Discusses the first time he saw marionettes at an LA department store with his father as a child; faciation with lights and color; incorporated in uncle's production companys prologue as a dancer @ 6; Uncle helped him build a stage; bought first puppet in 1932 @ 7; worked for Disney, got puppet lessons from Henri Gordon demontrating puppets at Bullocks Wilshire (ex-professional puppeteer) she gave BB lessons Monday - Saturday; did first show for Marvyn LeRoy @ 8; discusses parents who seemed supportive; father worked in construction and then for Goodyear; mother was a legal secretary and said was very creative and should have been an interior decorator and helped with his color sense; worked in camoflague battalion @ 15-16 with other industry people; made puppets for radio city music hall and "toys in technicolor"; worked with John ("Pop") Thompson Shannon; H. Bruce Humberstone; discharged after getting fever from some of the feathers they were using in camo unit; Uncle introduced him to George Pal Studios who hired him '42/'43; Herb Price, Felix Selenca (sp?) and Pal trained Baker to animate; Wah Chang; Federal Theater; Connie Pernard (worked for Bob and painted all the heads for Disney puppets); Max Morgan (cameraman for Disney); Herb Price; John Abbot; Bill King; did films for the Navy at Pal Studios; "John Henry and the Inky-poo" (1946); "Rhythm in the Ranks" (1941); did films for Shell Oil Co; did something for Paramount that was "Romeow and Julicat" (Shown in the film "Variety Girl"); strikes at Pals and Disney - Baker left because he didn't want to go on strike against Pal; after leaving Pal Baker decided he wanted to go into business making puppets on his own; Baker claims he craved the Tom Thumb Pal used; Jasper series; Cinemascope; Puppetoons; worked on Pal's "Tulips Shall Grow", "The Sky Princess", "Mr. Strauss Takes a Walk" (1942); either "Goodnight Rusty" or "Two-Gun Rusty" - whichever involved a cigar; "The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins"; series for Dr. Seuss; "And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street"; Blanding painted sets; Paramount distributed all of these and footed bill; Dick Le Grand; Phil Kellison; Puppetoons; discussed multiple pane animation and Technicolor and mentioned Kalmus' (aka Herbert and Natalie Kalmus); "Rhythm in the Ranks" wins an Oscar; animation techniques = registration lines on glass or foot pins; discusses how Jasper puppet was supposed to be donated to USC; worked for Pal up until "Destination Moon" even after he had his own shop on Santa Monica - may of the people from Pal came to work for Baker = Connie Pernard, Evelyn Wylie, Charles "Chris" Christadoro, James "Blanding" Sloan; making sets for Pal while he had his shop; worled with Josh Meador (sp?/not sure if this is the same person), Charlie Pazance (sp?), Sylvia Holland, Bennett Bradbury at Disney; did window puppets for Disney; Dali collaborated with Disney = "Destino" (1945/2003); Bob Jones had a puppet theater on Olvera Street and Catalina Island = Bob Jones built the first Pinocchio puppet; someone was helping Dave Smith at the Disney archive; BB did early commericals - mentions a wine commerical; made "Close Encounters" alien puppet for Spielberg - did various versions of the puppet and used string. Demo with small Pinocchio puppet, but seems like the large ones are being produced. If some of the puppets could be identified by puppeteers that would be of help.
