It all happened right after David Thompson left the Hudson Bay Company and went to work for the Northwest Company. The video explained what he did (Built trading posts till the rockies) and how he went to the Pacific. Later on, the two copanies eventualy combines to one which was controlled by George Simpson. All I know about him is that he had closed down 73 trading posts and he had a secret character book (Diary). Soon after, the gold rush started and lasted for 8 years. 4 | 3/2/2010 16:34:39 | In the moives first half it fallow the life of a man named David thomas. He was a orphan who always dreamed of becoming a great exsplorer and one day he was offered a job in the new world by the hudson bay company to be a clerk there. He excepted and quickly adapted to the harsh conditions. He gets send on a mission to the britsh columbia and get stopped by the mowhawk this is one of is bigger journeys. IN spring everything begins including his apprenticeship and at this time natives trade animal pelt for guns and cloth. at this time two of the largest companies where at war with eachother the northwesters who appeared out of nowhere and the Hudson Bay Company which has been around for your and the Northwesters started to become a imanent threat to the Hubson Bay Company. | In the second part of this video it fallows David Thomas even further into his life. HE started to make maps according to the stars and made some of the most famous and percice ones at that time also after this time he succumed toa nick name "the man who looked at stars". 5 | 3/2/2010 17:41:42 | Joanna Leung New France had originally relied on the fur trade with the natives until Pierre Radisson and his brother-in-law proposed a plan to expand to the west(Lake Superior). The governor of New France rejected this, so the brothers brought their idea to King Charles II of Britain. The Hudson Bay Company was, therefore, created. After 50 years, New Frace started setting up their own trading posts to get the best fur before the British. Samuel H. travelled northwest, led by an Indian, on an expedition to find coppermines but he didn't succeed. Scotts soon took over the French trading routes and formed Northwest Company, who controlled 80% of the fur trade. HBC started to head into the new parts of the continent in search of new routes. David Thompson started his journey west when he was done with the HBC. Alexander Mackenzie, who was part of the NWC, tried to reach the Pacific through Peace River but was blocked by the coastal Indians. | Joanna Leung In 1797, Thompson left HBC, and went to NWC for they offered him better income and allowed him to finish his map. By 1810, he built up posts in the Rockies for NWC. Then, he was ordered to travel to the Pacific on land because the Americans were travelling by ship to get to the Columbia River. Thompson had troubles with the natives and had to detour into new territories, using the Athabasca River. After 3 months, he reached the crest of the mountains, the route later used by fur traders for half a century. The Americans had reached the river first and built and fort. Thompson claimed lands he travelled for NWC and Britain. Meanwhile, the land along the Red River was used by Metis buffalo hunters for the NWC, but Selkirk started to bring in settlers. Later, HBC ordered the people to have no export on any items, which blocked supplies for NWC and drove them out of HBC territory. Violence broke out between the two sides. At Seven Oaks, Metis and natives fought against each other. The two companies merged as HBC in 1821. George Simpson of HBC(Little Emperor)reorganized HBC's domain and closed 73 posts and cut down half the workers. Later, a native drank water from a river and discovered gold. 450 prospectors arrived to Fort Victoria from San Francisco. Gold Rush doubled the population in one day. James Douglas acted as governor and issued licenses to people. In 1858, the HCB land became British colony, which was known as British Columbia. Barkerville, a town, sprang up north of San Francisco. The gold rush lasted 8 years. | Joanna Leung

7 | 3/2/2010 20:14:11 | The main point of the first part of the video is the fur trade. The fur trade was a major part of early Canadian times. I believe this because, through HBC and NorthWestern Trading Company, Canadas population skyrocketed up due to the increase in fur traders and trading outposts. Also, because of the two companies and increased number of trade outposts, the Native People of Canada also came to trade at the tradiing posts. They traded for things like guns, alcohal, blankets, and clothes. | There are two main points to part two of the video. The first is the merging of the two trading companies. I believe this is very important because it truly shaped the future of Canada through makin two seperate compeating companies and making them a whole. The second biggest event in my opinion is the Gold Rush. I believe this because, without the Gold Rush, British Columbia may have never accumulated the population that it has now. Those are the two biggest events of the video. | Jared Alexander Kingston

