📍 Il 21 aprile la Commissione Europea ha proposto nuove regole e azioni verso l'eccellenza e la fiducia nel campo dell'Intelligenza Artificiale. 📜 Le nuove regole saranno applicate allo stesso modo in tutti gli Stati membri e seguono un approccio basato sul rischio.
⚠️ La chirurgia robotica-assistita è menzionata nel gruppo "ad alto rischio" per via della sicurezza dei suoi componenti.
👩‍⚕️👨‍🏫Come cittadini e ricercatori in ambito di sistemi robotici autonomi ci impegniamo quotidianamente a lavorare per il bene delle persone, e verso un'intelligenza artificiale sempre più affidabile.
🤝 Una delle nostre sfide per il futuro sarà comunicare meglio la nostra ricerca. 🤔 Anche se è intesa per aiutare l’essere umano e non per sostituirlo, la chirurgia robotica autonoma non finirà per spingere l’uomo al margine?
Seguiranno alcune riflessioni sulla frontiera futuristica a cui ci avviciniamo, quella in cui il genere umano incontra un altro tipo di agente, un agente artificiale.

Giovanni Gerardo Muscolo Assistant Professor in Applied Mechanics.
His research interest includes: Applied #Mechanics, Mechanisms and Machines for Industry, Vibrations and Multibody System Dynamics, Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems (MEMS), Sensors and Actuators, Robotics, Robotic Surgery, Exoskeletons and Legged Robots.

Maria-Camilla Fiazza, PhD student.
Her research has to do with understanding #safety in the context of autonomous surgical robots. Her biggest challenge will be teaching a machine to think about #context, so it can adapt to the very many types of circumstances it can encounter.

Your expertise will be of great use to the #ARS Research Project!

To meet the challenge of safety certification and bring about #acceptance of the technology by the public, we propose principles for a design paradigm that goes in the direction of safety by construction: design with #certification in mind, clearly distinguish the notion of safety from that of #responsibility, view the human component as scaffolding in the progressive transfer of decision-making to the machine, preserve #interpretability by renouncing black-box approaches, leverage interpretability to assign responsibility, and take corrective action only when the semantic of the human-machine interface is violated."

Meet the ARS Team and discover the #expertise behind the project! Let's begin with Eleonora Tagliabue, Ph.D. student at the Altair Robotics Labs, she is focusing her research on anatomical #simulations.

💬 I have always been amazed by the advantages that technology can bring to the medical field, and for this reason I decided to enroll in Biomedical Engineering, focusing on medical robotics during my Master.
I have become particularly interested in the development of personalized anatomical simulations, and I now deal with this topic within the ARS project.
During my studies, I have had the opportunity to travel a lot, getting to know several international realities. This has been a perfect fit with my attitude, since I love exploring, visiting new places, and getting to know different cultures!

💬 Mi hanno sempre stupito dai vantaggi che la tecnologia può portare in campo medico, e per questo motivo ho deciso di iscrivermi ad Ingegneria Biomedica, concentrandomi sulla robotica medica, durante il Master.
Col tempo mi sono interessata allo sviluppo di simulazioni anatomiche personalizzate e ora tratto questo argomento all'interno del progetto ARS.
🧳 Durante i miei studi ho avuto l'opportunità di viaggiare molto, conoscendo diverse realtà internazionali. Questo ha assecondato la mia natura perchè amo esplorare, visitare nuovi posti e conoscere culture diverse!

📜Inductive learning of answer set programs for autonomous surgical task planning - Application to a training task for surgeons

💬 The quality of robot-assisted surgery can be improved and the use of hospital resources can be optimized by enhancing autonomy and reliability in the robot’s operation. In this paper, we investigate the applicability of inductive logic programming for learning previously unknown axioms governing domain dynamics.

In the context of 1000 simulated scenarios, we demonstrate the significant improvement in performance obtained with the learned axioms compared with the hand-written ones;

Every researcher has its own expertise and interests! Today's the turn of Daniele Meli, Ph.D. student at the Altair Robotics Labs. In the ARS project 🧠 he works on autonomous logical learning and reasoning.

💬 After high school, I followed my interest for science and started studying Electrical Engineering for my bachelor. I then discovered my passion for robots, especially Iron Man, then I chose to study Automation Engineering for my master. In my master thesis, I focused on modeling artificial muscles for a robotic prosthetic hand.
🍿 When I do not work, I give up on logics and dedicate to music and sci-fi movies.

Ogni ricercatore ha la propria expertise e interessi! Oggi è il turno di Daniele Meli, studente Ph.D. presso il Laboratorio di robotica Altair Robotics Labs. Nel progettto ARS 🧠 si occupa di ragionamento autonomo e apprendimento logico.

