Student Recommendation Board

Goal: To encourage discussion about books and promote the library's collection
For: Grades 3+

Description: When students find a book they like, they add it to their class's list on the whiteboard (can be anonymous or with their name). Once someone borrows the book, it gets crossed out from the list. Once a list has been completely loaned, it is removed and a note of congratulations is added to the whiteboard! Lists are rotated on a 2–3-week basis so that every class can participate and to keep the lists fresh. If some class's lists are short, I add a few library recommendations (marked with a star).

Rules:
It cannot be a book that is already very popular (Ex. not Dogman, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Babysitters (Graphic Novel), etc.
‎It must have 'substance'; No search and finds, puzzles, etc. We want to have discussions!
It must be in the library's collection
It must be actively available and not loaned out
If a series is chosen, the first book goes on the list if possible, or the next in chronological order
Lists are rotated every 2-3 weeks

I have only had the board up for a few months now, and it has garnered the attention of both the students and the staff. Aside from new books, it gives the students a chance to look over a collection we think would fascinate them and allows older books to be freshly looked at! Some books get loaned out so quick I have to sneak in another from the series or a duplicate.

(I believe an image of our implementation of the board has also been submitted)

A day I call "Library Unplugged" - where there's no phones allowed in the library at lunch and instead I set up a doodle station, colouring sheets, some large sheets for bilateral drawing, and some spaces where students can just sit and be etc. I always frame it as an invitation to come disconnect from tech.Secondary
