Abstract
The presentation will start with an overview of ASM and a review of previous versions. Oracle has made enhancements with each version including new tools and the introduction of the ASM cluster file system.
ASM has made several fundamental changes with the installation and architecture. These important changes will be covered including what is involved in the installation process.
A new set of tools has been introduced and enhanced to support ASM. The ASM configuration assistant or ASMCA is a new application used for creating and administering ASM instances. Oracle has added functionality to the command line ASMCMD and turned it into a powerful tool. Examples using both tools will be covered in detail including new options available in OEM.
The grid architecture will be covered to include Oracle Restart and Real Application Clustering.
The new acfs or ASM cluster file system will be covered in detail. The steps involved in setting up and maintaining acfs will be covered to include step by step examples.
The challenges of upgrading previous versions of ASM, migrating databases to ASM, and backup recovery scenarios will also be examined.
A new set of permission alternatives have been introduced including the new SYSASM role.
In conclusion, a philosophical look at the advantages to migrating to an ASM instance will be covered.
