This COMTRADE Calculator creates transient files for the purpose of testing the performance of distance relays during conditions when the system frequency and are varying. there are test cases prescribed by Working Group D22.The files are saved in COMTRADE format and can be imported into any relay test system that accept this file format.

Instructions for Use:

For typical use, simply select the relay characteristic type, enter or change the settings and nominal values in the light yellow colored cells. You may opt to check or uncheck the box "Keep Z test point constant with V ramp"; checking it will ramp the current when the voltage ramps, otherwise current will remain constant. Select the test case from the dropdown box, and click on the Create COMTRADE File button. It will then prompt you to save the file.

Select another test case, click the button and save the new file.

Custom test cases can be done. Some of the cells are color coded to guide you in making changes and to understand the behavior of the tool when these changes are made. Note that changes that you have made in light geen boxes will be replaced with default values if the test case is other than "Custom" when you check on uncheck the "Keep Z test point constant" checkbox.

Light YellowThese are cells that you would normally change, and they include relay setting parameters

Light Olive GreenThese are the suggested filenames and test description that change when you select a PSRC WG D22 test case. You can change them for a particular test case but they will change again when the test case selection is changed.

Light GreenThese cells are automatically changed when a new test case is selected. You can change them for a particular case and create the COMTRADE file. Be aware that selecting another case will again change them to new values according to the new selection.

RedThese are default values that are used in some light green cells with similar names.

GrayThese cells contain formulas and are locked and cannot be changed unless sheet protection is turned off.

Note about MS Excel security restrictions:

This tool contains macros and may not run depending on the security settings that have been set in MS Excel. This tool can be used in MS Excel versions 2000 through 2010. The procedure of allowing macros to run in Excel is different from one version to another. Consult the Excel help file for the procedure to allow macros to run.
