Seal Parish Registers
2
3
The original Seal parish registers are kept at the Kent History and Library Centre in Maidstone where electronic copies can be read on a computer.
4
The registers up to 1812 were transcribed by Thomas Colyer-Fergusson and typed up in two books. Book 2 was completed in 1925 and covers the years 1654/55 to 1812; book 1 was completed in 1933 and covers the years 1561 to 1654/55.
5
The registers from 1813 to 1925 for marriages and burials and 1965 for baptisms were transcribed by Margaret and Walter Stevens in the 1990s (referred to as Book 3).
6
7
This transcription onto excel spreadsheets has been done by Val Brown and David Williams.

There are several gaps in the earlier years, sometimes because pages have been torn out.
31
32
The present transcribers have tended to:-
33
- leave christian names and surnames as transcribed except that names which are conventionally shortened have usually been transcribed in full.
34
- anglise names written in Latin.
35
- use modern spellings of places and occupations where these can be identified.
36
37
If the parent's name (where only one is give) appears to be female it is assumed that there is no father and the child was base born.
38
Titles which come at the end such as 'Esq', 'Knight' or 'Gent' and additions such as 'Jnr' or 'the younger' have been included with the family name.
39
Leading titles such as 'Sir' are included before the christian name.
40
41
This workbook consists of four worksheets in addition to this introduction; an alphabetical index and worksheets for baptisms, marriages and burials.
42
The index includes the names in the registers of the person being baptised, married or buried and the reference is to the numbered line of the relevant worksheet.
43
The worksheets have been locked so that content cannot be changed but searchers will be able to hide rows and columns, change the size of rows and columns, use filters and change the size of print areas.
