelopment. These various mechanisms,
their neural correlates and genetic underpinnings, are increasingly being investigated in the context of large
consortium efforts using novel technologies such as the ABCD study, various arms of the Human Connectome
Project, TOPMed, AllofUS, and the UK Biobank, to name a few. However, today’s students are not necessarily
prepared to leverage these resources to advance the field. We propose a mixed predoctoral/postdoctoral training
program, with a central focus on neurobehavioral measures (e.g., neuroimaging), genetically informative
designs, and cutting edge quantitative methods to uncover and characterize neurobehavioral mechanisms in the
development of addiction. The University of Minnesota is a leader in the investigation of behavioral and molecular
genetics of addiction, neurobehavioral mechanisms of substance abuse and its development through the use of
preclinical, pharmacological, and neuroimaging techniques, and in quantitative modeling. Led by co-PDs Luciana
and Vrieze and with the goal of producing the next generation of scientific/academic leaders, the proposed
training program will train six predoctoral and three postdoctoral students each year in quantitative methods and
the genetics and/or neurobehavioral mechanisms of addiction. A diverse group of trainees will be selected using
stringent criteria from the pool of graduate students (predoctoral) as well as nationally (postdoctoral). The
University of Minnesota’s Department of Psychology will lead this effort, with the support of an interdisciplinary
team of 19 mentors in addition to the PDs. Each trainee will be funded for a two-year period, will be co-mentored
by scientists with topical as well as quantitative expertise, and will pursue a combination of didactic training, lab-

This is a proposal to continue with years 16-20 of a postdoctoral training program in
brain imaging and drug and alcohol abuse. We have at our disposal a variety of brain
imaging tools that have yielded valuable insights into reward systems and addiction. The
need for such a dedicated program is driven by the emergence of new and innovative
techniques to view both the anatomical and functional aspects of the brain under a
variety of conditions related to drug and alcohol abuse such as: acute intoxicating
effects, tracking cue-induced craving, measuring cognitive effects, detecting persistent
neurological and cognitive defects, monitoring withdrawal, sleep disturbances,
medication compliance, tracking treatment progress and medication development.
Because the nature and spectrum of the disciplines involved in imaging are complex, a
new breed of scientists with backgrounds in imaging technology, multimodal analyses,
neuroscience, pharmacology, addiction medicine and treatment are needed to more fully
explore the neurobiological bases of drug abuse and fill the anticipated needs in the
United States—our Training Program has been filling this void. Over the past 14 years
we have successfully directed an integrated, multidisciplinary Drug Abuse and Brain
Imaging Training Program that is supported by the McLean Hospital/Harvard Medical
School and the Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging at the MGH. Our program
emphasizes both clinical and translational research directives that have solid
foundations in magnetic resonance [imaging, functional and spectroscopy], EEG, PET
and most recently Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS). The infrastructure of the training
program is built around two Siemens 3T clinical scanners (a TIM Trio and a Prisma), a
Varian 4T clinical scanner, a 9.4T small bore animal magnet, both low and high density
EEG/ERP and an Imagent NIRS system. Both animal and clinical PET is available at our
MGH site. Our mentors are well funded by NIDA, NIAAA and NIMH and as such offer a
unique breadth of research opportunities for our trainees. Our postdoctoral training
program is structured to provide the trainees, over the course of 2 or 3 years, with the
basics of imaging techniques, followed by placement in one of four distinct research
tracks supporting each trainee's specific career goals: 1) Technology and
Instrumentation; 2) Basic-Clinical; 3) Clinical-Treatment; and 4) Translational. In
collaboration with the Martinos Center, we offer training in concurrent PET/MRI. The
combination of didactic training in brain imaging and psychopharmacology with practical
applications in a variety of highly successful research laboratories provides our trainees
with the skills to utilize a broad range of brain imaging techniques as they embark on the
next decade of research on how drugs and alcohol affect the brain.

This competing application seeks an additional five years (Years 6-10) of support for a post-doctoral research
training program in pain and substance use disorders. The magnitude of these two problems in the US is
astounding. More than 100 million Americans have pain that persists for weeks to years and over 20 million
meet diagnostic criteria for an alcohol/drug use disorder. According to the National Academy of Medicine’s
(NAM) report, Relieving Pain in America and the Surgeon General’s report Facing Addiction, these problems
cost society almost $1 trillion annually. Contemporary neurobiologic, psychological, and epidemiologic
research as well as the tragic experience of the opioid addiction epidemic show a clear intersection of pain and
SUDs. Two of the NAM committee’s recommendations for improving research at a national level are (1)
increase support for interdisciplinary research in pain, and (2) increase the training of pain researchers.
Similarly, NIDA’s strategic goals and the Surgeon General’s report call for the multidisciplinary training of
scientists to address the complexities of SUD research.
In this proposal, we describe a collaborative, postdoctoral (PhD, MD/PhD and MD), interdisciplinary training
program that will produce scientists with rigorous grounding in pain and SUD research. The accomplished
faculty are all committed to interdisciplinary collaboration and mentorship across their substantive areas of
expertise, which range from cells-to-society. The training program includes both required and elective
coursework, mentored research experiences, an individual integrated research project, seminars, and
exposure to professional development skills, including grant proposal and manuscript writing. The training
program housed in the Division of Pain Medicine, Department of Anesthesiology, Stanford University School of
Medicine, is intended to develop postdoctoral trainees’ skills, so that they will become independent
investigators in the fields of pain, SUD and their intersection. The training program will be led by Dr. Sean
Mackey, in collaboration with a steering committee comprising senior scientist/mentors. They will oversee the
training, scientific, and administrative aspects of the program, including a rigorous process of internal and
external evaluation. In summary, this training program will bring together a talented group of post-doctoral
trainees, an accomplished team of interdisciplinary mentors, an effective administrative structure, and a world-
class research environment at Stanford University. The combination of talent and environment will launch the
next generation of researchers who will advance our scientific knowledge and practice of pain and substance
use disorders.

