All without talking to anyone. | Spontaneously take a road trip and purposely get lost. | Do housework while singing at the top of my lungs
| Joe M | Salem, MA | Running - BTW, I disagree that dating sucks. Just think that you are meeting someone new. If you click, great! If not, it was worth the time and maybe you learn something new about yourself. | reading and listening to a podcast are good. Maybe watching a movie on TV
| Bryson C | Anchorage, AK | Grab a pint of ice cream, maybe a beer or two and catch up on my shows without having to explain or wait for someone else! | Going out to breakfast or lunch and not worrying about waiting for someone, being stood up, or talking when I don't have something to say.
| Shannon B | Ashburn, VA | Pour a glass of wine, pull out my student-grade paints and go to work on a canvas for a few hours (paint-by-the-glass style) --> can be extended for a night-in date with huzbot. we both tried starry night once. it was way more fun than we expected | agree +1 on solo salsa dancing! way easier to meet people and you can dance every song
| India T | Austin, TX | Go to my favorite bar for happy hour (pick a quiet one) with a book. I always remember to bring headphones in case it gets too loud! | Swimming @ Barton Springs, Movies, Reading at home, bubble bath, also like how have we not said MASTERBATE - MAGIC WAND IS EVERYTHING
| Rebecca D. | Austin, TX | I love taking a speaker, a coffee, and a skateboard to my favorite mini ramp on a Saturday and skate while the sun rises. | Masturbation, duh | Practicing bass or journaling
| Miriam M | Austin, TX | I love to go to the bouldering gym and find a route that I can't do and work on it until I get it, or until like an hour goes by. | I'll also watch nature documentaries and/or Dr. Who. | If I'm lucky, it'll be raining when I'm home and I can make tea or coffee and drink it and then cuddle into my bed and have a nap.
| Ida R | Austin, TX | Early(ish) morning hikes before it gets too crowded on a local trail. I get to listen to longer podcast eps without distractions. Afterward, I will get breakfast tacos. My favorite way to spend a weekend morning solo! | One of the best things about being single is having my bedroom be just for me. Everything outside my bedroom can be chaotic and stressful and messy. But I know that this is one place where I have things where I want them and I can shut the world out for a little while. | Going to the movies by myself. Popcorn for one and getting to see what I want without having to cajole anyone else to come along. Afterward, I will go to a cofee shop and read or walk around my neighborhood.
| Christina M. | Bainbridge Island, WA | My first rule to singleness: I do what I want. I enjoy reading, book groups, the pub trivia night sponsored by my local library. I go to a classic film showing at my local cinema once a month (I invite others and if they show, Great!, if they don't, Great! - I have a wonderful time anyway). I volunteer at my local history museum. At home, I may binge watch a British mystery series, or watch one episode each night. I go to the gym at least three times a week after work. If I want to go out for a drink, I go. If I want to eat dinner out, I go. If I want to go into the city to see a theater production, I go. If I want to go on a vacation, I go. | Do do have two grandchildren and am very involved with them. I try to make every soccer and baseball game and attend every school performance. | I live fully. I hope I live in a way that gives others inspiration. I know newly singled older adults (I'm 48 and never married) who cannot do anything unless they have someone to do it with. I don't push - everyone is different - but, I do encourage them to do it anyway assuring them aloneness does not equal being lonely.
| Jenny T | Birmingham, UK | I like to make coffee on a Saturday morning and make plans for the upcoming season. Book theatre tickets, plan weekends away, circle films to see in the cinema, add local events to your calendar. By having a social schedule I'm less likely to feel lonely. And you get to do whatever you want, which is a delight. I'll be working autumn out this weekend. | Brunch, coffee, podcasts - heaven. | Be a gym bunny.
| Amy L. | Bronx, NY | I love singing, whether it's singing along with Spotify or making up dumb little songs about the chores I'm doing. | Going to see theater by yourself is great for someone (like me) who likes to think through the show for a bit after it's over and feels pressured to have an opinion right away when someone else asks something innocuous like "Did you like it?" as we leave the theater. | It's great to not have to worry you're pressuring someone to go to a place or do a thing they don't want to just for the company. Museums are awesome at your own pace!
| Stephanie | Bronx, NY | A few folks have mentioned traveling alone on here and I highly recommend it. Whether it's a shorter domestic trip or a longer international one, traveling alone makes me feel powerful and gives me time to be more introspective and curious about myself and the world than I can be when I travel with others. Getting up when I want, planning out the day exactly how I want, and treating myself to good food/drinks/etc where I want while traveling is liberating and exhilarating. I've also felt a lonely during times of solo-travel, and it feels important to kind of sit in that feeling too. | Seeing theater/movies/making museum visits solo.
| Sahar B | Brooklyn | Sleeping with my dog under the covers | taking long lass walks
| Hannah R | Brooklyn | SOLO VACATIONS - somewhere with white sand, mountains, and/or cocktails on the beach (I'm in a long term relationship and taking three days out of town to myself is still my favorite thing) | Stay at my trapeze studio for hours at a time | Walking instead of taking the subway
| David K | Brooklyn | Listen to LPs all day long | cheetos. All of them.
| Paula S | Brooklyn | Watch whatever I want on tv, drive my car and listen to whatever I want on the radio, sleep with my ceiling fan on high

