Depends on what is that friend looking for. If they are looking to expand their taste, I'll find unique music. If they just want to know similar songs to what they like, then I suppose it needs to sound similar.

What mood I am in at the time I’m listening to the playlist

I generally consider genre, tempo, and mood, depending on the purpose and/or vibe of the playlist. I also tend to group playlists by the release dates of the songs, so I have playlists organized by genre and also by time period.

I first consider whether I like it or not, and then I consider whether I think they will like it or not. I also think about the novelty/uniqueness of the song -- whether I've heard it before or not.

In making the playlist I consider if the song sounds like the previous sound (sonically similar) and the "vibe." Oftentimes this is instrumentation (bass, vocals, guitar, etc.) or energy level.

For recommending to a friend I go off of my preference. The artists broadly seem similar enough so I'll just pick my favorite song by the new artist.

I think energy and speed seem to be most important in making this decision, but in rock I think the instrument mix is very important.

I don't usually make my own playlists, but the satellite radio channels I listen to are mostly grouped by genre and time period (except the Beatles, Bruce Springsteen Grateful Dead, and Phish channels, which are obviously grouped by artist). I would give genre and time period priority over artists in making a playlist, though.

Sounds, genres, and time periods I think they like. Then I try to consider what sound of the artist I want to recommend fits that in some ways (but not necessarily all).

I didn't necessarily agree with some of the genre categorizations in the study, but I also consider myself somewhat unusual in terms of music preferences. I also found the labels of songs and artists slightly confusing or nondescript when it came to answering the questions; it took about two groups of questions for me to get more of a hang of things.

I approached the questions of "which would you select for the playlist" in terms of which I thought fit best with the first song, which I often judged based on acoustic similarity. The same logic applied for which I would recommend to a friend. Often, though I preferred the other song because I liked it better than both A1 and B1. But as it relates to the success of a playlist algorithm, I might not have chosen song A1 to begin with.

Trying to create songs that are aesthetically different, but aren't thematically different; they shouldn't be similar enough for it to be boring, but it should also contribute to an overall mood.

The effect the song has - like whether a song can express genuine emotion. (I don't really look at specific genres, or what my friend might like necessarily, or anything like that - I just try to find songs that don't seem common for their genre.)

My definition of "Rock" and "Pop" seem to be wildly different from what was assumed for this survey. That's not a bad thing, just an observation! I knew almost none of the artists or songs I listened to.

That way when I'm deciding what I want to listen to I know all of the songs will make sense together for my particular preference in that moment.

I think the style of the song is most important and whether or not it fits my friends' musical styles. I only recommend songs or artists to friends when I really know its the type of music that they would be into or if I think its a really well produced song because then I feel like even if its not their style they will still be able to appreciate the artistry.

I think I consider how well they would play after each other, so I considered how Song 1A left me feeling and then which one would pick up best after that.

Depends on what type of music they like and whether I think the songs fit their preferences. If it's something outside of their usual favorites, I usually recommend songs with strong bass lines and background beats that are stuck in my head.

I tend to think about the vibe of the song. Although sometimes with playlists, it is about different iterations of the same topic or emotion, but I try to streamline the iteration/subtopic. Thinking about things like is the instrumentation kind of similar, does the beat goes as hard or take you on the same kind of trip, how is the artist delivering their voice, etc.

I try to think about the kind of music they like or the kind of music we listen to when we're together, and try not to deviate too much from that. Thinking about things that remind me of them or things we've talked about or what message they need to hear, and combining those needs with the aforementioned is most important.

I think mostly about the beat of the song, kind of like my response to the first question -- I guess to reduce it down to one thing, it would be the mood as reflected by the tempo.

Background timbres like strings, synth, or bass lines also seem to set the mood but more subconsciously.

If one of the B songs is coming from a recommendation algorithm, it seems to be doing a really good job. I got 'Here comes the sun' as an A song, and the first few seconds of one of the B songs was super similar in timbre, and even the panning ( in both songs the guitar was panned way left )

I'm usually looking for songs that have the same feel. Tempo/energy is particularly important as I prefer not to have high energy songs mixed with low energy songs.

Most of my playlists are just compilations of songs I like from a certain time frame of my life, so they span multiple genres. I like making playlists that have odd things in common such as all having a year for the title, or songs that remind me of dogs and video games. Sometimes I make playlists that remind me of the dynamics of a character pairing from a show, movie, or book; for those, the lyrical content and mood and the dynamic portrayed in each song and possibly played out in the imagined narrative of multiple songs is important to me. In general I like putting together songs that are sonically similar and portray a certain mood, or tell a certain story.

I decide to recommend songs to friends when the artist has interesting and pleasant musical production, and I like spreading the word about artists that I become attached to because I have learned more about their background, if they are aiming to portray a certain message as artists that is not always present in the mainstream, and if they are overall interesting people that I feel are worth knowing. Sometimes this is clear enough through their music and lyrics, or their live performances. I often only recommend artists to friends if I feel like the friend is already open to exploring that particular genre of music. Like I recommend punk rock bands to my friends who have a history of listening to pop rock, or if I know a friend really enjoys music from artists that identify as LGBT I love sharing music by other LGBT artists that I think they should know about.

I can usually compare artists that are acoustically similar by the type and amount of instrumentation they use in their songs. as well as the tempo or if the songs use similar chord progressions or rhythms that convey a similar mood. I also think about the time period in which the music was created because songs often sound similar when coming from the same region and time period, and when a modern song does actually sound similar to one from the 80s or early 2000s I can usually generally pick out the decade it sounds similar to for me.

I usually consider what genre they listen to and pick a song that fits in that artistic realm. I listen to a lot of progressive metal so I tend to mostly only make those types of recommendations.

I look for BPM, if it's a loud/quiet song, and how large the range of the notes are.

When picking a playlist for me it's less about finding multiple songs that tie back to a single song or artist, it's more about finding songs that fit within that genre.