understanding drug addiction within specific levels of analysis (e.g., behavioral, clinical, and molecular), the
problem of drug abuse will not be solved by focusing on a single level of analysis. If the next generation of
researchers is to make meaningful progress, they must be well-rounded scientists with an appreciation that
drug abuse is a multi-faceted problem, while possessing the flexibility to respond to and incorporate rapidly
evolving technologies that will enable them to understand mechanisms and develop treatments for drug abuse.
To prepare trainees for success in the next decade and beyond, our program emphasizes a team-driven, inter-
disciplinary approach based on the translational model. Our program is successful because it brings together
12 core faculty members who are committed to integrative training and have a long history of collaboration on
questions integral to drug abuse research. They include senior and junior investigators, molecular
neurobiologists, cognitive neuroscientists, epidemiologists, and clinical scientists. They come from several
departments in the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Public Health, and all have joint
appointments in the campus-wide Program in Neuroscience. Working together in state-of-the-art facilities, this
group has access to a pool of highly talented trainees motivated to pursue careers in drug abuse research. Our
training program develops trainees by emphasizing three key components: integrative course work,
translational research training, and professional skills development. Course work covers basic neuro- and
psychopharmacology, provides an integrative view of biobehavioral processes in substance use disorders, and
brings a translational perspective to theoretical and empirical knowledge. Research is guided by a mentor in
molecular, systems, cognitive, or clinical neuroscience closely integrated with a co-mentor representing a
complimentary level of analysis. This integrative approach is reinforced through discussion groups, attendance
at colloquia, and participation at national meetings. Instruction in ethical scientific behavior includes formal
course work and campus workshops as well as specialized instruction led by a core faculty member who has
many years of experience leading seminars on ethical issues unique to substance use research. Trainees also
learn to develop skills in grant writing, manuscript preparation, teaching, and community outreach and organize
an annual program retreat with outside experts in drug abuse. In short, our program relies on a combination of
course work and research training aimed at integrating and translating bench and bedside approaches to
produce scientists well prepared for productive and transformative careers in drug abuse research.

Since 2005 the Prevention and Methodology Training Program (PAMT) T32 has met a critical need in the
training of drug abuse prevention scientists by nurturing scientists focused on integrating prevention science
and highly innovative methodology. The objective of PAMT, which is unique to NIDA’s portfolio, is to produce
scientists who lead the application of cutting-edge methods to emerging critical research needs in the
prevention of substance use and addiction. We do this in the context of Penn State’s long-standing dual
commitment to innovation in data collection, design, and statistical analysis methods and to impactful research
on the etiology and prevention of substance use and addiction across the life span. Building on PAMT’s long-
term success training 83 prevention scientists to date, we propose to enhance this successful pre- and post-
doctoral training program with (1) increased depth in formal training opportunities related to our core
competency domains: substance use, prevention science, and innovative methods; (2) strategic initiatives to
build diversity in mentors, trainees, and training; and (3) expanded disciplinary integration by leveraging Penn
State’s deep investment in its new Consortium to Combat Substance Abuse. PAMT is administered through
the Edna Bennett Pierce Prevention Research Center. Drs. Jennifer Maggs and Stephanie Lanza, Program
Directors, and Dr. Rina Eiden, Associate Training Director, lead the program as distinguished substance use
researchers with expertise in prevention science and innovative methods. To achieve trainees’ individualized
training goals, the program offers (1) interdisciplinary instruction on substance use, prevention science, and
innovative methods; (2) mentored experiential training in all aspects of research; (3) training in professional
skills and the responsible conduct of research; (4) proseminars including workshops on methods, health equity,
cultural competence, and goal tracking; (5) a biennial visit to NIH; and (6) formal training in NIH grant-writing,
leading to many successful F31, R03, and K99 grant submissions. An Expert Advisory Committee will meet
annually to provide feedback and guidance related to training and diversity goals. Faculty mentors are leaders
in substance use, prevention science, and innovative methods, with strong track records of NIH support and
mentorship of early career scholars. Forty-five faculty mentors span disciplines such as human development
and family studies, biobehavioral health, sociology/criminology, psychology, and engineering. Our trainees
work toward novel solutions to mounting challenges related to substance use. The proposed renewal supports
7 pre- and 3 post-doctoral trainees per year, with strong institutional support for an additional 3 pre- and 1 post-
doctoral trainees per year. Together, this represents 25 pre- and 10 post-doctoral trainees in the 2021-2026
renewal period. PAMT trainees are engaged in cutting-edge work that rigorously integrates new methods into
prevention research, providing a seamless, holistic approach to understanding and preventing drug abuse. The
scientists we train will be at the forefront of this critical area for many years to come.

world, with rates remaining stubbornly high. Training with a rigorous methodological basis and a
breadth of course work and research experiences is necessary to develop the next generation of
scientists able to lead efforts to reduce the public health burden of substance use disorders.
Accordingly, this renewal application seeks to extend the pre- and post-doctoral Drug Dependence
Epidemiology Training Program, one of NIDA’s oldest continuously funded training grants now
entering its 25th year in the Department of Mental Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of
Public Health. The goal of this training program is to produce the next generation of substance use
epidemiologists who can address this need by: conducting research that will advance our
understanding of the environmental and biological components of the etiology and natural history of
substance use; developing, implementing, and evaluating interventions to prevent and control
substance use; and critically examining substance abuse services, treatment and trends to improve
substance abuse outcomes including HIV-related risk. We will train substance use epidemiologists
who are able to tackle these challenges by emphasizing four focal areas in this iteration: (1)
social and environmental factors; (2) genetic and biological factors; (3) treatment and services;
(4) emerging trends. This training program will capitalize on the interdisciplinary resources at
Johns Hopkins University to provide trainees with the skills and experiences needed to lead
multi-disciplinary research that takes advantage of these emerging opportunities and promotes
overall health and well being of communities. Trainees will achieve this through a rigorous program
of coursework, research apprenticeships, and integrative activities that provide a solid foundation
in the core proficiencies of substance use epidemiology. The program will include 7 predoctoral
students and 7 postdoctoral fellows who are supported by an experienced group of 12 Core Faculty
and 36 Affiliate Faculty. The trainees will be prepared to assume leadership positions in academia
carrying out substance use epidemiology and HIV research typically as faculty in Schools of Public
Health or Medicine, in government formulating research priorities and substance abuse policy at the
local, state, national, and international levels, in private industry conducting applied research
for pharmaceutical companies, and in non- profit agencies or non- governmental organizations
advocating for those with substance use disorders.

This institutional grant requests funds for five postdoctoral positions for interdisciplinary training
and research in neuroimaging. Two general classes of neuroimaging will be emphasized: radiotracer and
nuclear magnetic resonance. The specific imaging methods are described by the following acronyms:
PET (positron emission tomography, MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), including fMRI (functional
magnetic resonance imaging) and DTI (diffusion tensor imaging), and MRS (magnetic resonance
spectroscopy). These imaging methodologies offer real promise for the expanded clinical utility of
neuroimaging in the diagnosis, treatment, and understanding of the pathophysiology of substance abuse
and dependence. However, these new methodologies typically derive from complex, multidisciplinary
sciences, which thereby create a challenging information barrier to their further development and
application in medical practice. The purposes of the proposed program are the following:
- Provide formal course training to postdoctoral fellows, with an emphasis on imaging and clinical research
methodology, and instruction in their underlying multidisciplinary sciences.
- Provide mentored training for fellows to apply these new methods to the interdisciplinary advance of our
understanding of the function of the brain in health, substance abuse, and other psychiatric diseases.
- Provide an integrated research experience for the fellows both in imaging applications and in
methodology. All postdoctoral fellows will be expected to complete at least one research project with an
applications mentor and one with a methodology mentor during their training period.
The integration of training in methodology and imaging applications will be enhanced by the organization
of this program as two interactive tracks of approximately equal size: Methodology and Application. We
expect that the majority of postdoctoral fellows in the Methodology track will have Ph.D. degrees, and
those in the Application track, primarily M.D. degrees or Ph.D. in neurosciences or behavioral sciences.
Each fellow will have a primary and secondary faculty mentor to represent the two tracks.

