Sections 1118 of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) requires the involvement of parents of participating children in the design and implementation of Title I projects. NCPS Policy 1310/4002 requires every Principal to develop a Parent Engagement Plan as well. A local educational agency may receive funds under this part only if such agency implements programs, activities, and procedures for the involvement of parents in programs assisted under this part consistent with this section. Parents and guardians will be able to access the listed resources on our school’s main website. At the beginning of the school year, during Open House, they will also receive information about district guidelines and North Carolina promotion standards. Students will be assessed using the standards outlined by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, along with other district- or state-mandated assessments (such as Exact Path, NC Check-Ins, common assessments, and End-of-Grade assessments). Assessment results and progress will be reviewed and discussed during parent conferences.

5If requested, schools must provide parents opportunities for regular meetings to formulate suggestions and to participate, as appropriate, in decisions relating to the education of their children, and respond to any such suggestions as soon as practicably possible.

Parents and guardians are strongly encouraged to take an active role in developing their student’s IEP, LEP, 504, ILP, or other support plans. Students who face significant challenges in reading or math will be placed on Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) to provide additional support for academic success. These plans are developed using information from the district’s beginning-of-year assessments, classroom assignments, and teacher observations.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to schedule conferences with their student’s teachers and other relevant staff members as needed. These conferences may be requested at any time but are especially encouraged around progress report and report card dates. Meetings can be arranged through email, phone calls, or the Nash County Public Schools app.

We will actively encourage parents to use the Parent Portal and the Nash County Public Schools app. During Open House, parents were given the opportunity to sign up, download the app, and connect directly with our school. Staff members have also been instructed to maintain regular communication with parents through phone calls, emails, student agendas, and other methods. In addition, ROMS support staff meet with parents and guardians as needed and may refer individual students—and in some cases, families—to outside agencies for additional support.

To support the transition from elementary to middle school, parents and guardians will be invited to attend an Open House where they can meet teachers and learn about school expectations. In the spring semester, a coordinated date will be set for all elementary feeder schools to tour the middle school. Additionally, ROMS will organize visits for 8th graders to NNHS and NCHS and will help promote transition night for these students and their families through the Nash County Public Schools app and school fliers.
