Highlights and Notes
2
1972-09-03 Folsom Field (University Of Colorado) Boulder, CO((DP36 Filler)) ((Dave's Picks 2023 bonus disc))whole 1st set (albeit AUD only), esp Tennessee Jed, Bird Song, and Playin' in the Band; whole 2nd set, incl weir's tina turner impression and thee all-timer China Cat>Rider!!! and The Other One!!!; set three is a fun bonus w/ shades of raggedy primal Dead, incl. a rare Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Blues
3
1972-09-09 Hollywood Palladium Hollywood, CA
a huge Keith show - Johnny B Goode midshow is absolute killer! and everything onwards is fire, esp: China Cat>Rider, Truckin' is all pinch harmonics and gusto (note the very waltzy transition into a worthy 35-minute The Other One!), (apparently Phil left the building right after One More Saturday Night, despite the band still being onstage ready to play more, lol)
4
1972-09-10 Hollywood Palladium Hollywood, CAace Bertha opener followed by interminable tuning breaks
5
1972-09-15 Boston Music Hall Boston, MAEnjoying the Ride box setthe show pauses two songs in to "retune the monitors so we can sing for you," announces bobby; Greatest Story Ever Told! (this is the era for it), Friend of the Devil, Playing in the Band!, Casey Jones; Truckin'>Other One (growing, becoming monstrous)
6
1972-09-16 Boston Music Hall Boston, MAEnjoying the Ride box setlol @ the folks talking all over Stella Blue on the AUD tape, (note the early, slower take on Big River); Greatest Story Ever Told, the crowd goes nuts for Dark Star>Brokedown Palace (the only such pairing, the latter being an A+ flawless version)
7
1972-09-17 Baltimore Civic Center Baltimore, MDDick's Picks 23arguably the whole show, but especially Tennessee Jed thru MaMU
8
1972-09-19 Roosevelt Stadium Jersey City, NJ((Dave's Picks 2023 bonus disc))
only patchy AUD sources circulate, which is a pity because it's a rager!! - jerry puts his ass into this Bertha opener! and the subsequent Greatest Story Ever Told is an all-timer!, Bird Song, MaMU, even bathroom numbers like Black Throated Wind and Sugaree have extra stank on em, but beware the literal fireworks on Mississippi Halfstep; dig the NJ heads singing along to Deal (a relatively new solo album cut),
9
1972-09-21 The Spectrum Philadelphia, PADick's Picks 36
Bird Song, China Cat>Rider (albeit not an all-timer like dick latvala insists), BTW, Big River, Loser, Cumberland Blues, Playin' in the Band!; He's Gone>Truckin'!, Mexicali, a garage rock Friend of the Devil! and an all-timer NFA!!>Goin' Down the Road!!>NFA! (Dark Star>Morning Dew is a classic, but not really a fave of mine - best parts are minutes 18-23 for the sorta Elastic Jam and 33-38 for the Mind Left/Feelin' Groovy jam)
10
1972-09-23 The Palace Theater Waterbury, CT[a dick latvala China Cat>Rider pick - yet it's incomplete on SBD...]; whole 2nd set, save for the garbled It's All Over Now Baby Blue that precedes the final (also garbled) Cryptical Envelopment (until 1985) into the Other One w/ Elastic Jam,
11
1972-09-24 The Palace Theater Waterbury, CT30 Trips box setBig Railroad Blues, Cumberland Blues, Tennessee Jed (incomplete on SBD tapes), Playing in the Band!; Dark Star (at least post-verse, when things get wacky) into China Cat>Rider?! (first such transition since 68-69!) (note also the premiere of Tomorrow is Forever)
12
1972-09-26 Stanley Theater Jersey City, NJkinda sloppy for a while until Cumberland Land goes interestingly askew; The Other One sequence is an obvious winner (jazzy 73 months ahead of schedule)
13
1972-09-27 Stanley Theater Jersey City, NJDick's Picks 11i never could get too excited about this show, which is undeniably strong - Brokedown Palace made me cry though! (this is also that brief era where weir somehow forgot how to play the china cat sunflower riff)
14
1972-09-28 Stanley Theater Jersey City, NJMexicali, surprise Don't Ease Me In, Big River (it's one of those China Cats where weir cannot hit the high note cleanly, over and over and over)
15
1972-09-30 American University Washington DC, DCnote the otherworldly radio interference throughout (among many sonic oddities and imperfections) - Deal, China Cat>Rider (incomplete on SBD), Bird Song!; (jerry breaks a string mid-Truckin', it sounds like)
16
1972-10-02 Springfield Civic Center Springfield, MACold Rain & Snow, Bird Song, the first of many outstanding Oct '72 Playing in the Bands; set two has th first Truckin'>Nobody's Fault Pairing(?) with a bonus Feelin' Groovy jam in lieu of the usual other one
17
1972-10-09 Winterland Arena San Francisco, CA
