Background

The Adams 12 Digital Literacy Skills Matrix is based on the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Standards for Students, the Adams 12 Literacy Department’s Inquiry Cycle, and the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The ISTE Standards are the standards for learning, teaching and leading in the digital age and are widely recognized and adopted worldwide. However, they are quite broad and not differentiated for K-12 students. The Adams 12 Digital Literacy Skills were designed to align with the Adams 12 definition of digital literacy, and provide a grade level continuum of skills students need to master the ISTE standards by the end of 12th grade.

The skills at each grade level are broken apart by the three strands of digital literacy: Information Literacy, Technology Literacy, and Digital Citizenship. Where applicable, connections to the inquiry cycle have been noted. Alignments to the ISTE standards and CCSS are also indicated at each grade level. (Please note, K-2 CCSS Math standards do not align with the Matrix and have been left out intentionally.)

To switch between grade levels, click on the grade level tabs at the bottom of the document. Similar to the CCSS, many skills repeat from grade to grade, with increasing levels of complexity until that skill has reached a mastery level.
