12/31/2009 23:12:48Katie CarterThe performances in this movie were definitely some of the best of the year, but I thought the movie was too stereotypical of African-Americans. I felt like it was saying that every black teen who lives in Harlem is poor, has families who don't care about them, and can't read or write well, which isn't true. Besides this detail, it's a powerful film.

6/22/2010 22:33:50Kelly PappageorgeI have to disagree about Precious being a stereotypical film about African-Americans. If anything, the film is about breaking the cycle of incest not just in the African-American community, but in all poor communities. In a year that The Blind Side won best picture, in which a white family adopts a black young man, and "rescues him," one can hardly say that Precious is backwards. You do bring up the element of race in the mentor. It is interesting that all of the mentors in Precious' life are biracial. I still haven't put that entirely together. I dig the website!
