He was chairman of the 1977 national meeting of the Geological Society of America (GSA), was president of the Quaternary Geology and Geomorphology Division of GSA, was Associate Editor of the GSA Bulletin for 15 years, was awarded "Distinguished service to the Geological Society of America, was U.S. representative to the UN International Geological Correlation Program, and was Director of Field Excursions for the 2003 International Quaternary Congress. In 2013, he won the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Northwest Geologic Society. He published four books and eight professional papers in the past year.