| Sarah K | Brooklyn, NY | Go to eat alone at a crazy popular restaurant. There is usually a solo seat at the bar and you don't have to wait. You can talk to the bartender and learn about all the secret things to order. | Go to places where people are asked to be silent. People are much more engaging of strangers this way. Some ideas: Sleep No More, Noguchi Museum, meditation workshop, hotsprings, the movies | Take yourself to someplace your parents wouldn't take you when you were a child. I had an amazing time at Disneyland on a Twilight Pass -- surprisingly didn't feel like a creep!
| Julie B | Brooklyn, NY | Make myself coffee and sit in my ground-level bay window to watch the world go by, but not actually be a participating member of it | Get on the subway + get off at some random stop I've never been to - explore! | Look @ the ingredients I have in my fridge when I'm getting close to running out and improvise a new recipe

| Sabrina S | Brooklyn, NY | Travelling alone is complete freedom to me. People talk to me more when I travel alone and I get great tips about what to do, where to eat, etc. I don't have to negotiate what I want to do each day and I always get a seat at the bar at that hot restaurant where no one can get a table reservation. There's just something awesome about experiencing a new place through your own lense, without having to process with someone else. | Do a really tough hike up a mountain and appreciate the accomplishment and the solace at the top | Have dinner at the bar at a favorite local restaurant with a good book
| Emily R. | Brooklyn, NY | I love to binge crappy tv (helloooo love island), read books, and take long baths. I do yoga, spin, trampoline, and play on a volleyball team. I also love to cook and go to art openings. | MAKE FRIENDS and nurturing those friendships. I have this huge network of enormously supportive friends and an exceedingly full social life full of super exciting activities. I have friends all over the U.S. and can just go visit at the drop of a hat. I have a friend who takes me to the opera and others I see punk shows with and others that see electronic music with me (lots and lots of live music). I have co-workers who invite me to the hamptons for a saturday of wine tasting in a limo! I have hiking friends and murder book club friends and friends to see movies with and friends to cook dinner with and friends who ask me to watch their kids. | Dating is hard but being single is awesome. Also every time I watch my friends in couples fighting I feel relieved I dont have to deal.
| Alyssa J | Chapel Hill, NC | I love heading out to one of the forests out here, listening to a podcast, and just walking (getting lost!) | Salsa dancing is super fun when you're single. and and going to concerts alone is so awesome, you can dance like no one's watching | Blasting music, cleaning my apartment! (while stoned...)
| Alysha B | Chicago, IL | I love watching IU basketball games with my fellow Hooiser ladies at my favorite obnoxious IU part in the city. (My partner hates basketball haha, but don't worry we love Blackhawks Hockey together<3). | Going to Musicals in the City. Not many people I know like musicals so I go on dates with myself (sometimes my partner comes along, but rarely) and will go to my fav downtown Italian restaurant and then to one of the nearby shows.
| Leah N | Chicago, IL | Hit up a farmer's market, go for a swim and then make myself a nice dinner with ingredients from the market | Just sitting on the couch reading and listening to records
| Amber F | Chicago, IL | If I'm cleaning around the house, DJ Funk is blaring and I'm dancing around more than cleaning.
| Jason H. | Chicago, IL | I love solo time at the gym. Later in the evening, on a Friday or Saturday night. Barely anyone around. Just me an the weights. I also love reading, writing, and falling into hours of playing my Xbox. | Sitting on the porch with a book, and a cigar.

