Quiet Areas

The zoo has designated “Quiet Areas” throughout the park. These areas typically have less activity and spaces to sit and regroup after becoming overstimulated.
Quiet Areas are in the following locations: Andean condor habitat, Outside Galapagos tortoise habitat, Grizzly Ridge overlook, Lehner Family Zoo Gardens terrace

Headphone Zones

We have identified areas that are noisy from guests or animals, crowded and where guests tend to linger as “Headphone Zones.”
These areas include: Madagascar Circle, Carousel plaza, Komodo Kingdom Education Center, Otter slide area, Pride of Africa train depot, Pride of Africa area near lions and misters, Wild Asia plaza, Wild Asia treehouse area

Both the Quiet Areas and Headphone Zones are marked with signage and labeled on the Akron Zoo map.

The most powerful aspect of the sensory inclusion program is the continued staff training. All of our staff participate in training sessions designed to raise their awareness of sensory processing disorders, inform them about the services provided through the sensory inclusion program and discuss strategies that they can implement in their daily work to help the Akron Zoo reach its goal to be “sensory inclusive.”

Zoothing Hours

The Akron Zoo offers various dates throughout the year called Zoothing Hour. The Akron Zoo opens an hour early for guests with different abilities who do not like loud noises and/or crowds. During Zoothing Hour, guests will have the opportunity to enjoy the zoo before it opens to the public at 10 a.m.

The zoo also offers a time during Boo at the Zoo called Zoothing Boo at the Zoo where guests with different abilities can purchase a special ticket to get into Boo at the Zoo an hour early to trick-or-treat.

Service Dogs Guidelines: https://www.alabamagulfcoastzoo.com/uploads/AGCZServiceDogGuidelinesMar2019.pdf

To visit the zoo with a service dog requires an appointment made 24 hours in advance through our guest services in the gift shop. Please call 251-968-5732. All guests with a service dog must be accompanied by a zoo staff member. The dog must be on a leash or harness no longer than 4 feet in length at all times and never left unattended anywhere in the park. Please alert any zoo staff member immediately should your dog get loose or you need other assistance in attending to your animal. On warm weather days, we ask that you please keep your dog well hydrated. We also provide many shaded rest areas.

Even in areas that are not restricted to service dogs, a zoo animal may react in an unusual way that may appear harmless but could be a stress reaction. We ask that you move along quickly out of sight of that animal or comply with a request from our staff to do so. A zoo is filled with new and unfamiliar stimuli to dogs, and even the most well-behaved and well-trained dog can react, especially to the many free-roaming large birds wandering throughout the park. We also have
educational animal shows and encounters that bring zoo animals very close to guests and we ask for extreme precaution in keeping your service dog under control. Please promptly request assistance from our staff should you need to remove your service dog from any situation that could be disruptive or potentially dangerous.

No information provided by facility. ADA-recognized service animals are permitted in public areas of all BioPark facilities, unless otherwise restricted. See official service animal policy.

https://www.cabq.gov/artsculture/biopark/documents/biopark-service-animals-policy-and-map_updated-2022.pdf

The Albuquerque BioPark welcomes visitors with service animals. The Albuquerque BioPark recognizes service
animals as dened by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). (The ADA denes service animals as dogs that
are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities), and the state Service Animal
Act. Pets, therapy animals, and comfort animals are not service animals under the ADA or state law, Section
28-11-2, NMSA 1978;** therefore, they are not allowed. The Albuquerque BioPark is committed to certain
precautions that will ensure the visit is safe for everyone, including the animals. Service animals must be well
trained, accustomed to being in the public, stay calm and quiet beside their handler, clean without oensive
odors, and housebroken. Please take a few minutes to review the following material. Pursuant to New Mexico
law, it is a crime to misrepresent any non-service animal as a legally protected service animal. The penalty for
such misrepresentation is a ne of not more than $1,000 and a jail sentence of not more than a year. (31-19-1
NMSA 1978)

OFF LIMIT AREAS: The BioPark restricts access to public areas in which the use of a qualied service animal
poses a threat of harm to health or safety. Certain Zoo exhibits are permanently o-limits to service animals.
Service animals may be seen as predators and in some circumstances as prey. Because of this, some Zoo
animals may react adversely and cause harm to themselves and others. The o limit areas are identied as The
Cat Walk and the Nature Theatre during live bird shows. There are also times when an exhibit may be temporarily closed to service animals due to an illness or after the birth of a new animal. Zoo sta will post any such temporary closures.