The long term goal of the training program is to equip our predoctoral students and postdoctoral fellows with
the knowledge base and research skills to compete successfully in the world of substance use disorder (SUD)
research. For the past 24 years, the Drug Abuse Training Program at the Medical University of South Carolina
(MUSC) has trained predoctoral and postdoctoral scholars who are cognizant of multiple preclinical and clinical
dimensions of the SUD problem. The objectives of the training program are to (1) integrate a diverse group of
trainees into various funded addiction-related research programs with appropriate mentors, (2) provide general
knowledge about SUDs and related treatment research, (3) expose trainees to appropriate role models, (4)
expose students to issues related to scientific ethics; rigor, transparency and reproducibility; and diversity
issues, (5) teach trainees communication skills, (6) teach trainees how to prepare a research grant application
and transition to individual fellowships, (7) help each fellow gain an appreciation of both clinical and basic
science research, and (8) assist trainees in their professional development. There has been tremendous
growth and development of neuroscience faculty who conduct preclinical and clinical SUD research in NIH-
funded centers at MUSC within the past decade. Concomitant with this growth has been an explosion in
training program applicants who are eager to learn from this highly interactive faculty. Thus, support to
continue this training program at the level of 8 postdoctoral (2 in level 0, 3 each in levels 1 and 2) and 4
predoctoral trainees per year for 5 years is requested. There are four major areas of preclinical and clinical
research opportunities: neurobiology of drug relapse; sex and gender differences in vulnerability to SUDs;
stress and substance use disorders; and neurobiology and treatment of nicotine dependence. Since the main
sites of research training are in very close proximity to one another, there is coordination of educational
(courses, seminars, journal clubs) and research (preclinical and clinical) opportunities. Coupled to the
environment is a comprehensive training package incorporating didactic material, clinical experiences, and
research experience that provides an ideal training opportunity that is evaluated on an annual basis.
Recruitment and selection of trainees is accomplished by the Program Directors and internal Steering
Committee members. Augmented recruitment and retention of underrepresented individuals is accomplished in
partnership with the College of Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs Office at MUSC. Eligible mentors
are those with actively funded substance abuse-related research projects; matching of trainees with mentors is
by mutual consent. An External Advisory Board is consulted annually for evaluation and recommendations for
program improvement. The NIDA training program at MUSC has been very successful in placing our trainees
in highly-productive postdoctoral and faculty-level positions through which they continue to contribute to SUD
research and treatment.

Overview: For 30 years, this institutional training program at the University of Minnesota has focused on
the preparation of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows for research and study in the field of drug
addiction. The faculty mentors are all members of the University interdepartmental Graduate Program of
Neuroscience. The 13 current trainers span four departments within the Academic Health Center. Our
trainers' research programs are strongly supported by extramural funds. Each shares the common
interest in understanding the changes that occur to the nervous system with drug abuse.
Objective: The proposed program is to support six predoctoral trainees and three postdoctoral fellows:
the same number of trainees supported by the current funding period. The vast majority of predoctoral
trainees are students in the interdepartmental Graduate Program of Neuroscience. This program has
been ranked as one of the top three graduate programs within the entire University. Exceptional
graduate students in departmental graduate programs (e.g. Pharmacology) that minor in Neuroscience
are also eligible. Graduate students become eligible for support at the end of their first year, once they
select a faculty mentor who is part of the training program. For postdoctoral fellows, a strong publication
history and previous training in addiction research are the most important criteria for selection to the
training grant. Of the eligible postdoctoral fellows working in the laboratories of our trainers, only the top
third are selected.
Rationale and Design: The motivation for this training program is for all trainees to experience the breadth
of topics, scientific approaches, and methodologies taken to study drug addiction. Additionally, research
programs across investigators are highly collaborative. This enrichment is intended to maximize the
trainees' potentials for rewarding careers in scientific thought and research. Active classroom activities
and journal clubs, along with a seminar series and a program retreat reinforce the cohesive community.
Additionally, the University's committed support to the neurosciences (over 100 million dollars in just the
last five years) is unequalled at the institution. While breadth is important, each trainee has his/her own
individual development plan. Trainees work with both their mentor as well as additional trainers to further
their specific career goals. This is true for postdoctoral fellows as well, where both the PI as well as
additional trainers monitor progress. Notably, the graduate students and postdoctoral fellows are not the
only ones receiving preparation. Our trainers undergo additional instruction, to ensure they are better
mentors beyond just laboratory advisors, which ensures an optimal environment for training.

Understanding how genetic and environmental factors impact drug use and abuse may be critical for
addiction prevention and diagnosis, as well as the development of novel effective addiction therapeutics.
This application plans to provide 3 predoctoral training slots (for ~2 yrs, starting in the 2nd yr) in the Weill
Cornell Graduate School (WCGS) Neuroscience and Pharmacology Programs aimed at understanding the
impact of genes and environment on drug addiction. A unique feature of this training plan is the diversity of
faculty expertise in both genetic (e.g. sex, single nucleotide polymorphisms, gene splice variants,
dendritic/axonal translation, and epigenetics) and environmental (maternal environment, developmental
stage, and stress) factors that are essential for the emergence of addictive disease. Our faculty is also
noteworthy for the breadth of the approaches they bring to addiction science; we have expertise in studying
how several major abused drugs (i.e. opiates, cocaine, and other psychostimulants) impact neuronal
function from the expression and behavior of single molecules to the performance of complex functional
systems that regulate the behavior of rodents and humans. In addition to our talented faculty, this training
grant will take advantage of the WCGS outstanding research environment, educational resources, and
recruiting activities, particularly our history of attracting and training under-represented minorities as basic
and clinical scientists. Particular strengths of the training grant include: 1) the experience of the Director and
Co-Director in mentoring, teaching and drug abuse research; 2) the broad scope of multidisciplinary
research training provided by the faculty; 3) extensive collaborations and co-mentoring between the faculty;
and 4) the strong emphasis on “bench-to- bedside” translational research. Training grant faculty will be
divided into three groups: 1) Major Sponsors: graduate student thesis mentors with NIDA mission supported
research programs; 2) Training Sponsors: individuals with extensive experience in drug abuse research who
will work closely with Major Sponsors and their trainees; and 3) Minor Sponsors: individuals with NIDA-
mission interests who will collaborate with Major Sponsors and their trainees. Resource Cores comprised of
training grant faculty from all three groups will be established to provide a platform for students to
incorporate approaches from multiple laboratories into their PhD thesis work. Beyond the laboratory, a new
course entitled “Addiction and Society” developed by a group of graduate students in consultation with
faculty, as well as a Drug Abuse focused retreat and WCGS developed programs in grant-preparation, will
provide students with important training experiences in teaching, grantsmanship, and networking that will be
essential for their career development. These courses together with the existing coursework and curricula,
symposia and lectures, as well as each students individual training plan, will provide a solid foundation for
the development of independent basic and clinical scientists in drug abuse research.