Deal, live debut of Box of Rain, an all-timer Playing in the Band!! (aggro, orgasmic, jazzy, but sadly incomplete); set two opens with a drunk Grace Slick briefly jamming with the band(?), that portends a jolly set with shades of late Primal Dead, incl. spicy hot Big River, Mississippi Half-Step (minus ragged vocals), Greatest Story Ever Told, Brokedown Palace, Truckin'>bass solo>Other One
18
1972-10-17 Fox Theater St. Louis, MOno jam sequence, eh? Playing in the Band is another heater, the outro to Black Peter has some fine blues picking, Mississippi Halfstep is crisp, Sugar Magnolia>NFA>Goin' Down the Road>NFA is shreddy and loose
19
1972-10-18 Fox Theater St. Louis, MOset one is mostly sloppy and tech-troubled, save maybe Bird Song, Big River, Big Railroad Blues (lotsa fun tuning ditties and banter surrounding El Paso), China Cat>Rider; set two gets right to business with Playin'>Drums>Dark Star!!>Phil O Stomp!>Feelin' Groovy jam?!>Morning Dew
20
1972-10-19 Fox Theater St. Louis, MOTennessee Jed, Bertha, China Cat>Rider, Big River, Bird Song (minus tuning issues and weir's rancid harmonies), the Truckin'>Other One>He's Gone>Other One sequence is a real powerhouse!!, Greatest Story Ever Told, Comes a Time
21
1972-10-21 Vanderbilt University Nashville, TNfragments only - He's Gone has a gorgeous end jam, Greatest Story (incomplete), unfortunately the peak of the Other One meltdown seems to be lost to a tape flip
22
1972-10-23 Milwaukee Performing Arts Center Milwaukee, WI
AUD only - (after Sugaree, we get Weir: "Let's hear it for the past." *cheers* Lesh: "Let's hear it for the future!" *cheers* Weir: "And let's hear it for the present.") (note the goofy ending to El Paso) China Cat>Rider!!!, Mexicali Blues, Stella Blue!!!, Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Blues, a rather unique Playing in the Band (esp ~8mins in), last 10 minutes of Dark Star are quite the meltdown!,
23
1972-10-24 Milwaukee Performing Arts Center Milwaukee, WI
mostly AUD only - wasn't totally feeling set one in this quality, but when the SBD picks up with Truckin'>The Other One we are seeing the jazzier new directions the band was going (worlds away from europe 72!), complete with the first Phil-O Stomp (which itself contains a jam in which weir debuts the Let It Grow chords)
24
1972-10-26 Music Hall Cincinnati, OHset one is decidedly average; set two opens with a 28-minute Playin' in the Band (w/ drum n bass solo), Truckin'>Dark Star is uptempo but not terribly inspiring
25
1972-10-27 Veterans' Memorial Auditorium Columbus, OH
if you're counting, this is the final Loser with the "Sweet Susie" vocal line until Nassau '79 - the SBD mix is mostly vocals and drums, so listener beware (note the hilariously flubbed Mexicali); set two is a fantastic AUD(?) showcasing an ace Greatest Story Ever Told and perhaps the finest Tomorrow is Forever, peaking with a hot but rushed Truckin'>Other One>Mississippi Halfstep>Morning Dew sequence
26
1972-10-28 Cleveland Public Hall Cleveland, OH
set two has serious heat! - standalone He's Gone is an all-timer!!! (w/ searing jerry tone and a lengthy outro jam), El Paso (jerry wilding in the background), Greatest Story (fast as hell), Attics of My Life!, Big River, Dark Star (tight and exploratory, w/ brief Phil-O Stomp), (beware weir's shrieking on Sugar Mags and Casey Jones); fiery Johnny B Goode as second encore!; the jerry songs aren't quite holding together in set one (note the truncated/aborted Friend of the Devil) although Playin' in the Band is fierce as ever (and features both weir and donna screeching on the reprise, lol)
27
1972-10-30 Ford Auditorium Detroit, MIAUD onlya one AUD andy - tough to say if there's anything special here, although the incomplete Playing in the Band and standalone Truckin' show some sparks
28
1972-11-12 Memorial Hall Kansas City, MOan utterly bizarre document - it's Oops, All Guitars!: nothing but phil, bob, and jerry in ultra wide stereo separation - dig this Bird Song. Truckin' (standalone), Tennessee Jed!
29
1972-11-13 Memorial Hall Kansas City, MOAUD onlyAUD only - Playin' thru Dark Star>Phil-O Stomp>Feelin' Groovy>Morning Dew are available in more listenable quality and they're pretty damn hot!; set one is boomy, but a solid-to-hot show exists within, esp the stretched out China Cat>Rider
30
1972-11-14 Oklahoma City Music Hall Oklahoma City, OKBig River thru Casey Jones is a mad display of gusto!; Greatest Story Ever Told carries the energy over to set two! (but then BEW is a harbinger of the lazy '73 sound to come....) MaMU brings it back!
