DEFINITION

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a virus that is transmitted through sex, blood transfer, or from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding. It targets immune cells that help the body respond to infection, which gradually results in AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome).