Go on a walk and listen to a podcast. Step 5. Nap. Step 6. mani/pedi Step 7. Take yourself out to an early dinner and activity (i.e. movie, museum, sports game). | Massages and spa days are also nice. | Wednesday night at Bordel for live music is low key and makes you feel like you're at an underground, private event.
| Annelies Z | Christchurch, New Zealand | Going bouldering so I can work on problems without other people trying to give me ideas (problems in bouldering and short climbing routes that are usually hard and can only be done in a few ways). That way I get the physical and mental satisfaction :) Then I get a coffee and croissant and sit in the sun and enjoy the sounds around me. | Weeding and planting out in my garden on a sunny day!
| Bethany | Cincinnati | I tend to pick up my cross-stitch when I'm alone and want to clear my head, and work on that while binge watching a show that doesn't require 100% attention
| Sarah | Cincinnati, OH | Cincinnati has numerous free museums, i.e. the Cincinnati Art Museum, so I enjoy going to those on my own and wandering around. Since I love learning, I find it's better to go to places like that alone anyway. I can read all the information cards without feeling rushed and the silence is pretty great, too. :) | I enjoy doing my grocery shopping at odd hours, especially when it's not busy. I get what I need with half the hassle and typically, if I go early enough, the selection is fresher and there are plentiful manager's specials that haven't been scooped up yet. | I love exploring parks and greenspaces that have numerous spots to lay out a blanket or a fold-up chair. Beautiful views, especially if a body of water is nearby, and lovely reading time.
| Gabe R. | Columbus, OH | Recently I've been ordering Thai and watching British period piece films like "Room With A View" or "Barry Lyndon" while getting high. I've never been much of a weed smoker, but since it's become legal recreationally, I've been indulging more. The combination of the spice and sugars of Thai, the nearly Shakespearian eloquence of classic period dramas, and being in a comfortable, foreign, slightly foggy headspace is a remarkable way to wind down a Sunday. Occasionally I'll top it off with an ice-cream sandwich. | Listening to music with my phone on airplane mode and walking around the park
| Eva M | Dallas, TX | Wear comfy clothes and lounge around the house doing DIY projects, gardening, organizing, watching Youtube videos that I would never watch with anyone. Also going for long walks in the neighborhood while listening to podcasts | I also like to go to a coffeehouse to read a book and people watch. My favorite thing to do though is drinking and eating whatever I want, whenever I want. I tend to eat healthier when I'm eating just for me and love how I feel afterwards
| Dana K | Denver, Colorado | Take my dog on adventures! I pick a new hike, park or dog-friendly store each week and make a go of it. | Create! Sewing, embroidery, and crafting are so easy to pick up, even for the less than artistic among us! And it's a good excuse to befriend people at the local craft store.

| Judith T. | Germany | Definitely doing sports. It's something I hardly can do with someone else, except for my SO (SO you ask? I study far away from home and we only see each other 2 or less times a month. So I like to see myself as half-time single with full time-single things to do in my freetime). Especially I do sports when there's not a bunch of work to do and only then I am given the possibility to care about myself and my mental and physical health. | Ever enjoyed a cinema by your own? I always thought it is something so grown-up. But I guess I'm grown up now (I'll be 29 by this Saturday)? Ha. I really love going to the cinema for myself. I like twisted and severe artsy movies. Without company I don't need to face my favors and taste in movies and I am able to just enjoy this particular piece of art. | Ah, yeah! Going to the art museum by your own. I highly recommend that! Enjoy and absorb art works by your own speed. It's priceless!

I do whatever I want for however long I want to do it. | Going on a long, quiet hike or walk with my dog. | I agree with blasting my music and dancing like nobody's watching.
| Roxanna S | London, UK | I like to go to museums and art galleries alone, as you can move as quickly as slowly through the exhibits as you like. London luckily has so many great, free museums too. | City breaks are great alone too. With friends or a partner is also fun, but you have to compromise a lot more. When you are alone, you can do whatever you like and eat when and what you like. It can also be cheaper, as you're only seeing the sights that interest you, and not every meal needs be a grand affair. I love exploring a city while listening to music, and it's a bit anti-social to have headphones on when with someone else. I had an amazing 3 weeks in Japan alone a few years back after a horrible break-up, and it was fantastic. I was mainly alone, but ever lonely. | I find the cinema easier alone too, no need to try match your schedule up with a friends or partners. Or try to agree which film to see.
| Chris S. | Los Angeles, CA | Late afternoon walks around the Silverlake Reservoir listening to podcasts!

| Lois R. | Los angeles, CA | I put some on some Billie Holiday, Daniel Caesar or The Carter Album (or anything else I'm feeling at the moment) get a glass of wine and put on my PJ's. It's as if I'm rehearsing for myself and it helps me improve my vocals. | I enjoy going grocery shopping alone. It's not a chore to me. It's my time to make sure I am eating all the right foods, so I stay on top of my health lol.
| David G | Manhattan | Take long long bike rides with no set plan or time frame. | Take a day trip to go hiking. Alone. And find a place to eat after. Alone. | I'm single. I do a lot alone. It's OK.