31
1972-11-15 Oklahoma City Music Hall Oklahoma City, OK((Dave's Picks 11 filler))no real jam sequence, but there's an all-timer NFA>Goin' Down the Road>NFA climax!! and a 32-minute Playin' in the Band (meh); opens in ultra stereo separation mode w/ lots of weir guitar,
32
1972-11-17 Century II Convention Hall Wichita, KSDave's Picks 11
Jack Straw in Wichita! (albeit with a nasty reel flip right at the beginning), Promised Land (jerry already in a mood), MaMU, perhaps thee all-timer Bird Song!!! (active and dynamic, not just vibes), a clean Box of Rain and Don't Ease Me In pairing; jerry shreds on Cumberland Blues and a standalone He's Gone, then a wickedly raucous Truckin'>Other One
33
1972-11-18 Hofheinz Pavilion Houston, TXDallas 11/18/72 discfragment only, incl thee all-timer Playin' in the Band!!!, a fiery Bertha>Greatest Story opener, and a hot Mississippi Halfstep
34
1972-11-19 Hofheinz Pavilion Houston, TXpremiere of Weather Report Suite Prelude, emerging out of a 25-minute Dark Star!
35
1972-11-22 Municipal Auditorium Austin, TXtypical fall '72 business—which is to say: solid as hell!; set two is where it really flies, starting with Greatest Story and bleeding into a jammed-out He's Gone (Truckin'>drums>Other One>Stella is merely par for course) Ramble on Rose is full-band perfection!
36
1972-11-24 Memorial Auditorium Dallas, TX
set one has mix and tech issues, meaning LOTS of Phil (not exactly a minus, to be clear!) and an overall looser vibe (dig jerry's spontaneous guitar solo when his mic craps out during the first verse of Deal!) Sugaree has more juice later in the set!, PiTB; (China Cat>Rider is missing a crucial section of the jam, sadly) stay for the near-primal NFA>Goin' Down the Road>NFA closer!!!
37
1972-11-26 Civic Auditorium San Antonio, TX
there exist a couple of SBDs that all sound like ass, wh;ch is a pity because it's a hidden gem!! - love set one! - dig phil's lead bass playing on Sugaree!, jerry's pinch harmonics on BTW, and the intense polyphony of Bird Song!, plus hot versions of Big Railroad Blues, Around n Around, and El Paso (keith popping off!); arguably a dip in energy with set two, but it catches fire again for a very dynamic Dark Star!!>bass solo!>Bobby McGee
38
1972-12-10 Winterland Arena San Francisco, CA
i kinda like this opening Bertha and Playin' in the Band! (but like dick latvala says: not the calibre of performance you'd expect from '72 Dead); China Cat>Rider is dependably strong (nice little touches in weir's interstitial solo... but then those closing harmonies fall flat as hell) and on The Other One you can hear the band straining, yearning for an Eyes of the World that doesn't yet exist (the result is somewhere between Tighten Up and that '74 Dead funk, but not nearly as interesting as either)
39
1972-12-11 Winterland Arena San Francisco, CAaverage '72 first set, with the juicy bits mostly lost from the SBD (preserved only on the AUD); (wft @ weir's "go home with knots in your head" comment??) Big Railroad Blues perks up, Dark Star becomes a very funky Feedback ~20 minutes in, stay for a very sweet Tomorrow is Forever afterward
40
1972-12-12 Winterland Arena San Francisco, CA
41
1972-12-15 Long Beach Arena Long Beach, CAi've always found this one to be unlistenable due to the super wobbly pitch
42
1972-12-31 Winterland Arena San Francisco, CA
43
44
1973-02-09 Roscoe Maples Pavilion Palo Alto, CAa legendary show in terms of number of debuts: U.S, Blues (as "Wave That Flag"), Loose Lucy, TLEO, Row Jimmy, Here Comes Sunshine, China Doll, and of course Eyes of the World (already a monster!)
45
1973-02-15 Dane County Coliseum Madison, WI
amazing first set, opening with a killer funky Loose Lucy, BEW, Mexicali, Tennessee Jed, fast Row Jimmy, (only Jack Straw falters in the lyric dept); Here Comes Sunshine! (early aggro version), TLEO, the really vibey Dark Star!!! with the loud POP! at 12:20 and the Baba O'Reily bass solo/jam into a brave Eyes of the World>China Doll
46
1973-02-17 St. Paul Auditorium St. Paul, MN
(He's Gone and BioDtL are beset with mix issues, so beware!) another strong first set, incl Box of Rain, Wave that Flag, Bird Song, Loose Lucy, TLEO, and Playin' in the Band!; another pre-reggae Row Jimmy, Big River, a unique Here Comes Sunshine>China Cat>Rider sequence(?!) (show has no proper jam sequence and lots of unfortunate gaps in the SBD recording)
47
1973-02-19 International Amphitheater Chicago, ILfragments onlyan all-timer He's Gone into a spacey Truckin'>jam>bass solo>Other One!>Eyes>China Doll sequence!