STRESS REACTION: Zoo animals may experience a stress reaction to a service animal even in exhibits that are
not specically o-limits to service animals. Sometimes these may appear harmless or even amusing. If a Zoo
animal responds to your service animal with any unusual behavior, we request that you move along quickly to
minimize stress on the Zoo animal and to your service animal. Sta may also request that you promptly move
on if they notice stress signals from a Zoo animal. NOTE: Service animals must be on a leash (or harness)
measuring four feet or less in length at all times and not be left unattended. An exception is made if the
handler is unable to use such devices due to their disability or if it would interfere with the trained task(s) the
service animal performs.

BEHAVIOR ISSUES: There are times when even the most well-behaved service animal has an adverse reaction
to the new stimuli and may become dicult for its handler to control. Sta may request that a service animal
experiencing diculty be removed from the Zoo immediately. We ask that you promptly comply with any
such request for the safety and welfare of all.

ACCOMMODATION: If you have a disability and require additional accommodations, please see the BioPark
administrative oce for assistance.

Residents of Rapides Parish, with a current library card, can check out Zoo Memberships from their local library to be borrowed for two weeks at a time. During this time, 2 adults and up to 4 children can enter the zoo during regular daytime hours at no cost to them.

Presenting a Rapides Parish Library membership card allows for a discounted fee for participation in our monthly Stroller Safari a premium experience for children birth to 5 years old and their caregivers. This event requires registration and is an additional $5 per a family (2 adults and 1 child) plus an extra $2 for each additional child with a Zoo Membership.
No information provided by facility. While pets are not allowed at the zoo, we welcome Service Animals as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act’s regulations.

While your service animal has been prepared for most public settings, touring a zoo can be an unusual experience. We ask that service animal handlers be observant of their animal’s behavior and the behaviors of zoo animals, and adjust your time at exhibits accordingly for the well-being of zoo residents.

Per the ADA, service animals may be excluded if their presence alters the nature of the Zoo’s services or if the animal is out of the owner’s control. If a service animal is excluded, the owner will be able to visit without the service animal.

Because we are subject to strict regulations regarding the protection and well-being of our Zoo animals, service animals are not permitted in the Aussie Aviary experience.

Alexandria Zoo has a miniature train for visitors’ enjoyment. Hours of operation vary seasonally and for maintenance.

The train takes visitors on a trip along the outer loop of the zoo; providing opportunities to see habitats from a unique view. The train ride starts at the Train Station, just past the entrance to Land of the Jaguar, and takes a single loop around the Zoo, ending in the same place. The seating benches are 42” wide, and are 28” deep from the backrest-to-backrest. Boarding the train requires visitors to step up 21” and to clear a 14”w x 51”h entry into the car. Guests under 42 inches in height must be accompanied by a responsible adult. This is a ticketed experience and tickets can be purchased at the ticket window or through the Zootique.

The train has an accessible train car that can accommodate 1 wheelchair at a time. The accessible car is 58″ long and 42″ wide. Boarding the train using our accessible ramp requires visitors to clear a 32”w x 51”h entry into the car. To use the accessible train car, speak to an employee who will assist you in boarding the car up a ramp and securing the wheelchair using wheel locks.

Note: the train produces artificial chugging noises, an artificial train whistle sound, and will sound a bell at every train crossing. In addition, the train may produce loud grinding noises against the tracks. Guests with sensitivity to loud noises may become uncomfortable during the train ride.