💬 Dopo il liceo ho intrapreso la laurea triennale in ingegneria elettrica, perché le materie scientifiche erano quelle in cui riuscivo meglio. La passione per la robotica (e Iron Man) mi portano poi verso la specialistica in ingegneria dell'automazione. Per la tesi magistrale ho lavorato ad un progetto su una mano robotica con muscoli artificiali.
🍿Nel tempo libero, abbandono la logica e mi dedico a musica, film e serie TV di fantascienza.

Every researcher has its own expertise and interests! Meet Daniele Meli, Ph.D. student at the Altair Robotics Labs working at the ARS Project - Autonomous Robotic Surgery.


💬 After high school, I followed my interest for science and started studying Electrical Engineering for my bachelor. I then discovered my passion for robots, especially Iron Man, then I chose to study Automation Engineering for my master. In my master thesis, I focused on modeling artificial muscles for a robotic prosthetic hand. In the ARS project 🧠 he works on autonomous logical learning and reasoning.

👏👏 We are glad to share with you the final results of the PROST Project - Robotic Prostate Biopsy that includes also some Pre-Clinical ex-vivo tests.

ℹ️ About PROST
The project aims at the technical and commercial validation of an Autonomous Prostate #Biopsy System that will use robotic #autonomy to reduce human errors in prostate cancer diagnosis.

On 25th July 2019 the project has been awarded the Proof of Concept (PoC) grant, by the European Research Council, in the same round with other 61 Research projects, of whom 9 in Italy and one at the Verona University.

The PROST project leverages the results of the on-going ERC-AdG project ARS (Autonomous Robotic Surgery) and the availability of a prototype of robot for prostate biopsy developed with a grant by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

💬 In 2017 I received my Master’s Degree in Mathematics at the University of Verona. In the same year, I joined the Ph.D. program in Computer Science at the same University, working at the Altair Robotics Labs
💡 My research focuses on the definition of a model to learn surgical gestures to automate simple interventions in the context of Minimally Invasive Robotic Surgery.

🎬 In my free time I manage #mathITA a Youtube Channel about mathematics, showing how this discipline is part of our everyday life. Videos are a good way of making science accessible also to non expert people!

💬 Nel 2017 ho conseguito la laurea magistrale in Matematica presso l'Università di Verona. Nello stesso anno, ho aderito al programma Ph.D. in Informatica presso la stessa Università, lavorando nel laboratorio Altair Robotics Labs.

💡 La mia ricerca si concentra sulla definizione di un modello di apprendimento di gesti chirurgici così da automatizzare interventi semplici nel contesto di chirurgia robotica minimamente invasiva.

With Bogdan Maris, Chiara Tenga, Rudy Vicario, Luigi Palladino, Noè Murr, Michela De Piccoli, Andrea Calanca, Stefano Puliatti, Salvatore Micali, Alessandro Tafuri and Paolo Fiorini.

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer, after breast cancer, and is one of the leading causes of death in men.

PROST is our first #prototype of a prostate biopsy robot that includes a level of autonomy in target identification, image fusion and needle guidance.

The robot aims at reducing human error in #biopsy planning and execution, it can also guarantee that high-accuracy prostate biopsies are accessible, thanks to a low-cost solution that works independently of the clinician’s experience.

Our pre-clinical ex-vivo #tests were performed in collaboration with a cohort of 10 urologists: Dott. Salvatore Micali with his Team from Università degli Studi di Modena e Reggio Emilia, and the medical Team at Università degli Studi di Verona leaded by Dott. Alessandro Antonelli.

PROST is funded by the European Research Council under the Proof of Concept grant.

This curiosity and the participation in an open lab introduced me to medical robotics. 👩‍🎓 So I enrolled in Computer Science and graduated with a Master thesis on medical robot modelling during a surgical procedure.

⛰️ When I'm not involved in computer science, I like walking in nature and reading adventure books to free my imagination.

SAFETY is an essential aspect in robot #autonomy.

To ensure that the robot is acting without danger we structured its knowledge in a human-like #logic made of 🧱🧠 actions, relations and objects. 🤖 ❓ In this way, the behaviour of the robot is easily interpretable by a human expert, this guarantees safety standards as a surgeon would. 👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️

Ad anticipare il taglio del nastro degli spazi di via Santa Teresa, 12, nell’area degli ex magazzini generali, due giornate di attività dedicate alle scuole e un inspirational talk online, sul tema della robotica e delle nuove tecnologie.

ODINO Verona robotics Lab has officially opened!

The Officina d'Innovazione Verona is an innovative place where university knowledge meets with young people interested in #STEM disciplines and manufacturing companies looking for skilled staff.

The Lab is provided with 4 educational robots that can simulate a real supply chain. A unique opportunity to approach technology in a friendly way, toward the future of work and 4.0 industry.

The project is led by Paolo Fiorini representing Università degli Studi di Verona, Comune di Soave, Fondazione SAFE, Consorzio Il Soave, Confindustria Verona and is financed by Fondazione Cariverona.

Activities will be held in collaboration with Verona FabLab