48
1973-02-21 Assembly Hall (University Of Illinois) Champaign Urbana, IL
S-tier China Cat>Rider, Mississippi Half Step, a thrillingly off-kilter Truckin' takes a longn funky detour w/ bass solo into Eyes of the World>Space (they fight thru Stella Blue - incomplete on tape - and jerry's tuning derails Sugar Magnolia) Casey Jones sounds like a party! and Jerry shreds on JBG; phil and keith dominate BEW,
49
1973-02-22 Assembly Hall (University Of Illinois)Champaign Urbana, ILavg first set - standouts are Mexicali Blues, Tennessee Jed, Box of Rain, Playin' in the Band (17 min of Europe '72-level intensity!), and jerry's guitar tone on Deal; Dark Star! is a tight, blues-jazzy 13 min into Eyes>China Doll (the latter a bit of a drag)
50
1973-02-24 University Of Iowa Iowa City, IAfragments onlyonly fragments circulate and they're god-tier - Truckin'>Nobody's Fault jam>Eyes>Bass Solo>Feelin' Groovy jam>Sugar Magnolia(?!?!?!!!!)
51
1973-02-26 Pershing Municipal Auditorium Lincoln, NE(Dick's Picks 28)
Promised Land and TLEO set openers are perfecto (sounding immaculate on DP28!), China Cat>Rider (not on DP28... yet LLR is??) has phil attempting the Feelin' Groovy interlude, Loose Lucy, BioDtL (not on DP28), Big Railroad Blues!, a fast intense Playin' in the Band closer; Big River!, Dark Star>bass solo>Eyes>Mississippi Half-Step hits the spot (but it's not a fave), while NFA>Goin' Down the Road is excellent (you can head for the parking lot during the NFA reprise, however!) (Latvala cites Tennessee Jed and Greatest Story as all-timers... I don't hear it, Dick.)
52
1973-02-28 Salt Palace Salt Lake City, UT(Dick's Picks 28)TLEO, He's Gone (in set one, as a closer!); whole 2nd set, incl a howling China Cat>Rider, Big River, Row Jimmy, Truckin'>bass solo>Other One! (w/ brief "Take Five" jam)>"Tiger" jam>Morning Dew
53
1973-03-15 Nassau Coliseum Uniondale, NY
that SBD tape could use an upgrade, lol! - stay for the gargantuan, near-flawless 40-minute Truckin'>Jam>Other One>Space>Eyes>China Doll sequence!, plus a killer slow Loose Lucy that opens set two (there's a hot Big River that's AUD only, too); prior, it's an average '73 first set, with above-average harmonies on Box of Rain, Row Jimmy and Here Comes Sunshine!
54
1973-03-16 Nassau Coliseum Uniondale, NYEnjoying the Ride box set ((PitB on Music Never Stopped sampler))
opens with a hot China Cat>Rider and Jack Straw combo, Bird Song is a feast of pinch harmonics; set two opens with a fiery Promised Land>Bertha!!>Greatest Story salvo! (there's also another spicy Big River that's incomplete on the SBD), keith coming in hot on Don't Ease Me In, last couple minutes of Dark Star get crazy w/ a unique transition into Truckin' (the only time they ever segued these two)
55
1973-03-19 Nassau Coliseum Uniondale, NY
SBD mix has lots of phil! (he drops bombs on Box of Rain, I Know You Rider, PitB, Mississippi>Stella Blue!>Jack Straw) - first He's Gone after pigpen's death (as set one, song two no less; segued from Promised Land??!) fast TLEO (chased by a slooow LLR 🥱), the first true China Cat>Feelin' Groovy>Rider sequence (the previous night had a fleeting one), raucous fast Around n Around, strong Tennessee Jed and Playin' combo to finish; whole near-continuous 2nd set, esp. Truckin'>Nobody's Fault jam (w/ slide solo)>Other One>Eyes>China Doll
56
1973-03-21 Utica Memorial Auditorium Utica, NY
Tennessee Jed, Here Comes Sunshine, China Cat>Rider (w/ tape-damaged Feelin' Groovy) and Playin' in the Band are keepers in an otherwise average first set; Greatest Story is nimble, TLEO, (phil leads Take a Step Back after BEW) a rare Brokedown Palace, WRS Prelude>Dark Star (what if the ambient section had a driving swing beat? now we know!) into a tape-compromised Eyes>Wharf (the latter butchered by jerry and rescued by weir with a surprise Mind Left Body jam?!)
57
1973-03-22 Utica Memorial Auditorium Utica, NYBird Song, (phil lectures the audience about clearing the fire aisle and that "the narcs are among us in full force" before Box of Rain, lol); Take a Step Back>Merry Go Round Broken Down after Big River, Truckin'>Nobody's Fault jam>The Other One!!