I sometimes listen to it on repeat...
| Tara | NC | I create a space for myself, light candles, watch shitty ass TV and masturbate | Listen to podcasts and clean and paint

Stroll around the city listening to podcast, getting lost on purpose and take forever to take the photograph I want to take without anyone getting impatient with me | Thrift shopping - I can spend hours browsing

Definitely masturbate | Do the things I have to do like clean my room and meal prep. Even though I have to do them, most times I feel great doing it since I feel like I accomplished and learned something.
| Kate J | Normally Melbourne. Currently Bogota, Colombia | TRAVEL watching the people around me in relationships struggle with long distance pangs, plus heaps of people end up cheating on their partners. Appreciate that you can do whatever you want while away without any guilt or repercussions! Not saying bang every night but if anything does happen, just recognise that you have the freedom to enjoy it | Learn to rely on yourself for emotional support. It's so easy if you're dating someone to text all the time everyday, and they just naturally become your day-to-day support system. But if you always have that, you never learn to support your own well-being. Use this as an opportunity to grow | Go to parks on your own with a camera and take AS LONG AS YOU WANT taking photos. The problem with doing this in a group/with a partner is that you all gotta move at the same pace. FUCK THAT. Spend 20 minutes taking photos of moss. You ain't got a schedule or anybody nagging you

| Michelle B | Portland, OR | Go on runs where I break into spontaneous dance in the forest. Go on runs past people eating while I am listening to really awesome sexy spanish music. Pick flowers for myself on said runs, running through the street with my makeshift bouquet. | One of the best solo memories of the last 10 years was waking up in Patagonia (on "the W") at 4am for the most beautiful sunrise and running, rolling in the grass, being wild by myself until 8am when everyone else seemed to wake up and get on the trail. This amazing day was followed by a birthday when I decided to not contact anyone I knew and woke, rode alongside a chilean bus driver hearing his driving stories, was the first to hear from a couple that I met that they were pregnant, ate a small pizza by myself, went to a restorative yoga class in a women's home, got a massage, watched a sunset on the edge of the continent, and then took myself out to a drink. Pure joy. | I have been getting TONS of joy going out to dinner and saying "for one" and then challenging myself to not have anything but a menu, maybe a journal or a book, but definitely not a phone, ideally nothing. It seems like if you can own, absolutely everything can be fun alone.

| Whitney S. | Salt Lake City, UT | Solo mountain biking, skiing, or hiking to get away from people and the chaos of life. On of my favorite quotes from a book is "I don't think I will ever know my full capacity for solitude". Amen. (Refuge by Terry Tempest Williams). Ironically, I met my boyfriend while on one of these search-for-solitude bike rides in the mountains, lamenting over a failed relationship. Best bike ride I have ever been on :) | 2 hour massages, a rare and special treat
| Kate K. | San Diego, CA | Waking up and laying in bed til I decide I want to make breakfast. Could mean watching shows, listening to podcasts, reading, or going on social media. Leisurely mornings are the best.

It opened my heart to many possibilities and perspectives | Meet new friends and say yes to whatever comes in my way
| Courtney B | San Jose, CA | Date myself: when you go on a date, you don't skimp on the extras. I make a conscious effort to go on a date with myself, which often includes watching guilty pleasures on Netflix that my man wouldn't particularly enjoy, painting my nails, wearing sweats, eating Mac & Cheese, drawing, crocheting, or whatever I'm feeling. The best part is, this is something you can do when you are in a relationship - and I am! My man encourages my me-time. I love that about us, and I love to check in with myself too | I'll also make a date for myself at the mall. Set aside some amount of money that I get to spend on myself, take as long as I want in the Homegoods aisles or in Sephora and in the Gap dressing rooms, and buy an iced caramel macchiato from Starbucks to enjoy while I'm out. | In college, I enjoyed driving the ~300 miles home by myself. I had my usual stops for lunch in Iowa, long country roads to myself, a karaoke party in my car, and the music up as loud as I wanted or as quiet as can be & windows down if I feel like it.

| DeMera O | South Lake Tahoe, CA | Go lay out & read a book on the beach, lose myself in the book/record store, hit the gym, go get a pedicure (just for the foot massage), deep clean my apartment, pot some plants, have coffee and a good read on my modest garage apartment porch with a an epic view of the mountains | Drink wine, smoke cigarettes (for nostalgic reasons - it's what my grandmother did while drawing) whilst watercoloring and watching movies like Steel Magnolias and the Godfather... | Long road trips back home to Texas with my special 'I'm Coming Home' playlist with classic country tunes
| Freyja B. | South Orange, NJ | Yoga, meal-prep, organize my closets, clean my refrigerator | Drink a martini at a bar by myself while I do the crossword | I'm not actually single either but my partner lives 4 states away and we only see each other twice a month. I think it's the best of both worlds.
| Sandra | Switzerland | OK so this sounds silly but I have really gotten into my plants lately, I've been buying them but also learning how to take care of them and make plant babies and reading about them. I live in an apartment without a balcony but having my green friends waiting for me when I come home just makes me so happy | Get on a train somewhere I haven't been yet without an exact plan. I plan everything always so this is pushing me outside my comfort zone. I bring a book and podcasts but more often than not find myself watching the people around me and listening in on their conversation | Sorting through my stuff, throwing out things I don't need anymore, reminiscing in memories and feeling that pleasure of owning pretty things that just get more valuable the less I have in total. And all this of course with a great playlist on.
