How to useEach country is assigned a score from 0 to 1 on each measure. Lower scores are "better" for the pruposes of operating a charity: cheaper to operate in, better availability of talent, law and order, signs of poor health outcomes and extreme poverty. Assign weights to each indicator and identify the best-performing countries in the "Total score" column.

Indicator detailsThe number of SDs above/below the mean total scoreGDP per capita as a proportion of the GDP per capita in the country at the 90th percentile. Capped at 1Broadly, the cost of living as a proportion of the cost of living in the country at the 90th percentile, capped at 1. Some tricks are used to mitigate the lack of a single complete dataset. The average of (1) median income as a proportion of the mean income in the country at the 90th percentile and (2) mean income as a proportion of the mean income in the country at the 90th percentile. All proportions capped at 1. The decile of each country's education rank converted into a number between 0 and 1. The rank is deduced by literacy rates (and where possible also from rank in the Best Countries Report).Countries with high proportions of immigrant populations and high incomes get a boost. There are penalties for high emigration rates and for small countries (as it is easier for these countries to attain high relative immigration rates).Uses ratings on the English Proficiency Index and estimates for the % of the population that are english speakers to create a fairly arbitrary score. Countries with English as the primary official language and >90% English speakers are assigned a score of 0.Take the weighted mean of the corrupton perceptions index scores in the years 2020-2021 (where higher scores indicate less corruption), divide by 100 and subtract from 1.The fragile states index score as a proportion of the highest scoreThe rule of law index subtracted from 1.This is intended to show how tractable it would be to improve health in the country, so less healthy countries croes lower. Take (life expectancy - 40) as a proportion of (life expectancy - 40) for the country at the 90th percentile for life expectancy, then square it. This is intended to reflect the ease of improving health conditions in the country, on the basis that improving life expectancy from 55 to 60 is much easier than from 75 to 80.Create an index proportional to the number of people living on under $1.90 a day, and subtract from 1This is intended to show how impactful interventions affecting the whole country would be, so more populous countries score lower. Take the population as a proportion of the population of the largest country, then subtract from 1. Can be used to approximate the scale of policy change in a given country. Most countries have a score between 0.9 and 1, so this indicator will only differentiate well between countries when given a heavy weighting.

Missing dataMissing countries with population over 2 million: Qatar, Eritrea, Kuwait, Palestine, Oman, Singapore, Libya, Hong Kong, Cuba, Cambodia, North Korea, Saudi ArabiaNew Zealand assigned same median/mean income as South Korea since they are a similar position in global income rankings. Somalia assigned same values as DR Congo.Czech Republic is subjectively given the same score as Slovakia, Republic of the Congo subjectively assigned 0.9, Kiribati & Tuvalu assigned 0.5Gambia assigned same score as Guinea-Bissau75th percentile (roughly equivalent to Indonesia, Morocco)Missing values are assigned the 75th percentile of existing dataMissing values are assigned the 75th percentile of existing dataMissing values are assigned the 75th percentile of existing dataMissing values are assigned the 75th percentile of existing dataThe decile of each country's education rank converted into a number between 0 and 1. The rank is deduced by literacy rates and average years of schooling, with double weighting on years of schooling (where possible, rank in the Best Countries Report is also used).Suriname and Sao Tome & principe assigned poverty rates of 1%, Afghanistan assigned the same rate as YemenNew Zealand population found by googling
