Can our observations of a theme be critical, or are you focusing on positive attributes of Virginia for this project?Yes, your observation can be critical. Not all of history is happy, a lot of it is really awful and heartbreaking and we need to acknowledge that.

Can you submit more than 1 entry?You may submit up to 3 quilts.

Do I have to be a current resident to participate?You do not need to be a resident of Virginia. We ask that you be residing in the United States, dealing with international shipping is a lot of work.

How will quilts be selected? Is it based on a rubric or traditional judging standards?Quilts will be selected by the advisory committee for Stitching Together History. The judging will use a rubric and will consider the topic of the quilt along with the quality of the craftsmanship and artistry of the quilt.

How will these be displayed?The quilts will be display at the Virginia Quilt Museum from July 4, 2026 through December 22, 2026. They will be displayed across the first and second floor of the museum and will be hung on the walls.

My question is being I am a beginner will I still be able to be part of this? We encourage beginner quilters to take part in this project!

If what I make is accepted, does it become part of the museum's collection?No. We simply do not have the space and resources to permanently care for all 250 quilts that will be part of the exhibition. We hope to keep a few quilts as part of the collection to represent this project but we haven't figure out how we will select those quilts yet. Also, if you want your quilt back after the exhibition that is completely fine! You'll be given the option to have your quilt be up for consideration in the collection.

Is the entry to be traditional form of 3 layers: top, batting, backing and quilted?We are using SAQA's definition of an art quilt: “a creative visual work that is layered and stitched or that references this form of stitched layered structure.”

Is working with silk allowed?Yes, you may work with silk. We ask that you avoid using anything that is too fragile, this quilts will be on display for at least six month along with being photographed and stored before the exhibition.

Would a raw edged fused collage, quilted, and traditional binding be acceptable for this challenge?This sounds perfect! Use the techniques that you like best.

Does the $40 entry fee cover each entry or 1-3 entries?The $40 entry fee covers up to 3 pieces. You can submit one, two, or three the choice is yours!

Is it okay to submit a quilt with the same theme someone else is doing?Yes, with a project this large there will undoubtedly be some duplicate entries. My best advice is to make a quilt that represents a topic you connect with. You can share what topic you are working on here and see a list of what others are working on here.

May 2 people collaborate on a single quilt?Yes, collaborations are welcome! We especially encourage cross generational collaborations, get your kids and grandkids involved!

Are each of the webinars going to be recorded and available for viewing later?All webinars will be recorded and put on VQM's YouTube channel.

Can we use purchased patches in the theme of the quilt?Purchased patches would be fine as long as they don't have swear words or glitter.

What years to include in your quilt for the historical events or historical persons that occurred in the land that would become West Virginia?We are including all of West Virginia history in this project! So from the beginning of time to current day for both Virginia and West Virginia.

Will you accept quilts with themes related to LGBT+ history?Yes! We want this project to be as inclusive as possible.

Will you post the future webinar dates on the website?Yes! We are hoping to have all future webinars scheduled by early January. Our Facebook and Instagram pages are great ways to stay in touch with the museum and this project.

Curious Why 2024 submission yet exhibit not until 2026We are hoping to publish a book to go with the exhibition, so we need 2025 to write and edit the book and photograph the quilts in order to have the book published by the 2026 exhibition. The exhibition is set to open on July 4, 2026 the 250th Anniversary of the Signing of the Decleration of Independence.

Hi, Can you please let me know if a "humorous" quilt would be appropriate for this exhibition? I'm thinking of representing "the mixing bowl" which is a confluence of major roadways near Alexandria as an actual kitchen mixing bowl. Thanks for advice/guidance. - Gay BitterA humours quilt would be great, especially about this topic!

Yes! As long as it's the correct size and is about Virginia or West Virginia.

I have a couple ideas that may need an explanation as to why it is part of Virginia history. Does that need to be explained somewhere in the quilt?You can explain that in the questions asked during the entry submission, it doesn't need to be addressed on the quilt itself.

Having checked out the application process on CaFE, it looks like I can't actually apply (indicate my intention) until I have the item completed and photographed. Is that correct?Yes - you should apply once youre quilts are completed.

Is it advisable to include labels of the things featured on the front of the quilt as part of the design? That's completely up to you. You don't need to but if it works with your design you can.

If my quilt turns out to be 20.5" square instead of 20" will it be disqualified? Thank you!No, please try and keep it as close to 20" as possible but nothing in quilting is exact.

I submitted 2 entries but I couldn't avoid paying $80 ($40 for each). The form doesn't allow to complete checkout and submit one of the entries without check-marking the fee. Will I get a refund of the extra 40?Yes - sorry about that. The codes to receive the discounts are Entry2 and Entry3.

I have 3 quilts to enter. The form on CaFE appears to only allow 1. How do I proceed?Each quilt needs it's own entry. Use the codes Entry2 and Entry3 to only have to pay the entry fee once.

I already submitted my idea for Appomattox court house, 1865, but see it listed in the “ideas” list. It is a duplicate of what I’ve already made…We're going to end up with some duplicate ideas and that's okay! Even if they are the same idea they will be different quilts and may have different things to say about the same idea.