58
1973-03-24 The Spectrum Philadelphia, PADave's Picks 32 (a very buzzy recording...)
lotsa goodies sprinkled across 4 hours! - (Bertha opener flops) instead, we get a suite of hot country rock, incl BioDtL and Cumberland Blues, Box of Rain is tight (then weir butchers Jack Straw) Tennessee Jed, Here Comes Sunshine!, Playin' in the Band!; China Cat>Rider (w/ weir rocking a chunkier tone than usual, but is out-of-tune by Feelin' Groovy), an all-timer Big River!!!, a keith-driven He's Gone with a mournful slide guitar solo into a mammoth Truckin'>(Spanish) Jam!!>Dark Star (just a quick verse)>Sing Me Back Home
59
1973-03-26 Baltimore Civic Center Baltimore, MDDave's Picks 54is there such a thing as too much music, lol? - Box of Rain is a standout version, El Paso has some extra bite, Playin' in the Band has some busy Caution elements early on; Wolfman Jack introduces the band before Ramble on Rose, Greatest Story Ever Told cooks (albeit w/ some overzealous donna),
stay for the gargantuan and truly unique MaMU>He's Gone>Truckin'>Jam>Weather Report Suite Prelude>Jam!!>Wharf Rat>Bobby McGee>Eyes of the World>Morning Dew sequence!
60
1973-03-28 Springfield Civic Center Springfield, MADave's Picks 16 ((Wave That Flag is a Mars Hotel bonus track))
average to iffy 1st set - not much to highlight besides TLEO, Row Jimmy (still evolving into its reggae form), Around n Around (weir really feeling himself, which spreads to jerry for BEW), (weir delivers Take a Step Back + No-Smoking warning after You Ain't Woman Enough); Weather Report Suite Prelude>Dark Star>Eyes>Playin'
61
1973-03-30 War Memorial Auditorium Rochester, NY(few sources on this one - first set is AUD only)
fiery Deal (as song #2, no less!), TLEO, Cumberland Blues, Candyman (what sounds so dry on the SBds packs a punch in the roomy AUD tape), Bird Song is jammy and dynamic (jerry forgets the words, tho); set two opens with a spicy China Cat>Rider (jerry using some unique flavours on this one - also weir shouts "BEEP" at one point?), Jack Straw,
Greatest Story is too uptempo but a scorcher nonetheless, Truckin'>Jam (unique jazz-blues!, with some fighting for Eyes vs Other One)
62
1973-03-31 Buffalo Memorial Auditorium Buffalo, NY
jerry shreds all over El Paso (wasn't totally invested in the rest of set one, sadly); whole set two - opening with a Promised Land>Bertha>Greatest Story salvo!, then an almost baffling sequence of He's Gone>Truckin>Nobody's Fault jam!>Drums>Other One>Spanish Jam!>Other One>Jam!!>Feelin' Groovy????>I Know You Rider?!?!?!! (Sugar Magnolia is off the rails, however)
63
1973-04-02 Boston Garden Boston, MADave's Picks 21
an above average first set, mastered beautifully on DaP 21 - Mexicali Blues and Big River (lots of phil volume and jerry tone tonite!), a fast Row Jimmy (followed by weir threatening the audience with snakes and tarantulas in lieu of Take a Step Back, lol), Box of Rain (opens with a phil bomb), China Cat>Rider (billy grooving), Jack Straw, Don't Ease Me In!; all-timer Greatest Story Ever Told!!, MaMU, Loose Lucy, Jam/Space out of Sunshine! (song portion itself is alright), Weather Report Prelude>Eyes of the World! (really heats up during the minor key jam)>China Doll; JBG>And We Bid You Goodnight encore
64
1973-05-13 State Fairgrounds Des Moines, IAHere Comes Sunshine box
very hissy tape circulating on archive.org - Deal, China Cat>Rider, MaMU, (note the odd Don't Ease>Around n Around segue); middle set is average except for the intriguing last few minutes of Playin' in the Band; He's Gone!! (come for the harmonies, stay for weir's blazing guitar tone in the outro jam) into Truckin'>bass solo>Other One
65
1973-05-20 UCSB Stadium Santa Barbara, CAHere Comes Sunshine box
whole show - the Dusborne matrix mix captures a more lively and ragged '73 Dead than the usual SBDs suggest! - an unusually lively first set feat. great versions of MaMU (garage rock!), Box of Rain, Deal, LLR, Tennessee Jed (weir tone!), China Cat>Rider (more weir tone!), Playin' in the Band (Phil-driven); note especially the Truckin'>Nobody's Fault jam>Drums>Other One(simmering!)>Eyes (minus a squeaky Stella Blue at the end, with jerry sounding hoarse on Row Jimmy too)
66
1973-05-26 Kezar Stadium San Francisco, CAHere Comes Sunshine box
(note keith jamming on electric piano throughout the show!) (Promised Land opener is a whiff) Deal is thick and funky, (beware some nasty overtones and distortion in the dusborne mix on Jack Straw, Tennessee Jed, Row Jimmy—sounds like a windstorm?), jerry puts extra soul into his Sugaree vocals, Mexicali Blues!!!, (Row Jimmy is sour) TLEO is perhaps the speediest ever;
middle set is average, peaked by speedy-funky China Cat>Feelin' Groovy>Rider and Big River (peep keith's dominant piano on Around n Around); MaMU!, He's Gone is amplified by keith's barroom piano, Truckin'>Phil-O Stomp variant(!!)>Other One>Tiger jam
