12005The Scottish Biodiversity List is a list of animals, plants and habitats that Scottish Ministers consider to be of principal importance for biodiversity conservation in Scotland. The development of the list has been a collaborative effort involving a great many species experts. Completion of the list is the first time such a stocktake has been done in Scotland.

The Scottish Biodiversity List is a tool to help public bodies carry out their Biodiversity Duty. Scottish Ministers first published the List in 2005 to meet the requirements of Section 2(4) of The Nature Conservation (Scotland) Act 2004.

For a description of the original selection criteria and how the list was created see the Scottish Biodiversity Forum's website:

4
1.12007The Scottish Biodiversity List was up-dated to take account of the revision to the United Kingdom Biodiversity Action Plan (UK BAP) list in 2007.

15 terrestrial species and 4 marine species were removed from the Scottish Biodiversity List because they no longer qualified under Criterion 1, species and habitats listed on the UK BAP list, (see Table 1 below).

New habitats and species have been added to the Scottish Biodiversity List as a result of the revision to the UKBAP list.
· 8 new terrestrial and freshwater priority habitats (plus 2 that have expanded their scope)
· 167 terrestrial and freshwater priority species
· 38 marine priority species and 9 marine priority habitats
(See Table 2 below for details)
5
1.22009The classification system used for habitats has been changed from the National Vegetation Classification (NVC) to UK BAP priority habitats to make the Scottish Biodiversity List easier to use and interpret for a wider audience.
6
1.32009The standard code from the National Biodiversity Network (NBN) database - the ‘taxon version key’ - has been included to facilitate matching to NBN lists. The scientific names on the list have also been updated in accordance to the current names recommended by the NBN
7
1.42012The Scottish Biodiversity List has been categorised to make it easier to understand and work with. The categories for action relate to the different types of activities that public bodies carry out to deliver their Biodiversity Duty. They can be used by public bodies to identify actions towards meeting their biodiversity duty and are also relevant to anyone involved in land management, development or nature conservation.

Additional information about level of threat and legal protection and has been included to explain the categories for action in more detail.
· Threat level – based on IUCN Red Data Lists and OSPAR Convention
· Legal protection – under Habitats Directive and Wildlife and Countryside Act

The categories are explain on the Scottish Biodiversity Forum's website.
