I reflect on colonialism and the awkward/confusing debate on the line between being 'white-washed' (ideologically, believing that the language and values of HK's coloniser trump its original culture) and using our complex, "bicultural" identity to our benefit (of reaching more people, and merely claiming that our bilingual identity is distinct from China).
3Cantonese
It's more specific and real to the majority of Hong Kong people. Most HK people speak English fluently but to speak English in HK still carries weight of privilege in my opinion (and in the world too). I believe the protest is for everyone - it's a fight for fundamental basic human rights and freedoms but I believe all these policies are going to affect local people the most, especially those that are less financially privileged. Those people are not people that have passports to go elsewhere. Cantonese is at the heart of Hong Kong culture. If anything, Cantonese English is a specific kind of English that should really be championed. It's really embedded in our humor as a society.

As a Japanese/Chinese mixed person growing up in an international school in Hong Kong, my English is much better than my Cantonese so I really appreciate being able to share the sentiments behind the music, even while not being a local hker

HK is an international city, it was transformed from a little fishing village. HK’s 7.5 million people’s population has more than 600,000 (10%) holding a foreign passport, Protesting News need to reach them in English or other language is very important, other than the CCP owned HK English Newspaper (SCMP) That include Phillipinos, workers from Indonesia, Nepal or Pakistan, expats from major countries........
I feel the same, to convey the HK Protesting Message

You assuming democracy and "the fight to freedom" as a legitimate revolution is a testament to your own intelligence. I'm a eurasian born and raised here and journalists are not the intellectual authority of politics. Go do some research beyond click bait articles. Bye.