This is a renewal application for an interdisciplinary Drug Abuse Research Training Program titled “Training in
PharmacoNeuroimmunology (PNI) Substance Abuse Research” (T32 DA007097-34). The PNI Training
Program <z.umn.edu/pni> meets a well-recognized need to train biomedical scientists at the pre- and
postdoctoral levels in an interdisciplinary and translational field that focuses on the interactions of drugs of
abuse with the nervous and immune systems, and integrates our understanding of these physiological
interactions with their behavioral counterparts. A critical component of the training program considers the role
of drugs of abuse as co-factors in HIV/AIDS, specifically relating to NeuroAIDS. The program has trained 48
predoctoral and 35 postdoctoral (83 total) in the past 15 years. These individuals hold influential positions in
academia, government, and industry. Our 39 primary faculty preceptors are a talented group of laboratory
based and clinical scientists working at these intersections of disciplines. Our well-funded faculty preceptors
have extensive experience as mentors and are committed to training predoctoral students and postdoctoral
fellows in this interdisciplinary setting. To fulfill our training mission with our available resources, we are
requesting funding for 10 predoctoral and 5 postdoctoral slots. All of the elements of a successful training
program are in place and are functioning efficiently and effectively: a formal curricula, including the two core
courses in Neuro-immune Interactions and Neuropsychopharmacology and two colloquium in Substance
Abuse at the Bedside and HIV/AIDS: Pathogenesis, Treatment, and Prevention. Additional critical training
activities include a bimonthly seminar series, a research-in-progress symposium, and a yearly retreat. The new
expanded PNI training components in this application include: a) adding 13 new faculty as preceptors; b)
developing online learning modules for use by program trainees and undergraduate students participating in
the linked summer research program for students of diversity; c) developing a unique research rigor training
component; and d) developing a training experience for postdoctoral fellows focused on nonacademic
positions. The PNI training program is further enhanced by the University of Minnesota strong initiative to
highlight translational research, (Center for Translational Research) and the designation of Addiction as one
major research priority by the AHC, University of Minnesota evidenced by the establishment of Minnesota
Center for Addiction Neuroscience MNCAN. The emphasized commitment to addiction research as a priority,

It is well documented that adolescents that abuse drugs, including those who meet criteria for a
Substance Use Disorder (SUD), frequently suffer from at least one other mental health or
behavioral disorder (Kaminer, 2013). Among youth with a SUD, it is common for at least one
mental or behavioral disorder to co-occur (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2014). The nature
of the substance abuse and SUD-co-occurring disorder association is complex. One model
points to the role of adolescent drug use as a contributor to an elevated risk of a mental or
behavioral problem. Another major conceptual model is that childhood-onset mental disorders
precede drug use, and that drug use also complicates the trajectory of the mental disorder. In
this light, these early-onset internalizing or externalizing problems contribute to psychological,
social and other contextual functional triggers to use substances. No training program in NIDA’s
current portfolio has adolescent SUD and co-occurring behavioral/mental health disorders as a
primary focus. The proposed T32 training program will include a diverse range of research
faculty with considerable expertise in mentoring, administration, and research in adolescent
substance abuse, SUD and related mental health disorders. Training will focus on the mentors’
research that address etiology, prevention, intervention and treatment. The program, which will
accommodate cohorts of three predoctoral trainees (during years 3-5 of their graduate program)
and cohorts of three postdoctoral trainees (for 2 years each), will train a total of 15 predoctoral
and postdoctoral fellows over the five-year period. The training will be characterized by rigorous
program leadership, rich and varied training experiences and resources, administration,
oversight and continuous monitoring from the Training Steering Committee, updating of trainee
resources, and the annual convening of an External Advisory Committee. Trainees and a
Primary Mentor, with additional assistance from an Affiliated Faculty, will develop a personalized
training roadmap via an Individual Development Plan (IDP). The IDP will provide the trainee
guidelines as to advance research knowledge and skills pertaining to at least one of these four
content domains: (1) developmental psychopathology, (2) preventive interventions and
dissemination, (3) treatment and dissemination, and (4) health services practices and
implementation. In sum, the proposed T32 training program at FIU includes all the essential
ingredients for successful training across the spectrum of research activities associated with
adolescent SUD and co-occurring disorders, and the program will serve as a national example of
a training ground for young investigators in this field.

This is the competitive renewal of a T32 training program, the Research Training Fellowship in Substance
Abuse Program (RTFSA-P), which has been in existence since 1988. Despite recent advances in
understanding the neurobiology of addiction, there is a persistent gap in the application of knowledge gained
from basic science studies to clinical practice in the field of addiction. A new generation of behavioral,
psychopharmacology, neuroimaging, molecular genetics and molecular neuroscience studies has broad
clinical implications and these studies bring the potential to bridge the gap between basic and clinical research.
Despite the quality of the available science, actual progress in bridging this gap depends also upon the
availability of appropriately trained young scientists. The purpose of the RTFSA-P is to meet this need by
providing post-doctoral training for a total of 4 physicians or PhDs interested in careers in translational or
intervention research in the field of addiction. The proposed RTFSA-P is a two-year program in the Division
of Addictions (DA), Department of Psychiatry, Yale School of Medicine, and will afford post-doctoral trainees
the opportunity to devote virtually full-time effort, during the initial phase of their careers, to developing the
skills and experience needed to become independent researchers in the field of clinical or translational
research in substance use disorders. The DA is an ongoing, stable addiction research program that now
encompasses over 123 major funded projects including 4 Centers covering a broad scope of topics and
research methodologies. This facilitates research that moves rapidly and in both directions from preclinical
projects (“bench”) to clinical studies (“bedside” and “community”). Applicants will be MDs or PhD post-doctoral
candidates trained in specialties that include psychiatry, internal medicine, clinical psychology, or
neuroscience. Candidates will be selected by an admission committee based on their potential for excellence
in the field of translational or intervention research in addictions. The RTFSA-P program includes (1)
individualized research preceptorship, (2) successful completion of a translational-research project, (3) a core
curriculum, which includes seminars on addiction clinical research and treatment, biostatistics and research
design, the responsible conduct of scientific research and grant writing skills and (4) individualized participation
in seminars of interest in the Department, Medical School and University. The training facilities include the
major institutions affiliated with Yale School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry. At the conclusion of
training, applicants will be well suited for independent careers in translational or intervention research in the

