Does your site collect any info on dataset downloads for educational use? optional: qualify with a statement

we collect proposed use, but voluntarily, starting in 2014 (based on NSF requirement for unfettered access to data). However, it is from an easy pick-list, so it is probably fairly accurate. The choices for educational use are ‘Student/Class” or “Educator”. From 2002-2014, we had a form that was required to be filled out in order to download data (based on NSF requirement for data download reporting). Before 2002, proposed use was collected more free-form, but we have interpreted this information so that we can somewhat accurately assess data download use. We can report on either databases or specific entities that are being downloaded. Our most downloaded databases overall (not only education use) are climate (MS001), hydrology (HF004) and vegetation (TV010).

At BNZ we do not specifically track any downloads from our site and we also submit our data to other places don't track downloads but we do offer an online service to download data from our near-real-time sensor network and to access that system people do need to tell us their intended use and most users are doing graduate, undergraduate or agency research and have not indicated any K12 uses.

We require users to fill in an intended use before downloading data from our local system. The only education use option we provide is "Education (K12)". The majority of users accessing our data are local account holders, which automatically gets assigned a "Local Use" for this field, or select "Academic Research". Education (K12) continues to be a very rarely selected category for intended data use.

At user registration, we ask for some information on the user, so we know the primary purpose for at least the first data access. CDR data acquired from other data repositories do not collect this sort of information.

We do ask people to volunteer information about affiliation/data use for downloads from our catalog and have tracked the information in a database since 2002. However, downloads through the old LNO Metacat and current downloads of data sets deposited at EDI are not tracked, so we only get that information on 10-20% of downloads now.

Daily rainfall and discharge are annually downloaded for our Schoolyard data Jams. Other than that, they have their own plot to gather different kind of soil, and water quality data.

we’d certainly be interested in this. I don’t know if we have ever done this (prior to my time), but I think we are not tracking now because we are a DEIMS site and I am not aware of a mechanism to do this in DEIMS. I don’t think EDI does this either, correct? Seems like something that could be integrated in EDI, but I am also aware of some history in the LTER about tracking downloads that complicate these matters.

[for data, see tab]. MCR LTER does find this information useful and we have used it in past reports. Of course this is ONLY for downloads from our local site catalog, not when users to to the LTER Network Catalog, which some people recently began calling "EDI".

We don’t count downloads by reason any more, but from earlier downloads I know that about one third of the downloads were called ‘Educational’I also know that several UW classes use the data for a project.

The exception has been within approximately the last 3 years where PAL LTER hired a new education and outreach coordinator who utilizes our local catalog for a number of various education activities within classrooms and other events. We now have much higher numbers for this category. The top ranking datasets are for various Adelie Penguin measurements and station weather data. Then numbers even out among various other datasets.

Our local catalog asks downloaders for an email address and to state their use ("Education K12" is one of the choices; undergrad education is not). It would take me a little while to assemble the data, so I'll put that off until there is a more specific request. However, my general impression is that the most often downloaded datasets for K12-use (and UG, anecdotal) are the kelp forest community time-series. We know that SBC datasets are exposed thru other catalogs, too (EDI, DataONE, LTER), and as far as I know, those catalogs do not keep track of what users do with the data.