67
1973-06-09 Robert F. Kennedy Stadium Washington DC, DCHere Comes Sunshine box
(garcia is not having a good weekend - these are strong ensemble shows moreso than jerry showcasss) TLEO and Jack Straw have inklings of that 74' funk, Loose Lucy opens with some massive Phil tones, Mexicali and El Paso are hot (lots of sneaky jerry), Tennessee Jed closer is stadium-sized; set two opens with a balls-out fast Greatest Story Ever Told!, (who is the crowd booing at the beginning of He's Gone??) jerry teases Here Comes Sunshine during the Truckin' jam, but's they settle for a 2nd-set Playin' in the Band instead
68
1973-06-10 Robert F. Kennedy Stadium Washington DC, DC
((Postcards of the Hanging)) Here Comes Sunshine box + standalone
4 1/2 hours of music; a mixed bag - try Kevin Tobin's matrix mix for some life - Wave That Flag is the first that hits (they legit chose this shitty Ramble On Rose as the first teaser single for the box 😂) Box of Rain is nice except for some loud interference during jerry's slide solo, TLEO, Race is On, (El Paso is rowdy but weir is out of tune), Bird Song is representative (stay for phil's massive bass bomb @6:30) Playin' shows early signs of Bitches Brew vibes around 10min;
hot 2nd set, starting with a rager of an Eyes of the World!! (segueing into that one weird Stella Blue where jerry tries singing the verses in his upper register....) Big River!, Here Comes Sunshine is ace!, Around n Around delivers!, Dark Star (uptempo and jazzy, w/ Phil-O Stomp only 8 minutes in! plus some speaker-destroying low tones during Space @20min til the segue into He's Gone>Wharf Rat??!)
Truckin' and Sugar Magnolia are hypercharged versions; It Takes a Lot to Laugh is a precursor to how the band later arranges CC Rider, That's Alright Mama (w/ Betts and Trucks) sounds like a cross between Goin Down the Road, Scarlet Begonias and Mountain Jam (pretty cool i guess), Goin' Down the Road proper is a delicious venue for the 3-guitar jam-out!!
69
1973-06-22 P.N.E. Coliseum Vancouver, CanadaPacific Northwest box set
(jerry struggles with tuning throughout set one, although...) Deal, Bird Song (despite static and missing vox on the SBD), Playing in the Band, and Mexicali still hit; set two opens with one of the better trys at Here Comes Sunshine, (then weir blows Promised Land, lol) billy and keith are really carrying the band tonite (evidence: El Paso) with jerry sounding listless (a positive only on Black Peter and He's Gone)
you may as well skip right to Truckin'>Nobody's Fault jam>bass solo>Not Quite Caution/Bitches Brew jam>Ofher One>Tiger jam>Other One>Wharf>Sugar Magnolia!
70
1973-06-24 Portland Memorial Coliseum Portland, ORPacific Northwest box set
another keith and billy night - Mexicali, TLEO, Box of Rain (only track on the official comp), Big Railroad Blues (keith!), Sugaree (keith and billy!), China Cat>Rider (albeit incomplete on tape); You Ain't Women Enough (perhaps the tightest ever), note jerry adding extra harmonies to El Paso! then the odd standalone Stella Blue early in the set, Greatest Story>Bertha,
a darn good Dark Star (w/ extended "Elastic" jam in 6/8 time, and dominated by phil overall) into a darn good Eyes of the World (likewise phil-dominant)
71
1973-06-26 Seattle Center Coliseum Seattle, WAPacific Northwest box set
kinda underwhelming first set overall, tho note the Feelin' Groovy drop-in during China Cat>Rider and the shreddy BioDtL + Playing in the Band; set two has a perfect Black Peter!, a hot Big River (as usual) and a strong Here Comes Sunshine, the latter Other One jam (out of Bobby McGee) has some funky Bitches Brew touches and a fall-73'-esque Tiger jam
72
1973-06-29 Universal AmphiTheater Universal City, CAonly a SBD fragment survives, so... happy birthday to me!!! the Other One (feat. Elastic Jam and complete Feedback/Space meltdown) into Morning Dew is at least a keeper
73
1973-06-30 Universal AmphiTheater Universal City, CABird Song, Cumberland Blues, BioDtL, random first-set Black Peter; Greatest Story Ever Told, Ramble on Rose!, Dark Star>Eyes>Stella
74
1973-07-01 Universal AmphiTheater Universal City, CADon't Ease Me In!, Big River, China Cat>Feelin' Groovy>Rider, (Around n Around is an energetic mess);
75
1973-07-27 Grand Prix Racecourse Watkins Glen, NY((So Many Roads Disc 2))that dang ol' soundcheck jam, man
76
1973-07-28 Grand Prix Racecourse Watkins Glen, NY
(the SBD tape is marred by static and distortion at first, then awful pitch warping on Here Comes Sunshine and Playin' in the Band) Mexicali and maybe Deal are the only set one highlights; set two opens with Loose Lucy (still slow tempo), Big River is hot as ever, He's Gone>Truckin'>El Paso features exceptional playing but cursèd audio (bummer!), ditto China Cat>Feelin' Groovy>Rider and Eyes of the World, sadly!