The University of Washington training program in the Molecular Pharmacology of Abused Drugs is designed to

the molecular, cellular and behavioral pharmacological aspects of opioid, cannabinoid, and psychostimulant drug
action, and their abuse. The program emphasizes training in research skills along with career development
professional skills and responsible conduct of research-ethical skills. Faculty mentors provide training in a broad
range of research approaches including molecular pharmacology, electrophysiology, neurochemistry,
neuroinflammation, mouse genetics, viral-based gene expression, optogenetics, chemogenetics and behavioral
pharmacology. In addition to the general, ongoing training typical at this vibrant institution, trainees in this
program experience a coordinated series of events specifically designed for their benefit including invited speaker
seminar sessions featuring internationally respected drug abuse researchers; monthly research progress meetings
featuring local experts in abused drug research; weekly journal clubs on the current literature of opioid,
cannabinoid and psychostimulant research; frequent opportunities for the trainees to enhance their presentation
skills; courses organized for them on the 'Molecular Basis of Addiction' and 'Addiction: Mechanisms, Treatment,
Prevention'; and career development seminars designed to strengthen their scientific and professional
foundations. Faculty mentors are highly collaborative, and trainees benefit from a strongly interactive,
multidisciplinary research program. The training program will continue to be a catalyst for research collaborations
among the participating labs, for technology transfer between labs, and for newly funded collaborative NIDA-
research grants. The trainees are drawn from an outstanding pool of candidates recruited to the participating
graduate programs in Pharmacology and Neuroscience and to the well-respected laboratories as post-doctoral
fellows. We have an active outreach program designed to encourage participation of underrepresented minorities
and fellows from disadvantaged backgrounds. We actively train our students and fellows in responsible conduct of
research and ethical treatment of animal subjects. The program is proud of its 25-year history of success in training

The aim of our multidisciplinary program is to train post-doctoral biomedical, behavioral, health care and other
public health scientists to conduct substance abuse intervention research. An overarching goal is to enhance
the scientific reasoning skills needed to advance treatment research in drug abuse. From our perspective such
research will benefit from interventions guided by sophisticated and fully-developed theory using a
multidisciplinary framework that includes the biological, psychological, social, cultural, and policy context in
which interventions occur. While other institutional training programs may address intervention research, this is
the primary mission for this program. Distinctive features of our training program are: that it is interdisciplinary;
that it embraces no single ideology or theory concerning the nature of dysfunctions related to drug abuse; that
it provides training in early intervention and treatment along a continuum; and that it provides trainees with
highly individualized opportunities to develop competitive grant applications and by doing so, contribute to the
knowledge base of substance-related dysfunction and treatment.
The training experience is structured to provide individualized research experience and training, complemented
by a core academic curriculum to which 20% of fellows' training time is allocated. Four distinct areas are
covered in the curriculum: (1) statistics/research methodology; (2) grantsmanship; (3) ethical issues in
research; and (4) a two-year series of formal courses covering the etiology and treatment of substance abuse
from varying disciplinary perspectives. We also subscribe to a research apprenticeship model under the
guidance of the research mentor. Each fellow's individual research training experience emerges from an
individualized development plan (“training plan”) developed by the fellow, agreed to by his/her mentors, and
reviewed and approved by the Training Committee. The program has a primary emphasis on training in
innovative treatment development and clinical trials research with a secondary emphasis on the translation of
clinical research into services research. Our research in behavioral economics, neuroscience, and behavioral
genetics expands our focus of translational research from basic to clinical. An additional area of emerging
prominence in our training program is tobacco regulatory science.
The expected training program duration is two years but on occasion we offer 3rd years of training, for example
for fellows with less extensive training in research methods; fellows who are cross-training, e.g. training in
Behavioral Genetics for a clinical psychologist; or for fellows in each cohort who need more time to accomplish
their goals of becoming independent investigators. The program accepts on average two new fellows per year.
At any given time there are likely to be four fellows in residence.

translate the findings made “at the bench” to inform clinical practices at the “bedside”. With the alarming
increase in the abuse of prescription opioids it is imperative to understand the mechanisms underlying drug
abuse at a multidisciplinary level to improve evidence-based and formulate effective treatments for patients
with addictive disorders. Our overall goal is to provide trainees with professional skills to pursue productive
academic careers in drug abuse research. Primary objectives of this program include: 1) provide trainees with
either a rigorous laboratory research experience or patient- or population-oriented research experience in
substance abuse research by linking promising candidates with outstanding mentors who are meticulously
selected based on scientific qualifications and experience in drug abuse training; 2) to provide trainees with
essential research skills and information regarding career development in substance abuse research through
structured course work, lectures and seminars, which emphasizes training in ethics and scientific integrity
academic "survival skills," specific research tools and exposure to diverse research methodologies; 3) to
enhance and teach skills in mentorship to junior faculty through active co-mentoring of trainees with senior
faculty with a formal training program. This program will include outstanding mentors who, in addition to
success in their focused areas of research, are committed to teaching broad research skills, such as
performing scholarly reviews of the literature; formulating hypotheses and study design; developing essential
skills in statistics, oral and written presentation of scientific findings and grant writing; understanding issues and
defining potential problems of scientific integrity and ethics. The program leadership will further ensure close
monitoring of trainee progress. Our team of experienced mentors with active, external peer-reviewed funding
are committed to the highest quality research experience, providing state of art training in substance abuse
research. The proposed program incorporates a comprehensive training plan in the responsible conduct of
research and promotes diversity by recruiting and retaining women, and minority candidates. The University of