11 | 3/2/2010 21:21:31 | The Hudson's Bay Company had a monopoly over the fur trade and sent out people to establish trading connections. They had strong competition though. They were the North West Company. Not only were they great traders but they had explored parts of Canada that The Hudson's Bay Company hadn't. Alexander Mackenzie was part of the North West Company. Mackenzie's discovery of a new fur trade route was impractical and couldn't be used. So it seems strange that he would become famous and wealthy. | David Thompson created a map of what is present day British Columbia. He also claimed the land as that of his country's. I think what he accomplished was of great importance to the shaping of modern day Canada. Also, he vowed to never trade fur for alcohol between the Native's. Because he believed that drunkenness was not something that should be encouraged. The land that Thomas Douglas owned was beginning to be used by settler's from Scotland and Ireland. This angered the North Wester's as well as the Metis. War broke out between the two groups. The Metis burnt down the settlements and killed all of the new settler's. Canada was still controlled by the fur it offered, and it would stay this way for many years to come. | Michael Johnson

13 | 3/2/2010 22:02:36 | David Thompson at 14 years old started a 7 year apprenticeship, learns the natives language and the way of survival. French traders continued to trade with the Natives in Montreal until 1759. The Natives formed the Northwest Company. The Hudson Bay Company's biggest competition is the Northwest Company. The European traders brought disease(small pox) with them, infecting the Natives. Small pox killed half of the Native population. David Thompson was known as "the man who looks at stars", he as known as the greatest map maker. | David Thompson had been with the Hudson Bay Company for 13 years and in order for him to comeback to HBC, David had to focus on the fur trade. Instead David accepts an offer from the Northwest Company, which payed more than the HBC. David goes to Columbia. While in Columbia, David and his men were in Pagan territory. One of his men fires a bullet which attracts the Pagan's to them. David and his men find out that the Pagan's had blocked his route. So David and his crew had to go through the Athabaskan Mountains. After 3 months David gets to the crest of the mountain. David discovers a trade route and gets to the pacific ocean. David starts the map of the great Northwest. By 1812, Lord Selkirk bought one third of the Hudson Bay Company and 116,000 sq foot of land near a river. The first Selkirk settlers arrive at Red River. | Danial Rado

He and his men are attacked at Bloody Falls. Tho North West Company arise and HBS moves inland. The Piegan found tents and think its a trap but they attack but all they found was dying and dead bodies, they strip them of their infected clothing and bring it back with them to their village. Soon the Piegan have many of their people suffering and dying from smallpox but it vanished after a long period of time. 18 | 3/2/2010 23:48:51 | David thompson, Hbc clerk David Thompson’s achievements as an explorer and surveyor have earned him the reputation as one of the best pioneering geographers in Canadian history. Each day, regardless of where he found himself, he would faithfully write down the latitude, longitude, temperature and the geographical characteristics of his location. In this way he mapped almost half of North America between the 46th and 60th parallels, from the St.Lawrence and Great Lakes all the way to the Pacific. Pierre-Esprit Radisson (1636 - 1710) and Médard Chouart, Sieur des Groseilliers (1618 - 1710), were the first Europeans to penetrate deep into the forest belt of the North, to negotiate treaties with the Cree, to explore the upper reaches of the Mississippi and Missouri, and to establish the durable trading pattern responsible for creation of the Hudson's Bay Company. Des Groseilliers & Radisson, fur trade, Charles II created HBC In 1659 des Groseilliers, along with Radisson, his young brother-in-law, set out for the upper Great Lakes basin, despite the fact that the Marquis d'Argenson, Governor of New France, would not issue them a trading licence. There the two wintered, meeting and trading with the First Nations. The following year they returned with a cargo of prime furs only to be charged with illicit trading. The Governor confiscated most of their furs, fined them and briefly jailed des Groseilliers. The First Nations people were the earliest explorers of this region more than 8000 years ago, gradually settling and building their communities. In the seventeenth century, the French travelled up the St. Lawrence and explored the region in hopes of tapping into the lucrative fur trade, spreading the French Empire in North America and finding the Pacific route to Asia. They formed alliances— political, commercial, military, as well as marital—with the First Nations people, who provided expertise about the land, waterways, and difficulties of living in this environment and climate. Western Interior, Pierre de la Vérendrye La Vérendrye, Pierre Gaultier de Varennes et de, military officer, farmer, fur trader, explorer (b at Trois-Rivières 17 Nov 1685; d at Montréal 5 Dec 1749). The expeditions organized by La Vérendrye and spearheaded by his sons were the first to open the country from Lk Superior to the lower Saskatchewan R and the Missouri R to the French fur trade. | A Journey to the North Samuel Hearne was an explorer, fur trade, author, and naturalist. He was the first European to make an overland excursion across northern Canada to the Arctic Ocean. In 1774 Hearne built Cumberland House for the Hudson’s Bay Company, its first interior trading post and the first permanent settlement in present Saskatchewan. After some elementary education, Hearne joined the Royal Navy in 1756 as midshipman under the fighting captain Samuel Hood. He remained with Hood during the Seven Years' War, seeing considerable action during the conflict, including the bombardment of Le Havre. At the end of the Seven Years' War, having served in the English Channel and then the Mediterranean, he left the navy in 1763. His activities during the next three years are unknown. The nor westeries The settlement, physically begun in 1812 by a small party of servants headed