1On the magneticle particle examination, you mention cracks below the surface can be detected. What is the depth limit for detection? Does it depend on the magnetic field being generated?Tom MarreelIt is hard to give a definitive answer other than "near the surface". Yes the strength of the magnetic field generated will influence the result.

2Which specific parts of the pump are required to undergo UTE inspection? Would it be acceptable if the inspection is conducted only at the nozzle area?Ilham Maulana ArfahSee Table 14 (in slide 70) for identification of what Inspections are required for which components of the pump. It is largely to do with pressure containing parts.

3Which specific parts of the pump are required to undergo UTE / RT inspection? Would it be acceptable if the inspection is conducted only at the nozzle area?Ilham Maulana Arfah

4Can you shed some light on PAUT/TOFD? is it better than RT?Anonymous AttendeeThe following article may help understand this field

11
5Do Plan 11 and 52 (as example) specified as auxillary piping and should be inspected accordingly?Ruslan SagitovYes. Seal piping is auxiliary process piping
12
6Thank you for this very useful course, I have one question: is UT equally effective on painted surfaces?Anonymous AttendeeYes UTE can be used on painted surface. Loose paint should be removed.
13
7For a specific material such as (Super duplex and duplex materials), are there any tests such (corrosion, ferrite, hardness and so on.), even if the customer doesn't require Abdallah HassaniThese properties will all be detailed in the Material Test Report (Material Certificate).
The NDE we are discussing here is in reference to the quality of the castings and the welding.
14
8What type of test should be done for a pump casing drainage nozzle? same as succion or pressure side nozzles?milagros antunezPer Table 14 this would be an Auxiliary connection weld.(scroll left) >>>>>>>>>
15
9API 610 indicates The Class 2 inspection requirement for ">80% MAWP and >392°F". What shall be greater than 80% MAWP? Is it Rated Discharge Pressure or Max. suction pressure and Shutoff pressure (including testing tolerances)?Anonymous AttendeeSeveral of you asked similar questions. So I have revised the presentation to better address the subject. See attached Slides 70-73 from the revised Presentation
16
10what is the appropriate NDE method for connection welds(set on type)?Anonymous AttendeeSee Table 14 Auxiliary Connection Welds (scroll left)
17
11is any standard about depth or length of crack still can be used ? because my customer still want to used the partsRizki Rajab PrianganPer API610 Table 15, ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) Section 8 gives the acceptance criteria for any defects that the NDE reveals. If they are non-compliant then weld repair can be carried out followed by further NDE to ensure the quality of the repair.
18
12For Asia (Indonesia) how long deliverable need?Wahid ImawanLPE or MPE will not significantly add to the lead time. UTE & RXE of the castings can extend delivery time by several months!
If you specify radiographic inspection of castings you restrict the choice of foundries to those that have in-house RXE inspection facilities (usually the most expensive foundries with the longest lead times)
So only specify it when you really need to and are prepared for the cost and lead time implications
19
13Is an impact test always performed on the API 610 pumps or only below a certain temperature? Clause 6.12.4.5 specifies that impact testing shall be done for CS and low alloy steel pressure retaining parts with temperature between -29°C and 38°C. Here, 38°C appears to be very high and may imply impact testing requirement for almost all the pumps. Is my understanding correct?Anonymous AttendeeScroll left for clause 6.12.4.5 >>>>>>>>>>
Applying the entirety of this clause means that only pumps in Low Temp applications will need impact testing. Most pumps at 40C will be exempt.
20
14Do API 610 accept EN standard also?Anonymous AttendeeYes
21
15if you find a defect in the percentage extension i.e. in the 10% can you request to extend for the 100% especially if it is a non accettable defect the one you have detect in that 10%?CARLO MARIA DI FELICEYes. If, for example, you are RXE testing 5% of the welds in the auxilliary process piping and one or more of them fails, it is reasuonable and usual to require additional welds to be tested.

1Hi Simon, Thank you for the nice presentation. LPT procedure is done on final machined castings or raw castings.Muhammad UsmanBoth would be my answer. Firstly at the foundry to see if there are any surface indications that warrant excavation and possible welding. Then on the finish machined casing to see if machining has uncovered any flaws that were not visible on the raw casting.
31
2How to UT test rounded surfaces? Anonymous AttendeeIf the curve radius is small you probably need a curved transducer.
32
3Hi, Can we do UT on parts having cavity inside like volute casing.Muhammad UsmanYes. Because you will be investigating a small area of the casing wall at a time working your way all the way around the casing. You are not testing the whole casing in one shot.
33
4Hi, In case only one condition for table 14 Class II is present like rated pressure is 80% of MAWP however temperature is less than 200 deg C, in that case Inspection Class II will be applicable or notMuhammad UsmanBoth conditions need to apply in order to make Class 2 inspecion mandatory per API610. (So rated pressure >80% of casing MAWP and T>200C)
Of course the customer can overrule this if he wishes and ask for Class 2 inspection at a lower threshold.
34
5Also same question as asked for LPT, is RT done on raw castings or it can be done on machined castings alsoMuhammad UsmanRXE is best carried out at the foundry on the raw casting. It will show all defects within the casting. There would be no benefit to repeating RXE on the finish machined casing as there cannot be any new flaws to uncover.
38
9Also one general question, can we perform the post weld heat treatment of final machined castings like BB3 or BB4 pumps.Muhammad UsmanPost weld heat treatment would normally be carried out before final machining. If you carry out weld repair on a casting you will normally need to perform post weld heat treatment. If the weld repair was on a finish machined casting and is adjacent to a machined surface, it may well require remachining of already machined surfaces as the PWHT may have distorted the case slightly. This might then require weld overlay prior to this remachining.
Sometimes LPE/MPE is carried out on a "nearly finish machined" casing to avoid this risk.
There are also weld procedures available that do not require PWHT
39
10For PT to be applied. Does API 610 allows also to consider Cracking Cromium-Nickel screen (Use of Fluorescent)?Oliver Valadez
40
11LP Root Pass of Full Penetrating Welds. Is that a BPV, API or Customer SpecificationJamie HernandezThis sounds like a customer requirement to me. It is not an API requirement
41
12Is there a rule about the frequency to execute the essays tests?Alexandre Coccia de SouzaThe number and locations of the radiographic or ultrasonic "shots" and areas to carry out LPE or MPE would be agreed in advance with the customer.
Sometimes having agreed in advance "10% of welds to undergo UTE" it will be agreed with the customer inspector on site who might say "let's have shots here, here and here"
42
13Does Helium leak testing is allowed also by API 610?Oliver ValadezI have not come across this requirement for pumps. It is usually applied on items that are hermetically sealed zero leakage. Pumps are controlled leakage not zero leakage.