77
1973-07-31 Roosevelt Stadium Jersey City, NJAUD only
tech problems and an overall listlessness affect set one, but you get the usual highlights - Mexicali Blues, TLEO, Tennessee Jed, and a really wacky Playin' in the Band (worth staying for!!); (China Cat>Feelin' Groovy>Rider has tuning issues) a hot Promised Land>Bertha>Greatest Story salvo! and the requisite perfect Big River!, no real jam sequence save for a compact Truckin'>Elastic Jam>Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad>JBG finale
78
1973-08-01 Roosevelt Stadium Jersey City, NJkeith-dominant magic starting with Big River (a major fuck yeah version!), Casey Jones (the crowd goes nuts!); Around n Around, come for a solid '73 ride-heavy Dark Star>El Paso but stay for a powerful Eyes of the World!>Morning Dew!
79
1973-09-07 Nassau Coliseum Uniondale, NY((Wake of the Flood Bonus Track)) ((Dave's Picks 38))first show with jerry playing Wolf - Mexicai, TLEO (beware an absolutely terrible LLR thanks to jerry); Sunshine is cool, MaMU, premiere of Let It Grow (already a jammy monster!), a massive Other One jam>Eyes of the World!
80
1973-09-08 Nassau Coliseum Uniondale, NYDave's Picks 38BioDtL, premiere of complete Weather Report Suite, Eyes>China Doll (to wrap set one!?); a lightning hot Greatest Story Ever Told (keith + jerry!!!), "Looks like another night of entropy" says bob re: multiple broken strings, Big River, (premiere of Let Me Sing Your Blues Away—what a weird one!)
81
1973-09-11 William and Mary College Williamsburg, VA
skip straight to Dark Star>bass solo>Morning Dew - lol @ phil telling a photographer to "get a telephoto lens and come back some other time" after Race in On, (dude, LLR sucks so much ass during this era....), already the slowing + funkening of China Cat>Rider has begun (peaking fall '73-summer '74), and there's a fun concise Playing in the Band; (Let Me Sing Your Blues Away returns, this time with horns, as does Weather Report Suite, which is suffocated under Marteen Fiero's sax histrionics) set two just ain't very good... hard to believe, but true!
82
1973-09-12 William and Mary College Williamsburg, VApretty skippable - the off-key horns on Let It Grow drown out the whole band, but you can still never really go wrong with a '73 Eyes of the World! (sans brass tonite)
83
1973-09-15 Providence Civic Center Providence, RI
Greatest Story Ever Told! (and the crowd goes wild!), Ramble on Rose (big keith!); tonite it's Truckin'>Eyes of the World that gets the brass treatment... the effects are mixed (prewritten horn charts don't tend to vibe with the Dead's arrangements, especially not in the lean and woody '73 sound they had developed) and best when Fiero is going apeshit in the high register rather than just vamping (note that even the proggy 7/8 "Stronger Than Dirt" jam out of Eyes has nifty horn parts!), Weather Report Suite has a lovely flute part!, (Let It Grow, Stella Blue and Sugar Magnolia[?!] are all unequivocally worse w/ horns, by contrast)
84
1973-09-17 Onondaga War Memorial Auditorium Syracuse, NYfirst set is the usual highlights - TLEO (obviously!), Mexicali Blues, (also, what the fuck is keith playing on LLR? is that a synth? an organ? it sounds like ass!) Loose Lucy, Casey Jones; 2nd set is saturated with the horns, to predictable effect
85
1973-09-20 The Spectrum Philadelphia, PAdefinitely an off-night, truly listless, with keith carryi g the band thru Greatest Story and the horns(?!) carrying Truckin
86
1973-09-21 The Spectrum Philadelphia, PA
Big Railroad Blues opener!, Here Comes Sunshine (solid), Loose Lucy, Black Peter, Playing in the Band (incomplete on SBD); Let Me Sing Your Blues Away (tight), Let It Grow!!! (a chaotic all-timer, horns and all!), Truckin' (sans horns, w/ garbled lyrics) into decon Phil-O-Stomp>Other One!!! (incl Elastic Jam and Mind Left Body Jam!), note keith's gorgeous contributions to Wharf Rat, One More Saturday Night (w/ horns, albeit mixed super low for a change, and phil WILDING)
87
1973-09-24 Pittsburgh Civic Arena Pittsburgh, PATLEO, (god, LLR sucks ass in this era), China Cat>Feelin' Groovy>Rider; Truckin'>Nobody's Fault But Mine (Eyes, WRS, and Sugar Mags w/ horns weren't hitting with me today...)
