A New Deal for Public Art in the Free State
A film that explores Kansas identity during the Great Depression and New Deal era through stories about conflicts over public art. Between 1934 and 1943, the U.S. Treasury Department commissioned over 1,600 pieces of public art for newly constructed post office buildings across the United States. In the state of Kansas, twenty-nine of these murals and other artworks were installed in twenty-six post offices, as a part of this New Deal arts program. For eight decades, thousands of Kansans have walked past these public works of art - sometimes in appreciation, sometimes with a nod of familiarity, sometimes without even registering their existence. What can these murals tell about Kansas during the Great Depression era, and how do they continue to speak to Kansans today? The “Section” New Deal arts project was tasked with making art publicly accessible to all Americans - a kind of democratization of art. Post office artists were directed to create works in the “American Scene” style, with emphasis on the local history, culture, and economy of the communities in which the art was placed. Communities were often consulted by artists about the artwork subject matter, and in some cases, competitions were held where community members were given direct input into choosing a mural subject. Of course, these interactions between artists, the federal government, and local communities did not always run smoothly. Conflicts over Kansas post office murals present a series of historical snapshots that help illuminate American, regional, and Kansas identity during the 1930s and early 1940s. This film explores Kansas history and identity during the Great Depression and New Deal era through the stories of the post office murals of Kansas. What subject matters did Kansans feel represented their communities? How did local communities in Kansas react to and interact with these artworks when they were first installed? Whose voices are represented by these artworks and whose voices are missing? What was the importance of the artist in this process? And what do these artworks say about Kansans’ identities both in the past and in contemporary times?

Connecting...
Johanna and Paul are a wantless and wealthy couple living an apparently perfect and happy life in their luxury „smart-home“. While Johanna is putting the pastry in the oven, Paul opens the garage using his cell-phone, where he can see Johanna on the security cameras. She seems happy. But underneath the surface, Johanna is missing something. In a historical re-enactment, she fights in the peasant uprisings of 1525 for justice, for passion, for „the real thing“ – for all those long-lost values, virtues and desires that seem buried in our smooth and sterile digital lives. After totally losing it during one show, Johanna has to make a decision about how she wants to live her life...

The necklace
Mathilde Loisel is “pretty and charming” but feels she has been born into a family of unfavorable economic status. She was married off to a lowly clerk in the Ministry of Education, who can afford to provide her only with a modest though not uncomfortable lifestyle. Mathilde feels the burden of her poverty intensely. She regrets her lot in life and spends endless hours imagining a more extravagant existence. While her husband expresses his pleasure at the small, modest supper she has prepared for him, she dreams of an elaborate feast served on fancy china and eaten in the company of wealthy friends. She possesses no fancy jewels or clothing, yet these are the only things she lives for. Without them, she feels she is not desirable. She has one wealthy friend, Madame Forestier, but refuses to visit her because of the heartbreak it brings her. One night, her husband returns home proudly bearing an invitation to a formal party hosted by the Ministry of Education. He hopes that Mathilde will be thrilled with the chance to attend an event of this sort, but she is instantly angry and begins to cry. Through her tears, she tells him that she has nothing to wear and he ought to give the invitation to one of his friends whose wife can afford better clothing. Her husband is upset by her reaction and asks how much a suitable dress would cost. She thinks about it carefully and tells him that 400 francs would be enough. Her husband quietly balks at the sum but agrees that she may have the money.

The Sparrow
Music Video - The Sparrow tells the story of death, but also the beauty of life. The Three Graces from Greek mythology represents youth/beauty, mirth and elegance. These elements are present in the music video. The choreographer Laura Pietiläinen describes that the dance is more like energy going through them. The Graces are not human and the things they represent are pure energy. They are sources of those energies and that is the feeling we try to create with our dance. Our Artist John Westmoreland tells the story of the world where beautiful things are disappearing from our world, but he hopes these things can come back. The Sparrow represents hope, because it has wings that are broken but can be healed. There is a possibility that the sparrow will be able to fly again. John Westmoreland is born and raised in North Carolina, United States, but because of the Artist's background, who has grandparents from Finland, we added Finnish mythology to the film. In the end of the music video our Artist takes the Three Graces to the river of death, but he leaves them on a stone in the river and gives them wings so they could have the possibility to return when their wings are healed.

The Spirit Seam
The Spirit Seam is a short animated film about a little girl, Pollywog, and her Pap-Paw. Located in an Appalachain coal-mining town in the 1950s, the film takes the audience through the daily life of both characters. At the start of the film, the characters eat breakfast together and then travel to their respective locations- Pollywog is dropped off at school, and Pap-Paw clocks into work at the Hiraethsburg coal mine. Throughout the film they experience the simple pleasures of rural Appalachian life: catching fireflies, fishing, catching frogs, and birthdays. Pap-Paw and Pollywog's bond is incredibly strong. In fact, they are inseparable until illness threatens to fracture their small family. This film is an homage to Gerst's maternal side and their origins working in Southwestern Pennsylvania. It is a piece rooted not only in family roots and origin, but in grief over the loss of family members as well. The Spirit Seam combines a mixture of animation mediums. The characters have been 3D modeled and animated in Audodesk Maya while the elemental effects are created in the 2D Animation software Toonboom Harmony. The sets are created physically, and are created in a variety of ways: 3D printing, embroidery, felted yarn, and sculptural techniques.