This continuation application proposes to support 3 pre-doctoral and 3 post-doctoral trainees with a faculty of
20 drawn from six academic and research units of the University of Kentucky. The rich environment provides
opportunities for translational and multidisciplinary bio-behavioral research training in facilities such as the: 1)
Center on Drug and Alcohol Research/Straus Research Building; 2) Center for Drug and Alcohol Research
Translation; 3) Center for Clinical and Translational Science; 4) Laboratory of Human Behavioral
Pharmacology; and 5) Residential Research Facility.
During the most recent five-year funding period, we trained 10 pre-doctoral students and 8 post-doctoral
fellows. These trainees have authored 237 publications and presented 336 papers at local, national or
international conferences. Seventeen of these trainees remain involved in research or academics. Additional
pre-doctoral trainees (N=2) and post-doctoral fellows (N=3) will be added during the final year of the current
funding period to keep all 6 training slots filled. Individuals from under-represented racial and ethnic groups
filled 27 percent of the available training slots.
The program is designed to prepare trainees to assume translational and multidisciplinary research
responsibilities in academic and other scientific organizations concerned with substance-use disorders (SUDs).
Pre-doctoral trainees concentrate in translational and interdisciplinary aspects of SUDs as part of a doctoral
program in a behavioral science discipline (e.g., psychology, sociology). Post-doctoral fellows have a
doctorate in a behavioral science discipline and are preparing for a research role in SUDs, or they are health
professionals seeking translational and interdisciplinary training in a behavioral orientation in SUDs research.
Basic elements of the program include: (1) training in the basic building blocks of research (e.g., experimental
design, data analysis) and independent research competence; (2) a translational and interdisciplinary
orientation taking students beyond their basic discipline and providing exposure to key theoretical concepts
and methodological issues of the related behavioral sciences along with a bio-behavioral conceptualization; (3)
professional development to support a career in SUDs research; (4) exploration of SUDs topics from a
medical-behavioral perspective through courses offered by training faculty; and (5) opportunities for research
around relevant questions in SUDs constituting a dissertation project for pre-doctoral trainees. The post-
doctoral program is individually tailored to the objectives of the fellows and builds on their previous knowledge
and experience, while drawing on these core elements. The need for a translational and interdisciplinary
program such as the one proposed is greater today than ever before and fills a unique niche in substance
abuse research.

This UCSF postdoctoral training program, entering its 24th year, develops substance use disorders (SUD)
treatment and services researchers. The training focuses on four areas: a) clinical trials of behavioral,
pharmacological and psychosocial interventions, in both practice-based and community settings; b) services
research, including organizational change, in health care systems; c) psychosocial and biological factors that
interact with treatments, including genetics and neuroimaging; and d) treatment and services research in
complex, comorbid populations. Trainees are admitted for two years with possibility of a third year. The
exceptional trainee may enter for a one-year training program. To date the program has successfully trained 60
doctoral level psychologists, physicians, public health, and policy professionals for academic and research
careers. The program's graduates have embarked on fruitful careers to improve SUD treatment through
scientific study. In the most recent funding cycle the program focused on linking with mental health disciplines,
conducted rigorous program evaluation, extended its emphasis on technology, and enhanced its strength in
HIV health care and prevention. During the next five years we focus on technology; evolving opportunities
through health care reform; health care for underserved populations such as youth and sexual and racial/ethnic
minorities; and SUD and HIV prevention and care. The program is based in an environment with outstanding
and highly relevant resources, including linkages with diverse clinical sites and a variety of academic centers
and activities that supplement the training experience. The program is led by the Director and 4 Site Directors,
an Executive Committee of Investigators, and has guidance from a Scientific and Training Advisory Committee.
Core faculty members have backgrounds including psychology, psychiatry, biostatistics, nursing, public health,
and epidemiology. These faculty have strong histories of mentorship, extensive experience in obtaining
extramural funding, and ongoing research productivity in SUD treatment and services research. New faculty
members have joined the program, bringing important lines of inquiry, research settings, and methods. The
result is a scientifically productive environment that allows trainees to draw on multiple perspectives in
designing and completing treatment and services research. The expectation is that program graduates will
conduct independent, methodologically rigorous and clinically relevant SUD treatment and services research,
contributing to the knowledge base in the field.

This proposal seeks continued support, via an institutional training grant, for a training program for pre and
postdoctoral fellows who will pursue research careers that focus on genetic influences on substance abuse.
The faculty, from the Institute for Behavioral Genetics (IBG) and collaborating units, is distinguished and active
in research, and IBG scientists have actively pursued studies of genetic influences on substance abuse for
over 50 years. Major substance abuse-related research projects are in progress in both human and animal
behavior genetics. The application of biometrical, statistical, and quantitative genetic techniques, together with
bioinformatics, genome-wide analyses and next generation sequencing, and epigenetics, is providing real
advances in knowledge. Neuro-chemical, -pharmacological, -physiological, and molecular genetic studies, are
providing an understanding of gene function related to behavior. Since our last application, we have added a
major commitment to functional and structural brain imaging as a research tool and have expanded our faculty
and training program accordingly. Our research and training include the use of large scale collaborative studies
that are amassing DNA repositories and rich phenotypic data sets available for studies of substance abuse.
These include the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study, for which our training faculty are
PIs of the twin study component, the NIDA Genetics Consortium, the Psychiatric Genetics Consortium, the UK
Biobank, and GSCAN, a genome wide study of over 1 million cases. IBG facilities are available for gene
function and expression studies, and behavioral, biochemical, and neurophysiological studies, and we are
actively pursuing animal model studies of the functional implications of SNPs robustly associated with drug
phenotypes in the human population. To reflect the expanded need for training, particularly for genetics
expertise applied in the context of ABCD, brain imaging, translational research, and `big data' studies, funds
are requested to support 6 pre-doctoral and 3 postdoctoral trainees. Trainees will typically be supported for up
to 3 years. Pre-doctoral trainees receive doctorate degrees from a cooperating academic unit and certification
in behavior genetics. Academic requirements in the training program include training in behavior genetics,
quantitative and biometrical genetics, theoretical and computer-based statistics, molecular genetics,
neuroscience, bioinformatics and genomics, mandatory training in the responsible conduct of research, and
courses on behavioral, brain imaging, and clinical phenotypes. Additional requirements vary according to the
degree granting academic unit. Research is an integral part of training. Postdoctoral trainees also pursue a
formalized program that emphasizes individual research as well as competence in molecular and quantitative
behavior genetics. Other activities in preparation for research careers in substance abuse include: supervision
of students and/or technicians, hosting of seminar speakers and conference organization, guest lecturing, a
weekly journal club, grant writing, and the development of individual professional plans.

