The next sheet contains estimates for all deaths from natural disasters worldwide, since 1900 to 2017, expressed as annual number of deaths and annual deaths per million people, both for single years and as averages for decades.These charts show data from the other sheets in this workbook.

Data source summary

Gapminder has copied data from EM-DAT (http://www.emdat.be/) with estimates of the number of deaths from natural disasters for all countries since 1900. These estimates include the following disaster types (as described here http://www.emdat.be/classification): Animal accident, Complex Disasters, Drought, Earthquake, Epidemic, Extreme temperature, Flood, Fog, Impact, Insect infestation, Landslide, Mass movement (dry), Storm, Volcanic activity, Wildfire
Gapminder summed all death tolls from these types of disasters for all countries to a world total per year. To create the per capita version of this, we divided the numbers by the world population of that year in the middle of the period, based on Gapminder Population v5.
As disasters don't strike at an equal amount every year, the annual chart looks very uneven. To see the big picture more clearly, we calculated the average disaster deaths per decade, both in terms of death toll and death rate per million people. You can follow these calculations from the sheet to the right to the output in the sheet called Data world decade.
