13th Annual ESOL Conference Call for Proposals

February 4-6, 2014 Kennesaw State University Presented by KSU, Bagwell College of Education Center for Education Placements & Partnerships and Georgia Department of Education, Title III and ESOL Call for Proposals Deadline for Submissions: November 1, 2013 Kennesaw State University's Center for Education Placements and Partnerships is soliciting proposals for the 2014 ESOL Conference "The Power of ESOL: Building a Better Future for ALL Students" to be held February 4 - 6, 2014, at the KSU Center. This is an opportunity to share effective models, practices, research, and information to provide your colleagues with insights that address the many needs of English learners. Please consider leading a session. Entry deadline is Friday, November 1, 2013. Due to administrative fees, presenters must pay a $49.00 half price registration fee for the conference. The Annual ESOL Conference is an interactive experience designed for educators serving students in grades K - 12. With over 1,000 participants last year and growing, this conference is a premiere event for developing greater knowledge and skill in working to strengthen achievement for English learners. Your presentation should fit into one or more of the following strands: Technology, Family Engagement, Collaboration, and Differentiation/Student Achievement. Please read the considerations and guidelines below to tailor your proposal to meet the requirements of the strand. The Annual ESOL Conference is one of Georgia’s largest educational events. We look forward to you sharing your proposal idea today! Proposal Considerations Please read the following descriptions for each presentation type before submitting your proposal. Make sure that your workshop meets the guidelines within each description. • Technology: Current and emerging technologies provide a means for students to have an authentic voice, an authentic audience, and authentic assessments. Technology tools facilitate shared teaching and learning, professional development, and opportunities to empower and engage students in curriculum design. Technology does not stand alone. Its power rests in the ability of school leadership to develop a vision and provide the necessary professional development and support to assure the full deployment of technology as a tool for curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Topics appropriate for this strand include: flipped classrooms, teaching creativity and innovation, teaching communication and collaboration, library and educational resources, virtual classrooms, student-directed learning, communities of practices and learning communities, social networking and collaboration tools, planning for technology, technology tools for the classroom • Family Engagement: Responsive schools encourage and facilitate family involvement and engagement and seek appropriate partnerships with businesses, social service agencies, and other organizations whose purposes are consistent with the school's mission and help strengthen school programs, family practices, and student learning and development for ALL students, including English learners. Topics appropriate for this strand include: school and community partnerships, school and family relationships, involvement, and programs, guidance, family support and social services, communicating with multi-generational households and with non-traditional family units, welcoming environment, parent liaisons, home visits, understanding cultural and language barriers, parent involvement • Collaboration: Collaboration is working together for a common purpose to achieve a benefit. As educators we must collaborate with colleagues inside and outside the school to increase student achievement. Topics appropriate for this strand include: motivation, reflection, engagement, access resources, expand opportunities, increase efficiency and effectiveness, communication, shared goals, networking, professional learning communities, advocacy, collaborative teaching • Differentiation/Student Achievement: Do you know your students? Do you give them multiple options for taking in information? Differentiating instruction involves observing and understanding the similarities and differences among students and using that information to plan instruction. Topics appropriate for this strand include: formative assessment, small group instruction, problem based learning, tiered assignments, diverse materials, effective feedback with ongoing assessments, strategic proactive curriculum planning, flexible grouping, anchor activities, learning centers/stations, learning styles, universal design for learning As you consider which presentation type to choose, also think about your audience. Will this topic be appropriate for General Education teachers, Middle/High teachers, Elementary teachers, administrators, District Leaders, novice teachers or experienced educators? Most importantly, think about your time. Sessions are 70 minutes in length this year. Make sure that you can present your topic clearly and succinctly in about 60 minutes. The additional 10 minutes should be used to answer questions from your audience and complete evaluations. Consider these questions when preparing your final proposal: 1. How well does the proposal relate to the conference theme and presentation types? 2. Does the proposal contain innovative and cutting-edge ideas that have achieved proven results? 3. Will the proposal's content attract and stimulate conference attendees' thinking? 4. Is the proposal clearly written, and does it specify what participants might gain from the session? 5. Are the ideas, practices, and programs replicable, and do they focus on the "whys" and "hows"? 6. Are the presentation techniques current and diverse? Guidelines for Proposals 1. Individuals may not submit or appear on more than two proposals. 2. Do not list individuals as secondary presenters unless you have a definite commitment that they will present. 3. Do not submit a proposal unless you can present your session any slot/time on your grade level day during the 13th Annual ESOL Conference. Sessions will be scheduled throughout the conference. 4. Conference registration fee for presenters will be $49.00. Presenters will receive a conference badge and lunch on the day(s) they present. 5. With the exception of general session, special feature, and distinguished lecture speakers, CEPP cannot pay an honorarium or expenses for anyone presenting at the Annual Conference. 6. Presenters may not use any conference presentations to market products or services; exhibit space is available for that purpose. 7. The standard audio/visual equipment provided for presenters includes LCD projectors, screens, flip charts, and computers with internet connection. Completing the ESOL Conference Proposal Application Form 1. Be sure that your session title clearly describes exactly what the session is about and is no more than 10 words. CEPP reserves the right to edit session titles. 2. Avoid abbreviations and acronyms that don't clearly explain the session's content. 3. Use active verbs to describe exactly what will occur in the session. Examples include words such as describe, discuss, role-play, and present. 4. Describe specific presentation techniques that you will be using—such as interactive, lecture, or multimedia—so that participants will know what kind of session they will be attending. 5. Presenters are responsible for their own handouts. Workshops generally average 35-40 attendees. Please prepare sufficient handouts for your session. 6. Describe what you will be doing in the session and what the participants can expect to leave with. 7. Write in complete sentences. Please do not use phrases. 8. Limit your description for the conference program to 75 words. CEPP reserves the right to edit session descriptions. 9. Presentations can be uploaded to the CEPP Web site after the conference. If you wish to share your presentation or any other materials, submit those PDF or PowerPoint documents via bcoecepp@kennesaw.edu by February 17, 2014. Submissions must be received no later than November 1, 2013. Selected presenters may be asked to present their session two times during the day.