Substance use disorders occur at the interface of behavior and pharmacology. This is a proposal to renew an
ongoing and successful postdoctoral clinical research training program on the human behavioral pharmacology
of substance abuse, for its 41st thru 45th years. Nine training positions are proposed, all at the postdoctoral
level. Training duration is two to three years. The goal is to produce experts in various aspects of substance
abuse, psychopharmacology, and treatment who go on to succeed as independent clinical researchers,
scientists, academicians, and administrators in drug abuse and related fields. The program has a long and
successful history, with many distinguished graduates. The program will provide training and experience in
translational experimental clinical trials research methods, extending from the human laboratory to the clinic.
Training consists primarily of conducting supervised clinical research in collaboration with training faculty and
analyzing and publishing the results, conclusions and implications of that research. Trainees attend and report
at major scientific meetings and participate in an organized program of educational seminars designed to
provide both breadth and depth to their knowledge and skills relevant to drug abuse and clinical research. The
training program site is a multifaceted drug abuse clinical research program -- the Behavioral Pharmacology
Research Unit -- plus other affiliated drug abuse treatment and research programs, primarily on the same
campus, but extending more broadly into the community as well. Research training is provided in the following
areas: clinical pharmacology of drugs of abuse; medications development research; the cognitive
neuroscience and behavioral toxicity of drugs of abuse; abuse liability assessment; pharmacological treatment
of drug abuse; behavioral treatment of drug abuse, especially incentive-based strategies; integration of
behavioral and pharmacological treatments; psychiatric and medical comorbidity; behavioral and
neuropsychiatric assessment; HIV risk behavior assessment; promotion of engagement and adherence; and
clinical trials research methods and trials management. Training includes a broad range of abused drug
classes – opioids, cocaine, prescription medications, cannabis, club drugs/psychedelics, alcohol,
tobacco/nicotine, and caffeine.

scientists with expertise in HIV and related co-morbidities among substance users. Our program builds upon
three joint doctoral programs in public health, clinical psychology and a new PhD in Interdisciplinary Research
on Substance Use offered in partnership between the University of California San Diego (UCSD) School of
Medicine and the San Diego State University (SDSU) Graduate Schools of Public Health and Social Work. Our
objectives are: 1) To provide opportunities for interdisciplinary research training experiences for pre-doctoral
students and postdoctoral fellows in epidemiology, health behavior and psychology who wish to focus on
prevention research at the intersection of substance use and HIV or other infectious diseases (e.g. viral
hepatitis, TB, STIs) or comorbidities; 2) To offer students hands-on experience in the study of HIV and related
comorbidities in international settings which bear the greatest burden of injection drug use, HIV and related
infections; 3) To recruit and train researchers from diverse academic backgrounds and under-represented
minority populations (URM) with the tools needed to become independent researchers with state-of-the-art
skills to address high priority challenges in HIV prevention research among substance users; and 4) To train
individuals in the responsible conduct of research with human subjects, especially in international and cross-
cultural settings. During the past 4 years, our program supported 31 trainees (12 predoctoral and 19
postdoctoral fellows; 12 (39%) were URM). Of completed trainees (8 predocs and 16 postdocs), all but 1
predoc and 1 postdoc are still active in the field. Time to matriculation for predocs averaged 4.1 years. Three
completed predocs are Assistant Professors, 2 are postdocs funded by other NIDA T32s, and two are in
applied positions that include research. Seven K01s were newly awarded to postdocs with 3 more pending
NGAs; half of these were URM. Our 31 predocs and postdocs published 82 and 141 manuscripts, respectively,
almost half of which were first authored. We request support for 4 predoctoral and 4 postdoctoral trainees,
who will be mentored from a pool of 25 Preceptors. Depending on their level of training, mentees complete
courses in substance use and infectious diseases, instruction in responsible conduct of research, quarterly
cultural sensitivity training workshops, seminars on scientific rigor, presentations on 'Work In Progress', and
new seminars (e.g., Writing Circle). Our active research projects in nearby Mexico (6 R01s) and several other
international settings offer the opportunity for unique, hands-on international training experiences and a robust
infrastructure for trainees to develop into independent investigators.

This renewal application requests continued support for the Postdoctoral Research Training Program in
Substance Abuse Prevention at Yale University. The host site for the program will continue to be the Division
of Prevention and Community Research in the Yale Department of Psychiatry, along with two primary partner
sites in Psychiatry: the Division of Addictions and the Yale Stress Center. In addition, the program will continue
to draw on faculty in three other Yale sites: Women's Health Research at Yale, the Yale School of Public
Health, and the Yale Child Study Center. Faculty have a strong track record of scholarship in substance abuse
prevention and longstanding collaborations as researchers and mentors. This application builds on the success
of our current training program originally funded by NIDA in 2005 and renewed in 2010 and 2015. Our request
for renewal funding is based on the continuing demand for advanced training in rigorous, interdisciplinary,
community-based translational research focused on substance abuse prevention. The program trains six
postdoctoral fellows across two years: 1) to understand drug abuse and addiction and related behaviors within
an ecological framework that emphasizes relevant developmental, family, social, cultural, and neurobiological
contexts; 2) to enhance knowledge in pre-intervention, implementation, and dissemination research; 3) to learn
state-of-the-art data analytic methods that incorporate rigorous field and laboratory research methods,
including mixed method designs; 4) to gain experience in interdisciplinary research through collaborations with
scientists working in interdisciplinary teams across departments, centers, and programs; and 5) to increase
knowledge about the translation of research into real-world contexts in order to impact prevention practice and
policy, and ultimately, public health. These program objectives are reinforced in mentored relationships with
two scientific advisors, didactic seminars, and individually-tailored experiences based on each fellow’s
Individual Development Plan. The training aligns with NIDA research objectives and cross-cutting priorities.
Over the past 14 years, the program has enrolled 38 fellows, who have virtually gone on to careers as
prevention scientists. More than three-quarters are faculty in academic settings, and others are employed as
prevention scientists in interdisciplinary research organizations. The program has also been successful in
training fellows from diverse backgrounds; 26% identify as an underrepresented racial/ethnic minority and 13%
identify as other racial/ethnic minorities.

