About the IAO
7
Founded in September 2012 in Los Angeles, The Institute for Art and Olfaction is a 501(c)3 non-profit devoted to advancing public, artistic, and experimental engagement with scent. We do this by initiating and supporting experimental projects that utilize the medium of scent, by providing accessible and affordable education in our laboratory as well as in partnership with institutions and community groups, and by celebrating excellence in independent, artisan, and experimental perfumery through our yearly award mechanism, The Art and Olfaction Awards. Through these efforts, we extend the world of scent beyond its traditional boundaries of appreciation and use.

Our Philosophy
10
We believe there is no one right or wrong way to work with scent. As such, we try to present a variety of philosophies and methodologies, and keep an open mind about the many clever ways people can wield a pipette.

About the Perfume Design Challenge
13
The Perfume Design Challenge was inspired by the charrette. The charrette ("cart" in French) was developed by the École des Beaux-Arts, where architecture students were given a design problem to solve in a short amount of time. Their architectural drawings were collected on a rolling cart to be transported from the studio to the school for student presentations of their designs. The term charrette has developed to refer to short term intense creative brainstorming and design, in respond to a specific problem, that is then presented to others for feedback.
14
The IAO Perfume Design Challenge is a timed design challenge, intended to jumpstart a creative process and teach students quick design problem-solving with a limited olfactory palette.
Participants will be given a design inspiration or challenge, a set of themed scent materials, and over an hour to create a scent that responds to the challenge.
At the deadline, participants will present their fragrance and design process to the group. The completed scents, formulas, and design inspiration will be on display at the IAO for the weeks following each session.
15
The program is intended to allow participants to learn how to respond to design briefs of all varieties, while experimenting with aromatic materials and creative briefs.