88
1973-09-26 War Memorial Auditorium Buffalo, NY
stay for a unique Playing in the Band!!; opens with a too-fast Here Comes Sunshine followed by a hot BioDtL, Big River, Row Jimmy, China Cat>Rider!>Around n Around ; aforementioned Playin' is very major key (shades of The Wheel), Sing Me Back Home, Truckin' is party mode w/ audience participation and midsong banter plus a gorgeous transition jam into Eyes (w/ horns, and a solid one!), WRS w/ horns is a freaky treat
89
1973-10-19 Fairgrounds Arena Oklahoma City, OKDick's Picks 19set one is infamously worthless, save maybe El Paso and PitB; Dark Star>Mind Left Body jam>Morning Dew is the keeper
90
1973-10-21 Civic Auditorium Omaha, NEit's a keith-dominant show - set one has cursèd audio and much flubbage (pity because Here Comes Sundhine, TLEO, and Cumberland have some heat!); the big jam sequence is Playin'>Mississippi Halfstep>Big River?!>Playin' reprise (pretty cool!), while the requisite Truckin' sequence goes nowhere interesting
91
1973-10-23 Metropolitan Sports Center Bloomington, MNthe infamous aborted Casey Jones encore ("Okay, asshole, you're through!" cries Phil); Black-Throated Wind with garth hudson-esque organ!, Truckin'>Other One>Drums>Space (jerry goes MIA from Weather Report Suite)
92
1973-10-25 Dane County Coliseum Madison, WI
set one is unexpectedly hot, incl a fierce Big River!!! (minus some weird mix anomalies on Tennessee Jed and an incomplete Playin'); MaMU!!, Dark Star veers immediately into a funky uptempo Mind Left Body Jam and peaks with the first of the Fall '73 noise jams, (Weather Report Suite gets a bit lost, but it all snaps back with) Goin' Down the Road Feeling Bad!!!>One More Saturday Night!
93
1973-10-27 State Fair Coliseum Indianapolis, IN
TLEO!!, Greatest Story and China Cat>Rider are hot n speedy!!; MaMU>Bertha opener!, tonite the jam sequence is a raucous redo of the Playin'>Mississippi>Big River>Playin' medley from 10/21 plus a short Truckin' into a lengthy instruments Nobody's Fault But Mine (then, instead of an Other One, we get back-to-back Wharf Rat>Stella Blue 🥱)
94
1973-10-29 Kiel Auditorium St. Louis, MOListen to the River box setfirst three songs of set one are solid, but then things get rather listless (Black-Throated Wind and Row Jimmy being the nadir; Eyes>China Doll is dependable but dare-I-say a lesser '73?); Greatest Story Ever Told, Big River, then a goated noisy Truckin'>Jam!!>Other One!!! sequence
95
1973-10-30 Kiel Auditorium St. Louis, MOListen to the River box set(opens with one of the lesser Here Comes Sunshines, sadly, altho phil n keith still deliver) MaMU scorches! as does TLEO (the usual skippables are skippable); set two has the juice, esp that Dark Star (feat Elastic Jam and my personal fave Mind Left Body jam!)
96
1973-11-01 McGaw Memorial Hall Evanston, IL2nd set SBD fragment only - an ethereal Morning Dew followed by a decent albeit out-of-tune Playin'>UJB>Playin' sandwich,
97
1973-11-09 Winterland Arena San Francisco, CAWinterland CompleteTLEO (of course!), Don't Ease Me In & Mexicali Blues (controlled chaos), Playin' in the Band (full aggro!); set two has a hot streak from Here Comes Sunshine thru Greatest Story!!>Bertha, broken by a solid WRS but reclaimed with Eyes of the World!
98
1973-11-10 Winterland Arena San Francisco, CAWinterland Complete1st set is quite average, save for a lovely Brokedown Palace (the Weather Report Suite is substandard tonite); 2nd set has the Palindrome, perhaps the finest example thereof, plus some goodies in the form of Big River and the jam out of Truckin'
99
1973-11-11 Winterland Arena San Francisco, CAWinterland Completekeith goes INSANE on El Paso!! and everything thereafter fucks hard; Mississippi Halfstep, the 2nd half of tonite's 36-minute Dark Star is really good, incl a wonky Mind Left Body Jam into Eyes of the World
100
1973-11-14 San Diego Sports Arena San Diego, CA30 Trips box
Big Railroad Blues opener!, Here Comes Sunshine is one of the greats (altho jerry seems to give up around minute 11...), China Cat>Rider! (BTW and Tennessee Jed are stinkers); whole 2nd set, comprised of a monster Truckin'>Jam>Other One>Jam>Big River?!>Other One>Jam?!>Eyes of the World>Other One?!>Wharf Rat sequence