by its ‘governor’, Miles Macdonell , never became a formal colony of Great Britain. Its early years were fraught with conflict, as it inevitably became involved in the fur trade war between the HBC and the NWC for control of the West. The problem of feeding the settlers Selkirk was shipping to Red River from the Highlands of Scotland led Macdonell to prohibit the export of pemmican from the region in 1814 . This action led the NWC to entice most of the settlers, who were extremely unhappy with the primitive conditions under which they lived, to move to Upper Canada in 1815 and to drive the remainder out of the area. Led by the fur trader Colin Robertson , a rump of settlers returned to the forks in August 1815 and were joined in September by another contingent from Scotland led by Governor Robert Semple. In The Shadow Of The Rockies A boy of seventeen, developed an obsession for the game of checkers, which he learned to play with his companions in the trading post: the resident, the assistant, the steward and the crew of a dozen men waiting in idleness for the ice to break up on the river. He became expert at both the twelve-man and the twenty- four-man boards, and when no one would play with him he practised intensely against himself. His name was David Thompson, and he later became the greatest surveyor of the northern plains; his Great Map, which hangs in the Archives of Ontario, describes the vast territory with which he became intimate over a long life, from the shores of Hudson Bay to the Pacific Ocean, the Athabasca River to the Missouri. The Voyageurs Daniel Harmon was an educated young man from Vermont who became a fur trader with the North West Company and married a Métis woman in the early 1800s. He signed on with the North West Company as a clerk at the age of 21. A month after Harmon arrived in Grand Portage, he and his travelling party headed west - deep into the heart of Cree and Assiniboine country. The Winterer David Harmon entered into a "country" marriage with a Métis woman and had 12 children while working as a fur trader in the western territories. Most winterers found companionship with the local native women.Country marriages,as they were called, cemented trading alliances. Two years into his stay, a Cree Chief offered Daniel Harmon one of his daughters. Looking at the stars Over the years, the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) made periodic requests to the school for students to be apprenticed to the North American fur trade. Many of these students would later receive training from Philip Turnor, the HBC's first chief surveyor. Among these pupils were Joseph Hansom, George Hudson, John Hodgson, and George Donald. As Thompson neared the end of his education, the Hudson's Bay Company asked for four more apprentices. Only two were eligible at that time ; one of them was the fourteen-year-old David Thompson. In May 1784, he set sail for Hudson's Bay aboard the Prince Rupert. He never saw his mother or England again. On December 23, 1788, about a mile from Manchester House, the eighteen-year-old Thompson fell down a bank and broke his leg. The break was serious, and the injury life-threatening. William Tomison, who ran Manchester House at that time, bound the leg, and a 24 hour vigil was kept for three weeks before it was deemed safe for Thompson to be alone at night. Thompson's condition remained grave. Four months after the accident, Tomison noted in his journal that he was afraid Thompson could die. On May 1, 1789 he wrote, David Thompson's leg he is afraid he will turn out to be a mortification as the joint of his ancle has never lowered of the swelling. | Hisham Al Masri

At the age of fourteen , he entered the Hudson bay's company. David thompson injured his leg and was forced to spend 2 years at Churchill. During this time , David thompson greatly expanded his mathematical and astronomical skills. He was being taught by Philip turnor who was a hudson bay's company surveyor. In 1797 , David Thompson was frustrated by the Hudson bay company's policies and he left to join the Northwest company. | In the 1800s ,David Thompson recieved an order by the Northwest company to establish a trading route to British columbia therefore he headed west to seek for a new trading route. When he reached the rocky mountains , the natives stopped him from going any further and he was forced to return. He was stuck in the snow for the rest of the winter. On the other hand , John Jacob Astor sent a ship around the America to establish a new trading post. | David
20 | 3/3/2010 8:43:28 | The fur trade all began when Jacques Cartier accidentally landed on the North America and claimed it's land for France. He continued his journey and stopped around the Graspe Peninsula, which is where he met the first nations people, and traded knives for their fur. Around the year 1600, beaver hats became popular, and fur trade in North America became very popular. But before the beaver popularity rose, Martin Frobisher sailed his first voyages, and Henry Hudson found the bay which he was named after, the Hudson's Bay. This all happened in 1576. Hudson's Bay Company, or HBC was formed on May 6th, 1670, a company which traded furs with natives. HBC continued to trade fur with out competition, up until 1783, which is when the North West Company was formed. In 1793 Alexander Mackenzie, he became the first person to reach the pacific ocean by crossing the Rocky Mountains. | Thomas Douglas, in 1811 bought 300 000 square kilometres of land for farming in Canada. He sent out a group of Scots to the area in 1811, but the group arrived too late for farming, so they had to hunt buffaloes until farming season. When the group started to farm next spring, the results were not what Douglas had expected, so he banned taking food out of the colony. the Nor'Westers became upset that they destroyed Fort Douglas (which the group of Scots resided in), and the Scots were forced off their land. The Scots fought the rebels later on, where all Scots were killed, and only one Indian killed. In 1821, the North West Company joined HBC, which then became the most power organization in the North America, because the company controlled most of then land in Modern Canada from the Atlantic to Pacific. | Tyler Jung
