Safe Assign Plagarism Software9/14/10 - Finalized Pilot access issues to the Building block. Recruiting at least one faculty member from each division to pilot for Fall. Will compile notes and determine recommendation at the end of Fall quarter.Seems much more nicely integrated into blackboard;
Cost is "free" with our licence: "SafeAssign is available for Blackboard enterprise clients at no additional cost.";
Seems to have a smaller database for comparing student papers; not as feature rich as turnitInDeb Hysellhttp://safeassign.com/

Blackboard Mobile Learn7/27/10 -
Have installed the free building block on Blackboard so all NCSC Blackboard content should now be accessable to all mobile devices with the Blackboard Mobile Learn App installed
Allows Blackboard content to be accessible to students and faculty on most popular current mobile devices (iPad/iPod touch/iPhone, Droid & Blackberry);
Allows students and faculty to actually *use* Blackboard and post etc. from their mobile devices;
Can potentially make class materials more convenient to students
No accessibility on non high end smart phones;
Students-Faculty have to be able to find the App and install and configure it on their devices;
Some areas of BB sites (discussion board) have small text on smaller screen devices;
Report of an issue with the Droid App (Researching & troubleshooting this at present);
9/13/10 - Access down - have support ticket into Blackboard to resolve.

Blackboard Sync8/10/10 -
Building Block installed on NCSC Blackboard server. Research details on how to securely launch and make available for FaceBook integration while protecting/addressing student privacy concerns. Will be sending out a call for pilot volunteers for Fall shortly.
"Blackboard Sync enables students to connect with their classmates through Facebook, thus creating social learning opportunities. Students can easily find classmates from their Blackboard course sites who are on Facebook, access their profiles to learn more about them and even join networks or form groups online or offline, to collaborate and study together."Privacy concerns;
Security concerns;
Concerns on Student uptake of School infringing on their private Social sphere

TurnitIn Plagarism Detection SoftwareSpring Quarter 2010 -
Per request from the English Department, arranged for a free 3 month pilot of using TurnItIn Plagarism detection Plugin for Blackboard. used in Engligh and History online courses for Spring Quarter. Based on pilot faculty feedback, need to look at and do a further pilot with different vendors.
Has an *extensive* and broad database of student papers, online sources, journals etc. to check student work against;
Very user-friendly "originality report" on student papers;
Can set multiple parameters for level and type of suspicious passages:
Can be made transparent to the students with an option to let them see the originality report as well;
Integrated into Blackboard;
It might be more helpful as we build up a database of our own students' papers.
Student Privacy Concerns;
Legal concerns - training faculty to utilize appropriately;
If parameters not set correctly, do not get too useful originality reports;
Student files have to be submitted in specific and limited variety of file formats;
It reported many false positives;
did not report a couple of cases of definite plagiarism;
Could not enter comments on individual papers through usual blackboard interface;
Student papers kept on Turnitin server and now unavailble after free trial
