GLOBAL BEGINNING - Arise of Deinstitutionalization & Normalization 1960The deinstitutionalization of people with mental disabilities began in the 1960s and 1970s, reflecting the civil rights movements in Western countries. At the same time the term normalization gained prominence in Scandinavian countries, meaning the acceptance of people with disabilities into regular daily-life with their abilities and capacities to act in daily-life. While Banks-Mikkelsen’s and Nirje’s use of normalization pushed the barriers of various fields into inclusiveness, Wolfensberger changed the term to 'social role valorization'. These two movements could be accepted as the start of supported decision-making model in various fields. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normalization_(people_with_disabilities)https://www.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/styles/full_width_feature/public/thumbnails/image/blackmarble_2016_americas_composite.png?itok=9OuXCBd8Africa and Europe from a Million Miles Away on July 29, 2015.NASADeinstitutionalization, Normalization, International, GlobalUniversalNormalization & Deinstitutionalization of Mentally Retarded Individuals: Controversy and Facts by Sharon Landesman & Earl C. GLOBAL - United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability [UN CRPD]2006200812/13/2006: CRPD & Optional Protocol drafted.
30/03/2007: Signed.
03/05/2008: Effective by. Any state parties are welcomed to sign and ratify the convention and the optional protocol anytime.

The Convention is the most essential international recognition for individuals with disabilities around the world to protect their human rights, as well as establish social developments locally in parties homeland regarding disability context. This requires two changes in disability context: First removing disability from the medical model to a more social-ecological model of disability, and second, to shift from a charity approach to an equal rights approach of disability.

NEW ZEALAND20072008Supported decision-making is offered under the signature (30 March 2007) and the ratification (25 Sept 2008) of the CRPD and the Protection of Personal and Property Rights Act (1988) as one of the system of guardianship.