21 | 3/3/2010 9:45:02 | In Canada's early history 1650-1850, there were many daring explorers who charted Western Canada. Alexander Mackenzie charted much of British Columbia's rivers. There were many other great explorers but one of the most famous was David Thompson. He was a surveyer with the Hudson's Bay Company then eventually the Northwest Company. He eventually left for the Northwest Company because he wanted more adventure and he continued his work as a surveyer and fur trader. | The Northwest Company and the Hudson's Bay company were still enemies but eventually an important trading post for the North West Company was destroyed in the War of 1812 so they had no choice but to merge with the Hudson's Bay Company causing the destruction of the Northwest company. | Ambrose

23 | 3/3/2010 20:00:01 | David Thompson, sent to an orphanage at the age of 7 by his widowed mother. He spent half of his life there until he was hired to be a clerk for a new fur trade. In 1784 he begins his 7 year apprenticeship. He was only 1 of 46 people sent to establish trade in the foot hill of the Rockies. But before him were people looking for new fur trade as well. Nedar, and Pierre. 2 French fur traders from New France set their journeys sail off in 1650. The land to the west was unknown with many possibilities, their main plan was to travel to the great lakes in search of fur which was what they proposed to the government. The government didn't trust them so they sent 2 "watch dogs" to keep an eye out. They come back from their voyage explaining that they possibly found rich fur land, but they weren't trusted so both of them were jailed and fined. After these rejections from the New France government they decided to tell King Charles the 2nd of England, with the Kings consent monopoly of the rich fur land was taken and what started was the company known as the Hudson's Bay company. After the Hudson's Bay company has held this monopoly over rich fur land far too long New France takes over the trade routes in 1759 with a new company named the North West Company. There was a great competition between the two companies but in 15 years over 80% of the fur trade belonged to the North West Company. Now is when David Thompson comes in. Through all the land he has seen, all the posts he has claimed and created, all of his hard work had come to a halt in 1788 when he broke the large bone in his leg. The only thing he could do is be sent back home. Back home he was given the job of a surveyor by the assistant of the Hudson's Bay company. For 2 decades he has studied Astronomy and that was his job, people asked him if he could survey the stars then he should look down and survey the land. His job now was to record a Map, and study the geography of Canada. Alexander Mackenzie has passed through in search of the pacific. Whoever extends the trade to the pacific will be known as a Hero back home... but he never got there so it was now David Thompson's quest to find a passage that the Traders can use for years to come. | As David Thompson is on his way to find a new trade route, he is carefully observing and writing precise notes about the landscape, vegetation, and partners of the land. After 13 years with the Hudson's Bay company he has been told to stop surveying and focus on the fur trade. In 1747 he left the Hudson's Bay company to enter the Merchants of Canada who are the North West Company. This only benefit him because he was paid more money, and was also encouraged to keep making the map better. These years to come were to be the greatest years of exploring. He has accomplished his work in 10 months that would normally take him 2 years. In 1810 he has built trade posts deep into the mountains representing the North West Company. In September he has began to set sail with his crew to Columbia River, this only cause trouble as they entered Pigeon Indians land. They didn't want to start a fight so they climbed over a Mountain in the winter but couldn't get back down until spring. He has reached his destination and was creating "trading places" where posts were to be built along the river with Indians. At the very end of the River he find Fort Astoria now known as Oregon. In this year of 1810 there were about a good 100 posts around. David Thompson has worked for 3 decades in the North West. He has spent more time in his tent then he will ever in a house. He married a Crea women named, Charlotte Swau. They had 13 children together. In 1812 he retired and moved to Eastern Ontario in a house. His primary concern now was to finish his map and atlas of Canada. 50,000 miles of travel, and 2 years of dedication to complete... he finally completed his goal. Although David Thompson retired many people were just getting started, the gold brush attracted a lot of people who were willing to give it all or nothing to strike it rich. James Douglas was the first governor of Barker-ville which was the biggest settlement for gold. The town was named after Billy Barker who got rich in that particular spot which the town was built near. Some people found success, some wasted all their time, energy, and efforts to find nothing. The Frenzy of 8 years ended in 1866. | Damian Jaszczolt
