A friend in the pharma industry helped me think through some of the issues. I then saw an article about 1 Day Sooner and signed up | I thought that it would significantly accelerate vaccine development and that would be a great benefit for the world. My expectation is that the most likely outcome would be to spend 2-3 weeks in misery followed by a month or two of recovery. The next most likely outcome is to either get the placebo virus, have the vaccine work or be relatively asymptomatic. I believe there is well less than a 1% mortality risk. The second burden would be being isolated and getting poked and prodded by doctors for a few weeks/months. | getting sick | being poked and prodded by doctors | None to me other than knowing I helped many people avoid getting sick or passing away as well as helping the economy recover and allow people to start doing the things they enjoy sooner. | 4 | 1 in 500 (0.2%) | 6 | 200 | A moderate amount | A moderate amount | 2 | 2 | 1 in 1,000 (0.1%) | 5 | 100 | 5 | 5 | 1 in 100 (1%) | 8 | 1000 | 3 | 3 | 10 in 100 (10%) | 10 | 10000 | 2 | 2 | 1 in 10,000 (0.01%) | 3 | 10 | 2 | 2 | 1 in 5,000 (0.02%) | 4 | 20 | Between 20 million and 50 million infections | 1657344 | 2013772 | Fairly likely | 6 | Fairly likely | 6 | Yes | Wife, a pharma exec and posted on Facebook | people generally seemed to think this made sense when I explained my reasoning. There may be negative effects of the vaccine that may not appear until decades later, such as cancer or shorter lifespan. Also, there may be a risk of unintentionally infecting my husband or others. I would definitely self-quarantine and avoid contact with other people during the clinical trial. But, my husband may catch the infection from me, and he could possibly spread it to others. | I am most concerned about spreading the virus to my husband and other people, and I am very concerned about long-lasting health issues that make me a burden on my loved ones who may need to care for me and pay for care. | I am least concerned about getting infected with the virus, as I consider myself relatively healthy, and I will have better access to healthcare than other people who are not participating in the clinical trial. | I will be doing my part to bring about an effective vaccine for the rest of the world.
