Molecular Clocks: Proteins That Evolve at Different Rates SC.BS.5.1A good resource for connecting molecular biology and evolution. Specifically it uses variations in proteins among organisms to estimate time of divergence from a common ancestor. This resource is not to be used with students that are struggling with the basics of DNA and is functions.NA32
3
An Origin of SpeciesSC.BS.5.1Good resource for extensions on evolutions. Relevant for Hawaii, showing adaptive radiation of silverswords, fruitflies, and honeycreepers. Some nice interactives showing a mainland bird blown onto various islands during a large storm and students can track environmental, and competitive changes over a 5 million year period. No specific questions or assessments are on the site, but there are many other links related to evolution.NA22
4
Lessons for today in ancient Mass Extinctions SC.BS.5.1Nice video on fossils and extinctions that also makes links to why understanding past extinctions could help us nderstand current extinction threats. Nice explanation of hypotheses to test on ancient mass extinctions. Many links to articles that can be useful for CCSS argument standards.NA22
5
Tracing Human Evolution to Its Roots SC.BS.5.1Excellent resource for human evolution. Includes alignment to national science standards. Includes questions to be used for formative or summative assessment. The drawback was that I couldn't access trhe supplemental media files through "Teacher's Domain".NA32
6
The evidence lines up in early mammal evolution SC.BS.4.6 & SC.BS.5.2Good resource. Tied to CCSS Argument Anchor Standard. Provides nice supplemental information on phylogeny and clades. There are good article links that can be used for students to read and write arguments. There are also skeletal reconstructions based on the fossils. The questions provided in the lesson are rigorous and require higher level, critical thinking.NA22
7
Acidic Oceans Prompt EvolutionSC.BS.3.1This is a good resource to examine data related to ocean acidification. It presents data to see if important protist primary producers can adapt to increased ocean acidification. It includes primary research papers on the subject that can be used for implementing CCSS Science Literacy Standards. The average student will require teacher support and facilitation for this unit to be useful. Nice supplemental resources on natural selection, artificial selection, evolution and global warming. NA22
8
Reebops SC.BS.5.4Good hands-on activity that allows students to explore basic Mendelian Genetic principles including punnet squares, chromosomes, meiosis, alleles, phenotypes and genotypes The lab requires simple supplies and is easy to re-use after initial prep. NA33
9
In Sickness and in Health: A Trip to the Genetic Counselor SC.BS.5.5This lesson covers human chromosomal disorders using a case study that requires students to create a pedigree based on the provided narrative. This leeson covers types of chromosomal disorders as well as providing guiding questions to facilitate discussions concerning ethics involved in genetic disorders. NA22
10
Classifying Animals by Appearance Versus DNA SequenceSC.BS.4.6 & SC.BS.5.3This resource focuses on the difference of using physical characterstics (qualitative) to DNA sequence (quantitative) to create phylogenetic trees. The resource explains the purpose of phylogenetic trees. The video is a little long and dry, but is interactive if the accessory handouts are ready for students. Students practice filling in phylogenetic trees based on physical characteristics and DNA sequences. This resource could be used with the entire class or individual students that require enrichment activities. Video and handouts are downloadable.NA33
11
The Impact of Technology: SocietySC.BS.2.1 & SC.BS.2.2Short video that is a good starting point for discussion on technology's impact on society. This is a good starting point for an assignment on CCSS Scientific literacy through argumentation. The tradeoffs of technological advancements are introduced. There is a background essay and discussion questions included. NA33
