Ladies and gentlemen of the board, thank you for the opportunity to speak. I have lived in this beautiful city since the day I was born, and have watched it grow into a place I can be truly proud to call home.
I would like to believe that Little Rock is more than a thriving place of incredible natural beauty, however--I would like to believe that every one of its 193,524 citizens can expect nothing less than equal protection and justice under its laws. I have had my faith in our system shaken as of late, however. Before I came here today, I was hungry. I wanted to sample some of the fantastic, world-class fare we can find in the heart of our dear city, but I went to Taco Bell instead. I paid sales tax on two fresco bean burritos, and the thought that the money from my own pocket could be used to tear my fellow citizens from their homes is unnerving enough--that such an action could be enacted by a private, unelected board is frankly terrifying. If we allow this, we are setting a dangerous precedent for the future. What is to stop such interests from going after other neighborhoods for the crime of being too poor and disenfranchised to fight back? What is to stop such a board from taking my family's house in Ward 3 should it suit their interests? Most of all, what will happen when the people of Little Rock see with their own eyes that we have barely moved beyond 1957--that equality and justice comes only to those who can afford it?
Thankfully, there is a solution. This ordinance can stop this impending tragedy in its tracks. As a lifelong resident of Little Rock with a vested interest in its future, I implore you to adopt it. A society denied justice becomes a darker and more dangerous place to live in. In the ancient words of Aristotle, "At his best, man is the noblest of all animals; separated from law and justice he is the worst."
Please don't deny us justice today.
