|Carbon Farm Plan Financial Cost + Return Model|
|This Sheet was designed as a base model to estimate costs and returns associated with implementing a carbon farm plan on a ranch, vineyard or row crop system. Other systems can be modeled, but may require greater personalization by the user. You may model the cost of a single or multiple plans in this Sheet.|
Pre-populated cost data is based on state level NRCS cost scenarios from FY2018. When available you may wish to input local cost data. Columns have been built into this Sheet to accomodate both base NRCS data and customized data input so it is possible to compare side by side or simply use one or the other.
EQIP cost share funding data is provided here as optional and may be selected for inclusion. You may also choose to input other subsidies or cost support values if they are available, for example the price of carbon if you are creating credits or an outside grant monies for implementation.
You may also choose to estimate financial return values based on the estimated increase in yield by crop type resulting from increased soil health brought about by cabon farm plan implementation. You will need to know your current units of production per acre and the market value of the unit. Basic production and value data can be obtained in your County Crop Report availble online.

|1) Make a copy of the Model|

|2) Plan: parameterize your model (required)|
|To parameterize the model you will need to make custom selections in tabs 2 and 4. Tab 3 is optional and Tab 5 requires input for compost price, all other practic costs may be modified but are optional|
|Starting in the "Plan" tab add the name of your operation in column "A".|
|If you plan on developing carbon credits, mitigation payment or other monies please list the dollar amount per ton of carbon which will be received by the producer in column "B"|
|In column "C" choose your crop type/s. To estimate financial benefits from increased soil health you will need the following: total units of your operations annual production column "D" and cost or value per unit column "E". *** Please note: you may wish to change the estimated percent increase of yeild by going to the Settings tab and inputing percentage. You may also add crop type in the same tab. Citations for assumped yield benefits are sited in tab 2.|
|3) Fields: select the number of fields you wish to model (optional)|
|In the Fields tab input the name of your ranch or farm in column "A" .|
|Input the number of fields contained in your plan in column "B". Fields are optional and not nescessary to run analysis. Breaking up practices and costs by fields can help prioritize investment and implementation.|
|You may also choose to add soil type in this tab. This sheet does not calculate water holding capacity but you may add your desired WHC % by soil type and build your own calculation in this column.|
|4) Practices: select the practices you will be implementing (required)|
|In column "A" select the ranch name/s|
|In column "B" select each field or area per your operation (if you are working with fields).|
|Select the practices you plan to implement on each field in column "C". |
Click on column "C" and a drop down menu of NRCS COMET Planner practices will appear. Scroll down to find the appropriate practice. Populate column "C" until all the practices recomended in your plan are listed. Please note, *Compost application on grazed rangeland is not yet an approve NRCS conservation practice, but has been built into the dropdown menu for selection. You will need to populate this practice with local cost data as there is no corresponding NRCS cost data as of 2018.
In column "D" select the amount associated with the practice ie "acres", "acre feet", etc. The unit type will be populated automatically, however you will need to input the total amount of units per practice from your plan.
|In the columns listed under "Funding" select the funds you anticipate recieving and for each practice and by each funding type listed.|
|In the columns listed under "Benefits" you may choose to input pre calculated values or build in equations per regional factors.|
|To estimate carbon sequestration per practice use COMET Planner. Input your total carbon by practice in Column "F" ***note that this tool does NOT automatically calculate carbon, however you may modifiy it with custom emissions factors or reference COMET.|
|The "Costs" will be visible in the red columns to the right. DO NOT MODIFY these. Should you wish to modify unit costs please do so in the Component Costs tab 5.|
|5) Component Costs: review and modify component costs associated with each practice (required for compost, optional for other practices)|
|For compost applicaiton you will need to input local costs in column "H"|
|This tab daylights the assumptions used by NRCS regarding compenets of each practice and their associated costs. If you wish to change component costs within a practice do so in this tab.|
|6) Summary by Practice: your estimated costs by practice are sumarized here (final output)|
|Costs are calculated both in total, and in net of eligible EQIP, CA Healthy Soils or other funding values you have selected.|
Returns (CO2e sequstration, SOM, WHC and forage increases) are measured both in terms of total amounts, and dollar cost per unit of benefit.