The overall purpose of this training grant is to provide postdoctoral training to young basic
scientists and physicians in the area of neurobiology of substance abuse, with a focus on the
mode of action of psychostimulant and opiate drugs at the genetic, molecular, circuit and
behavioral levels. Our objective is to provide an exciting and innovative environment with world
class facilities and faculty to develop the next generation of scientists working in drug abuse.
Training will take place in the multidisciplinary setting at the University of Michigan. The faculty
members are all NIDA grantees (or co-Investigators) and have expertise in the neurobiology of
substance abuse, with particular emphasis on the area of opioid and psychostimulant drugs.
The focus of the proposal is the training of postdoctoral fellows in state-of-the-art approaches for
studying mechanisms underlying abuse of psychoactive drugs. This includes studying the
genetic, developmental and environmental factors that lead to vulnerability to substance abuse;
the mode of action of drugs of abuse at the molecular, cellular, anatomical and behavioral
levels; and the long-term consequences of psychoactive drugs on the brain, as mediated
through mechanisms of neural plasticity; and the development of medications, and prevention
strategies. The working assumption is that the functional and structural brain remodeling
associated with chronic drug use lies at the basis of tolerance, sensitization, physical
dependence, and psychological addiction to these drugs. The drug abuse research community
at the University of Michigan is of high quality and has a long history in the field. Beyond their
individual strengths, the training faculty members have long-standing collaborative scientific and
training relationships with each other. These historical strengths have recently been further
enhanced with a number of initiatives at the University of Michigan, designed to facilitate life
science research in general, and neuroscience research in particular. They include state-of-the-
art tools for mouse and rat genetics, genomics, proteomics, and informatics. Thus, our
postdoctoral fellows will profit from a highly sophisticated, yet supportive, research and training
environment.

The Drugs of Abuse Training Program prepares predoctoral students and postdoctoral fellows for
successful independent careers in the field of substance abuse research. This program has been the
cornerstone of interdisciplinary basic science training in addiction, drugs of abuse, and HIV/AIDS at
Temple University since 1988. This application is requesting continuation of the program at the current
level of support, 6 predoctoral students and 4 postdoctoral fellows. The Drugs of Abuse Training
Program is administered through the Center for Substance Abuse Research (CSAR) at the Lewis Katz
School of Medicine. CSAR brings together faculty from multiple disciplines who share a common
interest in researching topics related to the neurobiology of addiction, pharmacology of drugs of abuse,
and the intersection of drugs of abuse with immune function including HIV/AIDS. This common goal
creates a rich, highly collaborative environment for trainees who’s research often extends beyond a
single laboratory. The Drugs of Abuse Training Program is supported by a cadre of dedicated faculty
mentors who are devoted to the education and training of the next generation of scientists. These
faculty are highly successful researchers as evidenced by their excellent extramural research funding
and strong publication records. The program provides rigorous training in scientific methods,
experiment design, data analysis, and research ethics. It includes didactic instruction through a set of
core courses and seminars focusing on the pharmacology of drugs of abuse, neurobiology of addiction,
and neuroimmunology. Excellence in scientific communication is achieved through coursework and
practical opportunities for written and oral presentations. Participation in seminars, meetings with
visiting scientists, journal club, scientific retreats, annual self-assessments and faculty evaluations of
progress results in trainees who are exceedingly well-prepared for the next step in their scientific
careers. The program promotes the highest level of scientific integrity and ethics, along with personal
and public accountability in the conduct of science. The Drugs of Abuse Training Program at Temple
University has been effective in recruiting outstanding trainees including individuals from diverse
backgrounds and has a near perfect record of retention. Trainees complete the program with excellent
credentials and go on to successful careers in academia, industry, government and other science-

This program for pre- and post-doctoral training supports the training of specialists who are able to conduct
preclinical research at levels ranging from the molecular to the cognitive/clinical on the biological mechanisms
underlying the development, maintenance, and elimination of drug-seeking behavior. Twenty-three members of
the graduate faculty of the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) serve as preceptors for postdoctoral
research fellows and for Ph.D. students matriculating into basic science graduate programs in behavioral
neuroscience, neuroscience, physiology and pharmacology, or biochemistry. Major research areas represent
four levels. Some faculty members work primarily at the cellular/molecular level, using molecular biological, cell
biological, and electron microscopic techniques. Other faculty work principally at the level of physiological,
biochemical and pharmacological systems, using receptor binding, autoradiography, in vivo microdialysis and
voltammetry, and electrophysiological techniques, and some work primarily in behavioral pharmacology and
pharmacogenetics, using behavioral testing, intravenous drug self-administration, quantitative genetics and
genetic mapping, as well as computer modelling techniques. Finally, some faculty work with human subjects,
using cognitive testing and a variety of imaging techniques. Areas of extensive existing faculty collaboration
include: studies of dopaminergic systems, ranging from molecular biology to behavior; extensive studies of
genetic determinants of drug responses, at all levels from molecular to statistical gene mapping; and the study
of learned and unlearned determinants of responses to drugs, particularly their rewarding effects and drug self-
administration. Sensitivity, tolerance, and dependence/withdrawal phenomena for all major classes of drugs of
abuse are under active investigation. Training includes firm curricular grounding in the basic sciences, specific
pharmacological training in abused drugs, and extensive and continuous participation in research. Trainees
also receive extensive instruction in the responsible conduct of research through interactive seminars that
cover ethical considerations in all aspects of science. OHSU and this training program have put considerable
efforts into recruiting and retaining trainees from diverse backgrounds. These efforts have resulted in a
significantly more diverse pool of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows receiving training in the biological
basis of drug-seeking behavior.

the United States alone costs related to loss of work, crime, and health care exceed $700 billion a
year. The field of addiction spans numerous disciplines including, but not limited to, medicine,
psychiatry, neurobiology, pharmacology, public health, and law, illustrating the impact that drugs of
abuse and addiction have on the human condition. We are currently experiencing an amazing growth
of technologies yielding new insights into the biological effects of drugs of abuse and mechanisms for
the development of dependence and addiction. At UC Irvine, the community of faculty and
researchers studying the neurobiology of addiction is rapidly growing with support from the UC Irvine
Center for Addiction Neuroscience (ICAN), a new NIDA P50 Center of Excellence called the Impact of
Cannabinoids Across Lifespan (ICAL), and a new center focused on the medical and legislative
challenges of legalized marijuana (Center for the Study of Cannabis). The goal of the proposed
Training Program in Substance Use and Use Disorders is to train the next generation of innovative
researchers in the field of addiction neuroscience by leveraging the exceptional strength in
neuroscience at UCI, and the new centers focused on addiction research, to provide an educational
and research experience that will position trainees as new leaders in the field. The training program is
focused on predoctoral students and will provide the following: 1) a modern and interdisciplinary
neurobiology of addiction course; 2) two courses related to cannabinoids and the endocannabinoid
system that dovetail with the P50 ICAL research endeavors; 3) an annual addiction neuroscience
symposium; 4) a training program annual retreat; 5) a scientific writing course; 6) a public speaking
course provided by Activate to Captivate; 7) an addiction research seminar series; 8) a journal club; 9)
instruction in methods for enhancing reproducibility; and 10) conference presentations. This will be the
first training program on campus that is specifically focused on drugs of abuse and addiction.
Together, the new centers focused on addiction bring together scientists and clinicians from over a
dozen departments and four schools to address the grand challenges in this field, to train and educate
the next generation of investigators and clinicians, and to disseminate important information to the
public.
